  1. I wrote a post a while back about credit by examination, which allows you to earn credit by taking a test. Almost all schools allow about 2 years of transfer credit, which can be exams. This will save you thousands of dollars and lessen the pain of going to school. https://board.freedomainradio.com/topic/31799-testing-out-of-college/ Also look into Harvard Exension School, the classes are mostly online, so you can aviod other people http://www.extension.harvard.edu/
  2. I don't have faith in other nations; its just, in general, the other governments are weaker and don't have the ability to do evil on a global scale. How many countries can drone bomb the other side of the world, or contribute billions of dollars to prop up corrupt regimes?
  3. I haven’t had a chance to read up on this in depth; but I believe this is a good thing, because the USA will fall way behind other countries in Bitcoin use and innovation. The last thing I want is the corrupt evil empire that is the USA being propped up by Bitcoin. I feel the real action will be in emerging markets with strong grey/black market activity.
  4. I don't think you can live on minimum wage anywhere in US. Try getting a job working on Bakken oil field. I heard even Walmart employees make $17 an hour in that area due to labor shortages. http://www.bakkenoilcareers.com/
  5. 1. He hasn’t proved that the government is an effective solution; this is just assumed in his argument. Generally government is horribly inefficient and ineffective. 2. Charitable organizations could fund this sort of thing; most people have a soft spot for children, not a hard sell. 3. Which is worse, a few hundred exploited children or a million dead in the Iraq war? If you look at all the negative consequences of government and compare that to the positive good that is done there is a huge imbalance on the negative side. 4. He is using an emotionally charged issue to cloud people’s judgment, pure sophistry. 5. If prostitution was legal, there would be less demand.
  6. Bitcoin isn’t widely accepted, so people need to convert from fiat to BTC and vice versa. This creates a need for the exchanges which are a choke point where governments can get its tentacles in. When Bitcoin is more widely adopted people won’t need to use exchanges or any third parties and can just transact in BTC. I think it is just a matter of time. Try to search out individuals and businesses that transact in Bitcoin, and don’t do business with any US based firms.
  7. What is more likely, they are wrong on most things but right about Bitcoin, or wrong on Bitcoin as well.
  8. Argentinian Central Bank Warns of Digital Currency Riskshttp://newsbtc.com/2014/05/29/argentinian-central-bank-warns-digital-currency-risks/Despite what seems to be a promising bitcoin ecosystem developing in South American, the Argentinian Central Bank has gone ahead and issued a warning on the perils of getting involved with digital currencies — the biggest of which being bitcoin. The warning makes reference to issues that have long been discussed by central banks. Digital currency is most certainly not backed by any central authority (by design), and as such, aren’t considered to be legal tender.Despite that, merchants are still finding themselves tremendously interested in the promise that bitcoin holds. No excessive fees that chomp into revenue, and no opportunity for a middle man to screw things up.And what would a digital currency warning be if the threat of criminal activity wasn’t mentioned? The Central Bank discusses the possibility of using digital currency to possibly finance crime and its use to facilitate money laundering, because you know, this can’t be done with traditional currency in its physical form. The warning goes on to mention the history of volatility when it comes to digital currencies, which is rather ironic considering the Argentinian peso is volatile itself.Inflation of the national currency by some estimates have reached one hundred percent, which has started making bitcoin an attractive solution for many citizens in the country. At the end of the day, however, it is the central bank’s duty to protect the national currency.
  9. Hidden cameras recording the stark differences in how people nearby respond to the physical violence happening right in front of them.
  10. I was a front end developer and am now studying for a masters in IT. Right now the web development world is in a bubble. There is a ton of venture capital (VC) money funding every hair brained idea for a start up. Historically the programming industry has been subject to many booms and busts. That being said, I feel talented programmers can always find work. High intelligence is required to be a good developer, but if you’re here you are probably pretty sharp. There is an incredible amount of things you need to learn, and you will need to always keep up with new tech. The field is also very demanding in terms of working hours, and you will spend the whole day actually doing work, not like other fields.Go to Lynda.com, for $30 a month you can watch video lessons on 100s of programming, design and related classes. There are a few other similar sites. Start with Web Design Fundamentals http://www.lynda.com/Web-Web-Design-tutorials/Web-Design-Fundamentals/150166-2.htmlThe only thing you can do with a history degree is teach, so whatever you do drop that lame BS.
  11. Sorry, that you dad is an asshole. Try to avoid him as much as possible and don’t do anything to provoke confrontations. Try to find a charity that has a lawyer you can speak to about your options. Make sure you don’t have any drugs in house and make sure there is nothing illegal that can be used against you if your dad calls police. Probably the best thing you can do is start saving money. Money = freedom. Do you have a job? Are you good with computers? Are you still in school? What are the laws regarding work at your age?
  12. Cody Wilson has a great line about how he is developing Dark Wallet to challenge the government to expand its control to every computer on the internet and then it will collapse under its own weight. "Legal encapsulation is not effectively possible," declares Cody Wilson of Defense Distributed, makers of the world's first gun made via 3D printing technology. "So it's fun to kind of challenge the state to greater and greater levels of its own hyper-statism."
  13. Reason # 1001 to leave USA. It's like their not even trying to pretend we have freedom anymore.
  14. I haven’t read it, but it sounds ridiculous. When it says the economy grows at 2-3% I think they are talking about GDP which is a BS government statistic. So, I wouldn’t take any conclusions seriously.
  15. I was in National Guard about 10 years ago. I would recommend NOT telling your chain of command that you want to renounce your service. I don’t think becoming a martyr is a good idea. If you just stop showing up most likely nothing will happen, however if you challenge the militaries authority and legitimacy they will squash you like a bug. I found a website that seems to have good info:http://girightshotline.org/en/military-knowledge-base/topic/absences-from-the-reserves
  16. If you haven’t met her, I see three possibilities 1) he is embarrassed by her, 2) he is embarrassed by you, 3) she is very controlling and won’t let him invite you. You should invite them out as a couple.
  17. Also, noteworthy that she didn’t have courage to say it outright but instead went with “look into my eyes”.
  18. @st434u what do you use for investment/savings? Setting aside the intrinsic value argument, Bitcoin still seems like best option. The only other thing I can think of is gold and silver. But, governments may confiscate gold from banks and it would be hard crossing a border with gold on you.
  19. Every time a Bitcoin is mined a statist dies!
  20. I think a free market solution would be to sell wireless routers (layer 2 switches) that also self organize to create an internet backbone (layer 3 TCP IP). Most people already own wireless routers and are paying for electricity to run them, so why not have those devices replace ISP's. I'm still working out the details of this idea.
  21. Watch Richard Ambrose and Jonny Phillips quickly construct a building made of concrete canvas—a material that has all the elements of concrete, but is flexible enough to be turned into any shape. This technology allows people to erect permanent structures in a fraction of the time needed for traditional building techniques.
  22. The government backed down, at least for now. I think this is the first time the US gov has ever backed down in a situation like this. “Based on information about conditions on the ground, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of the public,” BLM director Neil Kornze said.
  23. ROBOT ZONDA | Lengüitahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vche1qtnIxwThe band has free downloads of all their songshttp://www.robotzonda.com.ar/
  24. You can go from local currency to Bitcoin and then send overseas via Bitcoin and back to local currency. It's a new system so still not universal and easy but it will improve. The reason why you would do this is less fees and country restrictions. I would go off something like Maslow's hierarchy of needs, although I don't 100% agree with Maslow. So, basic needs would be food and shelter and things that keep you alive as compared to nice to have things like a TV. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs Industrial use of gold is a very recent development. What about the other centuries of human history when people valued gold? What practical purpose did it serve? Why was it so valuable back then? According to the supply and demand theory: “If demand increases (demand curve shifts to the right) and supply remains unchanged, a shortage occurs, leading to a higher equilibrium price.”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supply_and_demand So, scarcity can cause higher prices.
  25. A global payment infrastructure provides a service that people value. This by itself creates value. Western Union and Visa have stock prices partially based on the value of the service they provide. Language is a great example of network effects. The more people who speak a language, the more useful it is; an increase in number of English speakers only adds value to the language. Most people, who choose to learn English as a second language, do so because of its world wide use in business. In the same way, when you are choosing a currency, a global currency would be more attractive than a regional currency (all other things being equal). And if more people choose Bitcoin the price will rise. People wear gold because it makes them feel attractive, important, wealthy, and to impress others. Jewelry does not fulfill any basic human needs. The value of gold arises more from its scarcity and its usefulness as a medium of exchange. I didn't say the US dollar being the global reserve currency is a good thing, but the resulting increse in demand does add to its market value.
