Do I owe you my services if you're drowning?
Alan C. replied to DCLugi's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
He doesn't owe his services, but he would likely receive condemnation, scorn, and possibly ostracism for doing nothing. Obviously it depends upon circumstances. If the child fell through ice or was being washed away in rapids then the risk might be too great to jump in after him. -
If you intend to sever contact, it should be to protect yourself from further abuse rather than as a parting shot to wreak vengeance or to teach somebody a lesson. I recommend that you get your affairs in order in such a way that your family cannot track you down. They may attempt to contact you through people you know.

Who will build the roads...
Alan C. replied to Existing Alternatives's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
An amusing aspect of that video is that it shows the stark contrast of a society without capital accumulation. They literally built a road with their hands which took 20+ years (the time it took for infants to become grown adults). A capitalist, with excavating equipment, could've carved out that road in matter of weeks, and those people could've enjoyed the benefits for all of those years. The harm done by a lack of capital accumulation is on display for everyone to see. -
Gizmodo columnist advocates mandatory voting

Voting is a bad idea, let alone mandatory voting. People can't even take care of themselves, so how can they possibly be qualified to decide how others should live? If you think voting is a good idea then search for the following terms on YouTube: people of walmart americans are stupid mark dice

Prevalence of Low Testosterone in Men
Alan C. replied to aaaaa11's topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
This isn't something that I gave much consideration to until relatively recently. I'm in my early forties and working out at the gym is noticably more difficult than it was a decade ago. It might be a good idea for me to get my testosterone levels checked. I did a quick search for ways to boost testosterone naturally. Among the ones that got my attention were vitamin D and zinc. I take vitamin D supplements because I don't get much sun, and was suprised to learn that many foods that I eat regularly are good sources of zinc (chicken, spinach, flax seeds, salmon, dark chocolate, brown rice, cashews). Among the lifestyle suggestions I read included exercise, sufficient sleep, and reduction of sugar. I could definitely use more sleep. Many articles said to take whey protein because it's a good source of branch chain amino acids which boosts testosterone. However, some of those articles read like ads, so I'm not sure how valid the science is. I happen to take whey protein anyway because I can't eat any more chicken, fish, and egg whites than I already do. -
Happiness in Socialist Countries
Alan C. replied to D-Rex Naptime's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
There is no way to quantify happiness in any meaningful way. People will say that they're happy just to save face. Rising GDP does not indicate human flourishing. GDP can go up while people become increasingly impoverished and go down while people become increasingly prosperous. -
My response wasn't intended to assuage your concerns; it was to correct something you said. In the vast majority of cases of fossil discovery, there is no trace of the organism. Circumstances have to be right for a fossil to form. If you're looking for transitional fossils like cells in a movie reel then you're not going to find them.
-
There isn't a shortage of transitional fossils. Every organism is a potential transition. Check YouTube for many videos covering this subject. It doesn't follow that there shouldn't be a shortage because fossilization isn't commonplace.

Anarcho-communists (holy shit...)
Alan C. replied to DSEngere's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
It depends upon the type of camping you're talking about. I went camping when I was a kid, but we brought a tent, food, sleeping bags, and supplies with us in a car. If you're talking about roughing it like Survivorman or Man vs Wild then that's a bit more difficult, but even those guys bring a few items with them that can't be easily procured in the wild. -

The amusing irony is that Burning Man is made possible by the capitalistic order of production. -
Anarcho-communists (holy shit...)
Alan C. replied to DSEngere's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
The caller is woefully misinformed about some things. Everything requires resources because the procurement and provision of things requires consumption. People have to eat and time is not unlimited. Money IS a resource; otherwise it's not money. I realize that's a prescriptive statement, but real money arises on the market. It's a representation, and direct result of, production. Paper tickets issued by the State aren't money. He said that everything costs something because of money. No, everything costs something because of scarcity. Moneyless communities can exist, but their standard of living will be very primitive. Money prices allow division of labor to extend across large groups of people. Look around your home at the modern conveniences available to you. You probably have access to appliances (refrigerator, washer/dryer, microwave, stove/oven), computer, Internet, TV, mobile phone and electronics, entertainment devices, personal appliances (fan, electric shaver, blow dryer), personal care products (soap, toothpaste, deodorant), prescription lenses, transportation, etc. Price signals coordinate the allocation of resources, and the division of labor of millions of people, to make these things possible. Having "coordinators" running around, asking people what they need, or calling in orders to some central planner, is extremely inefficient. -
