  1. Recently I was reading this article about the myth of the skills gap https://www.technologyreview.com/s/608707/the-myth-of-the-skills-gap/. The problem right now is that the skills gap is just a shady excuse that the jobs actually don't exist no matter how much skill and education you have. I don't know if any of you have happened to go through a period of unemployment longer than a year but, it traps you in a very ugly and annoying cycle. The problem is that Stefan addressed for most of us young people it's not a failure to launch that is our fault but, it's no where to land that we have no control over. It disgusts me that our stupid education system doesn't even help with the basics of life skills and practical skills we need to succeed in the world and gets away with teaching a bunch of random bullshit that's only going to be important on some trivia game show. My question to Libertarians is that if you guys actually believe unemployed people who are actually diligently searching for jobs and who are not in a good position because of circumstances that happened by birth should be left to starve? I think that's the one biggest problem with this free market concept is that we forget that some people's default setting are not their fault. It's also the most evil disgusting thing that happens when people put so much time and effort investing in themselves by getting more education and learning a skill but, not given some kind of guide to how they should navigate getting employment. Anyway I live in a blue state and this crap is happening to me. I think when it comes to issues like helping the unemployed for the people who are actually being diligent and working to improve themselves but, getting nothing in return all sides of the Political party are tone deaf and ignorant including libertarians.
  2. [Cross-post from the FB group] What do you guys do for a living? Any of you not satisfied with what you're doing, or want to be doing something that more directly moves the world toward peace and rationality? I've had a pretty good year financially, and I'm looking to reinvest in projects that make the world more awesome. And I'd obviously prefer to work with / employ / empower philosophically-minded friends, if possible. I have a ton of project ideas already, and am open to hearing your ideas too. Almost any skill can be useful, but I'm immediately looking for people with programming, Photoshop, social media, research, and writing skills. The main "qualifications" are reliability, good communication, and commitment, so don't be scared off if you don't think you have any hard skills. Since you're here, I'm guessing you're smarter than the average bear, and you could learn what you need if you're motivated enough. So seriously, let's talk and figure out if we can work together. You can comment here, or feel free to reach out to me privately. --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- At the moment, my most pressing need is for an experienced C++ developer. See my job posting on Indeed, and please forward it to anyone you know who seems qualified (and is located in the right area). We're building charting software for independent stock traders; very competitive salary and benefits available. But as I said, there are a lot of other projects that we could collaborate on. Feel free to *propose* a project, as well. And the more we work together, the faster we can make the world better. So even if you aren't a developer, let's chat!
  3. Hello everyone! It's been a long time since Ive posted anything on the forums but I think that you guys can help give some thoughts on a situation im in. I'm in the last stages of trying to move out of an abusive household. The past year (since I graduated high school) I have spent doing lots of self work and therapy and also gaining some work experience (mostly in retail). Ive already decided not to go to college and my goal is to start making enough money to move out so I can try to heal from the years of abuse Ive suffered and also start focusing on my other goals in life. So basically my question is does anyone know of some jobs that ,with my limited experience, could pay more than just minimum wage? I'm totally open to all suggestions so please feel free to share anything. I'm not sure what else to add other than i do also have experience as a private music teacher (for guitar) although i don't find it very rewarding at all to be totally honest (songwriting is my passion not teaching). Its nearly impossible to be creative while in the house with an abusive person so I really just need something to do now to get on my feet so I can then start totally focusing on my passion. Thanks for reading, I look forward to your responses!

  5. I would like to give back to the FDR community by sharing my experience and research in locating, applying, interviewing and excelling in the workforce. Everything from corporate, to small/medium businesses, information companies, to the service industry, telecom, hidden organic co-ops in Washington DC, and even gardening and fundraising where the possibilities are endless. Yes the economy is a disaster, but there is still money to be made, skills to learn, networks to leverage and life to be lived. Let's break out of our mental chains, get focused and productive and prepare the freethinkers and peaceful parents for this economy! "Maximize your mobility between sectors, skills and ways of earning income, Trust the network, not the corporation or the state." (see article below) I will be posting in the bronze, silver and gold sections so if you have not already please donate to see more posts! freedomainradio.com/donate or pop over the post office and mail in a money order. Please comment or post your questions below. To start my posts on this topic I would like to share a section from some excellent articles re-posted to maxkeiser.com by Charles Hugh Smith about an emerging group referred to as Mobile Creatives: " Mobile Creatives. This is an emerging class that ranges across many income classifications and thus cannot be described by income alone. Some earn Upper Caste incomes, others are Working Poor. This class is self-employed, free-lance, entrepreneurial, sole proprietors with adaptive skills. They may collaborate with other Creatives rather than have employees, and may have part-time jobs. There are roughly 5.5 million incorporated self-employed people in the U.S.; these tend to be professionals such as attorneys, engineers and physicians. These self-employed are generally members of the Upper Caste. The Mobile Creatives (which include small farmers, craftspeople, independent programmers, etc.) number around 10 million, or 8% of the workforce. I use the word mobile here not to suggest mobility between physical places (though that is one factor in this class’s flexibility) but mobility between sectors, skills and ways of earning income. Members of this class might take a short-term paying gig if the pay and circumstance is attractive, and then return to self-employment. They tend to foster multiple income streams and in general operate by the principle trust the network, not the corporation or the state. Some members of this class joined the cohort involuntarily, as the result of layoffs; others pursue this livelihood for its freedom, flexibility (important to parents of young children or those caring for elderly parents) and potential for self-expression. This is the “wild card” class that falls outside all conventional class/income hierarchies. It includes those seeking outlier wealth and those who have chosen voluntary poverty as a means to an independent life that they “own” lock, stock and barrel. Though this class wields little conventional financial or political power, it has a potentially large leadership role in social and technical innovations. This is the 4% Pareto Distribution that can exert outsized influence on the 64%. The other eight classes are hidebound by conventions, neofeudal and neocolonial arrangements and a variety of perverse incentives, false choices and illusions of choice, including democracy itself. 6. Hi, I'm James and I'm in high school. I've been thinking about what I want to do as a job for quite a while now, and I felt really stupid for not thinking of posting this question sooner. I'm very interested in medicine as a whole but mostly psychology. I'm also interested in politics and making change. I really want to find a way to incorporate the majority of my interests in a career that I will enjoy (as well as profit from). I'm well aware of the impeding economic collapse based on the statistics that I've looked into. I would really appreciate any feedback regarding this. Thanks. (Also, if this is the wrong place for this topic then please let me know.)
  7. Hello, I recently started a cryptography company. We can't talk about the details right now, but we are looking for a very talented and versatile artist who can draw everything from icons to logos to mascots. The job will require someone who has a very unique and distinct art style. We want all of our logos to be timeless, not trendy. This isn't a one time gig, but rather a very long term job (5+ years). All skill levels welcome. Payment to be discussed individually. --- Mail: [email protected]
  8. Hello everyone, I am curious on anyone's thoughts on pursuing becoming an engineer, and more specifically an electrical engineer. Does anyone have any knowledge / experience, etc. on the different kinds of engineering, different skill sets for each, and so on. Also, on my last year of high school and is it worth it to pay to go to university / college? Another thought was to become an electrician. I am very interested in engineering though (though I have yet to take the courses in physics, gr 12 math -- I am in a semester school). All thoughts, criticisms, etc. are beyond appreciated ! Thanks
