  1. If: Two people aggreeing to trade = evil. Then: Two people having sex is rape. 1 = 2 Up = down Right = left TRUTH doesn't exist....... Getting Peter Joseph to parse EXACTLY where things become immoral would show the insanity of his position.
  2. Man. Think about how much time and energy and resources this could save humanity. Imagine being able to work from home, shop from home, socialize etc... We could cut down on traffic, gas, travel time, etc... Yay! Why can't people see that trade is what FIXES things in the world.
  3. Any guy that marries this lady is in for a world of pain, arguments, games, manipulation and...yes, hypocrisy.
  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5oe63pOhLI I thought that THIS explanation of the internet was great. In the upcoming documentary I think we could show how the success of the internet is directly analogous to the success of anarchism. 1) Networks only work when everybody agrees to a universal code. Analogous to UPB 2) Everyone involved benefits because they are doing so voluntarily. Analogous to the Market 3) It's core strength is that it's decentralized. Analogous to the concept of Anarchism. I think some people who would normally be emotionally skeptical of anarchism could accept it based on the fact that the GREATEST IMPROVEMENT IN HUMAN PRODUCTIVITY IS BASED ON ANARCHISTIC CONCEPTS. Might be a selling point! Btw, how's the documentary coming?!?!?!?!? Can't wait. Gonna poop.
  5. Man, I see this ALL THE TIME in music and songwriting. Usually when I see someone with a HUGE number of guitar pedals and an obsession with equipment, they aren't a good writer. I interpret this behavior as avoidance of what they really need to do. The big spender gets the FEELING of making big progress, without confronting the behavior that prevents them from achieving their goals of actually writing good music, or actually getting in good shape. Personally I LOVE being the contrarian popping the bubbles of the fancy-food, fancy-phone, fancy-beer, fancy-car....people. I will purposely order normal food and normal drinks just to see the fancy people squirm. When the discussions of taste come to fruition, and these people have to explain how a 10 dollar a glass whiskey is better.... I get to see an emperor without clothes. Being the curious/clueless person is dangerous to the pompous.
  6. "This sort of emotional written outburst can't possibly be coming from an individual that has made a considerable effort in the direction of self-knowledge" Are you sure about that? It seems to have had the intended consequence. What would have been a better obituary for this woman?
  7. I have a big life decision to make and I'm looking for advice from anyone who has worked in a big tech place.I've passed the (many) interviews phase and I have the choice to take or not take this particular position. The position is: Ass-is-tant Pr-ogr-am Man-ager This company is the #1 job-related website/search engine in the world. I would be managing a small team of web developers to help roll-out web products out on schedule. I would think of new ways to make them more productive and happy. If I did well, they would give me more teams. People at the company said that the key is to strike the very difficult balance between motivation and annoyance. Hmmm. That is the kicker. Do I want to be the guy who is always on the verge of being hated? Notes: 1) I have many years of experience leading small teams at my old job. 2) Personally, I'm not interested in 'leadership' per se, I just do it when I must. (I'm an INTP) 3) I lack direct experience with web development. The company knows this and still wants me. 4) The pay is rather low: 40ish. And I have offers at other places (non tech) so I'm not desperate. The question I have is this: Is this a thankless and respectless job? In your experience, will I be constantly stressed out and feeling like I can't keep up? Or is this something that one can 'master'? I want a job that I can eventually be competent, respected and masterful and not bring home my worries. This position is amorphous and open-ended which is interesting but also slightly worrying. If you've worked at a tech place and know team management, please please let me know what you think about positions like this! Thanks!
  8. Thank you, if your admiration is real. Though I suspect you are trolling and being passive agressive. Anyway, I happen to find your deist position not admirable. i tried very hard to be an atheist. (try? Is it like picking up a rock? Do you think atheists just WILL themselves into the idea?) to belive that the unvierse is competely uncontroled by a higher power (as opposed to what? I see no controller, and you're invoking an unnessesary and self-contradictory element) that everything in my life can be explianed logically and rationally,(as opposed to what? Should things be explained without reference to reason? And by what means would you ARGUE FOR that position?) that the world always makes sense if you have the right principles (as opposed to what? If the universe DIDN'T make sense, how would you even know?) that moral code can be derived solely though intution and philosphy ( as opposed to what? tea leaves? chicken entrails? )
  9. I don't follow. Are you saying that the only thing keeping governments today from attacking every other country is the fact that those countries have a centralized state? I'm pretty sure there are tons of countries that couldn't effectively fight back an invasion, or stop an attack.
  10. Optimal "risk assessment" is a hallmark of a totally free society. If anything the free society would have the best defences against such mauraders. And even if it wasn't, it still wouldn't justify a state, since giving a group of people violent power over you is the OPPOSITE of safety.
  11. Thank you all for the kind words! Even just one good comment makes it all worth it. The whole thing was recorded in my kitchen (even the drums are an electronic set!). The lyrics and melodies took about 2 years to develop. MAN was it hard work. But glad to see it come to fruition.
  12. Make sure to start on song 1, "Once Upon a Time" :-) Not #3 "Human Cannonball"
  13. In this day an age it feels weird to put out an album. There's enough music right? BUT that creative urge is always there. I must admit, I'm proud of this. http://rainbowdangerclub.bandcamp.com/ It's a concept album about two brothers. One flies away to the stars.... to escape the sadness on Earth.
  14. This is a deep question. Inho, a person could FEEL they are opposed to rape without being an anarchist. But that person would be being inconsistent. The state they support violates bodies at will. It would be like a doctor in 1700 being "against disease" but who does not wash his hands. He FEELS he is against disease, but he doesn't know that he's a (small) part of the cause of disease.
  15. The people in the government don't own all of this property.
  16. Hi Squatch, Let's get in contact. I'll be moving to Austin on the 4th of July. I have friends in San Antonio and I'll be there every so often. Also, I'm sure you'll be up in Austin now and then.
  17. Some thoughts: 1) Aesthetics invites endless debate because there is no objective standard to prove any point. 2) Important things are scary to debate because they implies moral blame. Easier to stick with sports/music/film/actors etc.
  18. So sad. It's gotta be tough being the son of a cult leader. Maybe this is a coincodence, but the only person in my life who has killed himself was....a pastor's son.
  19. Hi Matt, Thanks for coming onboard. Your post was heartbreaking. I hope you are finding some stability in your life these days. I know what it's like to have an massively alcoholic father. Also I remember feeling invisible during childhood. That started to change for me as well around the age of 14 when my father started paying attention to me because of my music. I grew up in South Dakota, so I also can empathise with the strange feeling of desolation and emptyness that pervades the northern midwest. That's probably part of the reason I left the country.
  20. Simon, Yes. Anarchists are the people who have a rational position on the question of property. All other philosophies would refer to "utility". And at SOME point utilitarily speaking - - a mans pleasure from raping would be greater than the womans pain. Thus, they'd have to defend it.
  21. Hi Hterag, If you ever come to Shanghai, send me an sms. I'll put you up and show you the sights. (This offer is good until July 2013 when I leave for good) There's even a rationalist FDR friendly group here.
  22. To the OP. Is there a contradiction at the heart of the argument? By contradiction I mean...using the language "one ought to do X", to disprove the concept that "one ought to do X". Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'd be interested in hearing what you think.
  23. But in a free society how will children be educated?
  24. I like the title "Or sumpin" Yes, "Or Sumpin" is an evocative phrase. Powerful. Not to be used lightly! Perhaps the documentary could be called "On Truth", like his book. Or "Unchaining the Truth", or "The Truth Unchained" It'd be more descriptive. Eh, whateves. Truth aint bad tho. Stef almost always is 3 (or 10) steps ahead of me...and usually when I find myself disagreeing....later I realize he was freekin right all along and I was wrong. I'm used to it by now.
