  1. I'm really into the podcasts here and others that I've found online and I really want to communicate these ideas to other people but I'm utterly terrible at doing so. It comes off confused, unclear, vague and pointless ... Are there any useful resources you can recommend? I've tried a few books but they are generally unhelpful.
  2. I would say argue with yourself ... usually when I'm debating people I've thought of most of the points that they are going to bring up beforehand and know the general rebuttals to their arguments. I'll be keeping an eye on this post though, hopefully some more good resources pop up.
  3. You will have to buy the domain names separately, this will cost you some money for each one. In regards to purchasing server space you will need to purchase a hosting plan that allows you to register multiple domains. The company I used to go with, Hostgator, allows for this on their "baby" plan: http://www.hostgator.com/shared, if you go to that link you'll notice the first thing it says in each of the boxes is "single domain" or "unlimited domains". The unlimited plan lets you have three domain names on one server. (I'm with Godaddy now for my hosting though because the service & software is better)
  4. And i've just noticed you said psychology not philosophy x] Some of what I just said still stands, especially the PhD thing, if you want to get a good psychology job you'll need a PhD and because everyone knows this there is a lot more competition.
  5. I've just finished my degree in computer science but I'm also into philosophy quite a bit, i enjoy reading about it on the side. To me it seems to be a simple case of if you need a well defined career at the end of it ... doing a STEM subject will give you much more job security, with philosophy its less clear what role you could go into. I'm pretty happy with the way I did it though ... studying something very technical in university and then studying philosophy on the side, you tend to get less bored with both of them if you're able to switch depending on what you're feeling like. Also if you're planning on taking it further ... i.e. PhD, there are less grants for philosophy researchers because you don't really produce anything tangible like a piece of software at the end of it.
  6. I have the opportunity to do a PhD in a STEM subject ... computer science but I'm not sure if it's worth doing. It's in the UK so it would only take 3 years, it's very unlikely to drag on like they seem to do in the US, it's also paid about $22,000 (tax free) per year. Is it worth doing if I really don't want to become a lecturer? I can't decide if spending 3 years doing it will be useful in the long run or not.
  7. There's a good course on coursera called "data scientist" which covers statistics and moves onto R programming (it gives you a real nice background in the theory you'll need for it) - if you've never used the site before they try get you to pay but all the content is free, you just have to find the link on the page
  8. Hmm I'm not too convinced about the empathy argument, it would heavily depend on them being seen, I'm sure there are plenty of them now but I don't see them much if ever. I'm sure some people would help but the DRO "child insurance" I hadn't considered, seems like a good idea though.
  9. I was talking to somebody about anarchism when they raised the point about how are children whose parents pass away looked after in an anarchist society? Thinking about it I can't really think of any profitable 'free market' way to handle this situation, I'm a bit of a newb at anarchism though. I was thinking that various charities / religions / willing foster parents could take them on but who would organise all of this and what would be the motive? - I don't think charities alone would cut it.
  10. Thanks for the recommendation - I'll check it out
  11. I'm looking for book recommendations to learn more about anarchism / religion / philosophy / politics / economy or pretty much any other topic that seems interesting. I've read a couple of books recommended in the podcasts which were pretty good and am looking for some more! Has anyone got any good book (or audiobook!) that they would recommend?
