31 y/o guy looking for girl :) My revised OKCupid profile
Magenta replied to KyleK's topic in Meet 'n Greet!
I only read the OP but here's my advice: don't waste your time on free dating sites. They're filled with "free" kind of people. Very low signal to noise ratio. If you value the online matching process, pay for it. This also filters out all the "free" people so you only find others who value the online matching process. In computer programming terms, it's a "proof of work". An obstacle that must be overcome before entering the club. Match.com seems to be where the most serious people go. -

Where can I find unschooling communities and sunlight?
Magenta replied to Patrik D's topic in Peaceful Parenting
Texas! Lots of sunshine, low cost of living, conservative leanings, always summer, rarely freezes, closer to equator so even amounts of sunshine, booming economy. Dallas, Houston, and Austin are the 3 largest cities. I live in Houston and plan to settle down in Austin. I chose Texas over anywhere in the world. First for me is therapy, then I'm thinking of dating, having children, and homeschooling in Austin. Most conservative states in the US have homeschooling communities, I saw some when I lived in Missouri as well.- 6 replies

Purchasing government bonds, I could see as ethically questionable, since you're buying a contract to steal money from others, including the unborn. But shorting bonds and going long or short on any stock I don't see as an issue. In the case of shorting Greek anything, I'd think you're doing people a favor by helping the market indicators show the inevitable, and the sooner it happens the better the future.

Maybe because Sriracha company is one of few to not claim trademark, shrugging statist convention. "David Tran, who operates his family-owned Huy Fong Foods out of a 650,000-square-foot facility in Irwindale, doesn't see his failure to secure a trademark for his Sriracha sauce as a missed opportunity. He says it's free advertising for a company that's never had a marketing budget ... 'Everyone wants to jump in now,' said Tran, 70. 'We have lawyers come and say 'I can represent you and sue' and I say 'No. Let them do it.'' ... Tran is so proud of the condiment's popularity that he maintains a daily ritual of searching the Internet for the latest Sriracha spinoff. He believes all the exposure will lead more consumers to taste the original spicy, sweet concoction" He's not full-blooded anarchist, though. "That's why Tran has gone after knockoffs of Huy Fong's Sriracha from China. Unlike the name, Tran trademarked his rooster logo and distinctive bottle." http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-sriracha-trademark-20150211-story.html#page=1

Even better! I just started a 30-day free trial of Google Music All-Access (will be 10 $/mo) and it allows the native YouTube app to play just the audio portion of a video while you use other apps on your phone, or you can turn off the screen entirely. In addition, it removes all ads from YouTube - phone and desktop. I just listened to this video on my Galaxy S4 without the screen on:
-
You can also use "Viral", which is a YouTube player that allows you to turn off the screen without pausing the audio. It also offers viewing of videos in a floating window so that you can use other apps while you're watching the video, or you can just full-screen the other apps with just the audio in the background. It is buggy sometimes. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Mata.YTplayer&hl=en

Common suggestion is no more than 1/3 of gross income should go towards rent. Have you looked into a cheaper place that is further from the city center? It would have an annoying commute, but would allow you to save money. I hate commuting, but I would do it temporarily if I was tight on funds. Is there another city within a few hours' drive (so that interviews are easy) where you could get a similar job but pay less in rent?

Fla. boy’s circumcision spurs lengthy legal battle, protests
Magenta replied to iHuman's topic in Current Events
TL;DR: had a six-month relationship that resulted in a pregnancy sued to prove his paternity and to get partial custody of the boy and the couple whittled out a parenting plan outlining everything from his surname to his legal address, to ... what becomes of his penis. In that document, the circumcision of the child was agreed to by both parents. When it came time to schedule the procedure, though, the mother resisted, having researched the subject further. A 2013 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found 58.3 percent of newborn boys were circumcised in 2010, down from 64.5 percent in 1979. (The data excluded babies who were circumcised after leaving the hospital - many Jewish boys have the procedure during a ceremony called a bris, eight days after birth.) -
PatrickC, I'm debating between a bumper sticker and a larger vinyl sticker. The larger vinyl is easier to see and gets more attention, but it sometimes makes people not think it's not genuine (they think it's paid advertisement). What are your thoughts on that?
-
Thanks Carl, I was trying to match it. I'd still have the vinyl you sent me on my rear window, but I removed it when attempting to sell my car. Comments I got from coworkers both when I had my Ron Paul vinyl (no longer a supporter) and when I had the FDR vinyl were: "you must be getting paid to have that big advertisement on the back of your car". I like the biggest advertisement possible because it gets the message out, people probably don't read measly bumper stickers, but I wonder if people don't take the message to heart if they think its paid advertisement. What do you guys think?
-
I intentionally split "Freedomain" into "Free Domain" because previous stickers on my car had multiple people ask me, "what is that fr ... fren .. I don't remember, that radio sticker, what is that?" Font is "Lucida Bright". Let me know your thoughts before I order some for my car.

If you want data, this T-Mobile plan is only 30 $/mo and if you go over on minutes, you'll only add a few dollars to your bill @ .10 $/minute. I use this plan. http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-plans If you want little to no data, you have lots of options from the MVNOs like Tracfone, Virgin Mobile, Boost, Cricket, Straight Talk, Ting, and more.

Military automation - drones, cars, swimmers, walkers
Magenta posted a topic in Science & Technology
One of the reasons the government is so successful at collecting taxes is the slave-on-slave enforcement - without it, going door-to-door to extract funds becomes too expensive to be profitable. But with technology reducing the cost of machines and those machines becoming autonomous, door-to-door enforcement becomes feasible. Yikes. -

I have not heard this argument before, would you mind sharing the ideas or a link for further reading?

Reddit controversy over Ron Paul got me reading about Ron, woke me up partially. I knowingly put aside further research temporarily to help the 2012 presidential campaign. Worked my ass off as county leader and supporting division leader and state leader. Drove to Iowa with the official campaign to help caucus. Once my county was won, I had more free time and began researching further. Listened to lots of audio content on Mises.org when I came across Jeffrey Tucker's audiobook "It's a Jetsons World", narrated by Stef. Thought to myself, "this narrator is the best I've ever heard. I must listen to more from him". Googled him and found that not only does he narrate audiobooks, he has his own content - YAY! Read further ... he's controversial in the Ron Paul group for being critical of Ron Paul ... it would be good to expose myself to a different perspective, especially from a guy who has some credibility as a Mises.org narrator and libertarian thinker. Most shocking thing to happen in my life. Listened first to all of the episodes that had "Ron Paul" in the description, which blew my mind, then I started at podcast 1 and went forward.

I've been a premium subscriber to LastPass for about 3 years now and it's treated me great on both my work PC, home PC, and smartphone. Having an offline password manager is inherently more secure, but significantly less convenient, so I use LastPass and I haven't heard of any security breaches.

I was bicycle touring this weekend and there was a water line break in a neighborhood I was passing through. Early Saturday morning and a river of mud was going down this hill and two guys are knee-deep in it, bent over digging and turning wrenches to fix the problem. Good luck finding a woman to do that.
