What if 10,000 people want 2,000 phones?
wdiaz03 replied to Alan C.'s topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
and the answer would be 42. -
It seems your argument revolves around pain. to clarify: Is it OK to eat animals that are already dead? killed by other animals. Is it OK to heavily sedate animals before killing them? They would feel no pain. Is it OK to genetically engineer animals that have no pain receptors and feel no pain when killed?

Will never work...30 yards is not enough distance. And why stop with guns? lets not forget that planes where brought down with box cutters. I say triple the distance and include sharp objects down to nail files and liquids of more than 3.4oz. Why should air travelers have more protection than government officials? not fair.

Care to elavorate? If I approach a unicorn believer and ask him if unicorns can see in the dark and he says yes..then I Laught and point to their Holly book and say "HA HA! see it says here that the cannot..." then he can say..."oh...ok...good then thanks" or "well that's not the holly book we believe in..bla bla". Where the fun in that? why do you feel it is fun to engage irrational people in this manner? -
How to best teach the benefits of low time preference to children
wdiaz03 replied to wdiaz03's topic in Peaceful Parenting
Thanks for the reply. I'll have to admit ...1982 that i'm not at all confortable with that approach, I see children no different than adults that do not have all the information to make good desicions. Why would I step back and not provide the missiong information? Seems irresponsable and cruel. If the child is eating junk food why not inform them of the consecounces this will have? I only expect him to make his own desicions but at least to have more of the information he might not be taking into account. He has expressed interest in video games and he enjoys building small video games. When I introduced him to scratch he was really excited about programing with it http://scratch.mit.edu/ and built his own version of a favority game the first day. I try to take him out of the house for things like biking, and other sports and he goes after some negotiation but he is never proactive or excited to go initially. He usually has fun and expresses that when we are done. So maybe I can remind him of how much fun he has had in the past even if initially he is not excited about these activities. I also was not very active as a child, but I do remember biking a lot and enjoying the freedom. I started getting more physically active in high school. but the concecuences of that was going through childhood as a chunky kid and a struggle to control might weight as an adult. -
Any ideas on how to approach this topic?, I have a 9 year old and sometimes when we talk about the benefits of deferring gratification he gets frustrated and disengages from the conversation. He says he wants to do fun stuff in the moment. I have seen him get emotional when we talk about things that he is doing (playing video games etc) that are not going to help him achieve his dreams of working for a video game company when he grows up. It seems I'm not doing things right. any ideas on how to talk to kids about how doing things that are not as fun in the present can benefit them in the future? I would like for him to understand how exercising and playing games that exercise his brain have more benefit that silly games.

Adequately is a stretch

Why is it so important for some people to try to squeeze themselves into a specific gender? Why try to conform into being male or female? For example a woman who feels like she is a man will try her best to look and act like a man, and if someone makes the mistake of confusing her with a woman she will get offended and proclaim her man-ness. It just seems that people try to fit into these roles and apply concepts to themselves like if somehow that would give them value. It seems to me that the concept "men" and "women" when used differently, in biology it has a lot less gray area than when applied to psychology or sexual preference.

But is it really? Seems like arguing whether unicorn's can see in the dark or not. Or at which end of the rainbow leprechauns hide their gold.. -
You keep moving the bar. Now you talk about steroids prescribed by a doctor and monitored by a doctor? So now its about good tales from those people? Now you agree about the quick fix, and not having to work as hard. why does a 40 year old need or wants to be more muscular than he otherwise would be naturaly? So you doubt it was steroids that caused that guys liver damage? Could be. But I rather err on the safe side,
-
You wouldn't? Do you also put Hard drugs with steroids too? after all relative to the number of drug users they are not dropping like flies either. There's also the issue of quality, where would you get the steroids? from the big guy at the gym? What if he is giving you horse hormones? Just like with illegal drugs, chances are you will be putting crap in your body. I don't know what your experience is with weight lifting, but steroids ARE a quick fix, the average joe can build muscle in a matter of months. But just as easy as it comes it goes. That which comes easy is little valued. When you get use to the rapid results you don't commit to a lifestyle of lifting. People stop lifting and they deflate usually unevenly. I have seen it. Even friends. most recently my neigbor told me he did a cycle. He built muslce fast, but now stopped training. These people make amazing gains. then they stop and deflate. A guy I saw at the gym desapeared for a few months. Next time I saw him I could not recognize him but for the tattoo on his shoulder. Deflated and now with liver issues. I have nothing scientific but only imperical evidence. So take this for what is worth. Why would the average person need to build muscle beyond the natural human limit? I could be wrong, but I see the body as a complex chemical factory that even science has a hard time understanding. Any artificial unbalance compounds side effects that one cant even imagine. So I respect the body, I don't mess with it at a chemical level. but if you think differently you are welcome to try anything you want.
-
Are you arguing that steroid use has no bad side effect? Maybe, but there's something I find intriguing about people who go the extra mile for the quick fix, the steroids the botox and surgery. I myself have no interest on the stuff even if it makes me look like Arnold with no ill side effects. to each their own. I'm talking about people that put appearance as a big percentage of a person value. You are taking my comment to the extreme. where someone should not judge a book by its cover. Of course we do but whether one has 5% body fat or 15%? It almost becomes a sort of body dis morphia like eating disorders. Maybe I wasn't clear about the injuries. I meant complete separation of the muscles. The guy with the torn bicep had to bicep heads. I never got the see the other guy after it healed but the muscle will never look the same. In my experience extreme body building involves heavy lifting. mix that with a steroid high and one can very easily go over the body threshold and cause injury. Unhealthy because It seems there a physiological aspect that should not be ignored. I think that if you are lifting and have to resort to performance enhancing substances it might be worth to examine why you are doing it. To give you an example. I initially looked up to Arnold when I started lifting but over time realized that I person like Jack Lalanne was more worth of my admiration. I don't know if Jack ever took these drugs but what I mean is that I admire a body of say an Olympic athlete more than of a bodybuilder.

A friend asked me recently, "Do you go to the gym because its healthy, or because of the aesthetics". I have to admit that the question was interesting and made me pause to think. I have been weightlifting for 20years, usually every week. never more than 2 weeks off or so. If a person is lifting weights merely to look good with complete disregard to health they will engage in unhealthy behavior like "steroids" and Heavy lifting. For what it seems Zyzz was into this stuff. Over the years at gyms I've seem my share of similar guys doing this type of stuff. I've seen a Bicep torn in half and a Pectoral muscle also torn in half. The guy with the torn pectoral had a body like Zyss and bench pressed a lot of weight. A shame because he will never have the look he so valued. On the other hand, if lifting weights was healthy but produced no physical change on your body, would I still do it? I really can't say for sure. I certainly do physical activity that has minimal effect on the external body but I consider fun and healthy. I concluded that to me the gym was something I did instead of seating in front of the TV or in the computer. I sit all day at my job, so I have grown accustomed to giving my body the physical activity that i think it should get to stay healthy. I'm of the believe that "That that is used grows, if its not used it stifles". I see the physical changes from lifting weights as an added bonus. I currently lift weight to remain active, not to grow any more muscle, I don't expect to get any bigger and I'm ok with that. 3 times per week for little less than an hour lifting weights while listening to stef is actually fun for me. Sorry for the rant, but wanted to give you a little background before I give you my opinion. I don't think what Zyzz did was healthy. 1) the steroids and unhealthy lifting that people like him get involve with. 2) it seems like he was looking for an external solution to an internal problem. He had no respect because he was skinny. he was merely seeking the respect of people that put physical looks first. He didn't turn his world around he just joined the shallow people that rejected him in the first place. Tragic story. .

Why does China keep letting the U.S borrow money?
wdiaz03 replied to aFireInside's topic in Current Events
Another funny thing about inflation is that it matters how soon you get the money. Those at the front of the pipeline get the money first and get to spend it before prices go up, those who get it later see their purchasing power diminished. I like to see China not as an entity doing something. But as a elite group adding paper from foreign government to their balance sheet so they can stimulate their economy and have an excuse to print money at the expense of the working class. Ask who benefits. I used to hear Peter Schiff mention "When will the Chinese realize this and that" but not realizing how the ruling class is benefiting from the lending. To me is like saying "When will the Americans realize that raising the debt ceiling..." when Its again a group of people who benefit from these actions at the expense of those who get the money last. -
Dog training ..without punishment or intimidation
wdiaz03 replied to Nielsio2's topic in Peaceful Parenting
If The dog is sitting in a corner as expected how often would you have to click the clicker to tell him he is doing good? every minute? every 15mins? wouldn't it make more sense to use the clicker for the incorrect behavior? -
I have a 9y old boy that never did the nap thingy, We never forced him, We figured if he is tired he'll sleep. He never urinated in bed either. That was shocking to me because I remember doing it as a child and my mother having to change the sheets. I see parents forcing their kids to sleep at 9pm while my kid is wide awake past 11pm....he is up like a clock at 7am everyday and shows no sign of being tired. So I'm no expert but I'm playing it how I see it. and never tried to force things. It has not affected his learning one bit.
-
Yup is called "initiation of force" for a reason. Those who took the property to begin with initiated the force. the DRO is using force to get it back but they didn't initiate it.

Great suggestions love, Well try that approach. I do remember having conversations like this, his reply was, just like you said, "it feels weird" "it smells" so in a way I was asking some questions but I never looked at it from your point of view it is good to have that in mind. fer, you are correct. I feel like encouraging the use of a bidet at home would make it harder when he is outside the home where you don't find them.

C++ ofstream producing chinese text with string
wdiaz03 replied to AndyTheAnarchist's topic in Science & Technology
Sure, We might be splitting hairs here. I'm on the camp of explicit de-allocation, Why not free up the resource when you are done? In this code it goes out of scope immediately but when you have tons of lines of code it is nice to know you are done with that variable as soon as you are done with it. It makes it clear to whoever is reading the code. The wrong impression if exceptions occurs seems like a stretch compare to the alternative. but to each their own. -
My son is turning 9 and he has always called his parents or grandma to clean his butt after pooping. When asked why he doesn't try doing it himself he says that poop is dirty. I tell him it is a natural part of life. I always encourage him to try to do clean himself and that I would double check his work after. He usually complies. I have tried explaining that he needs to learn to clean himself because at school we will not be around to clean him. Also that he needs to practice because as he gets older he needs to be independent and the more he practices now the better he will get at it. Today I managed to convince him to clean himself and he did, and he said he did a good job. I didn't double check this time. He said there was no need. Any ideas of anything else I should be telling him?

C++ ofstream producing chinese text with string
wdiaz03 replied to AndyTheAnarchist's topic in Science & Technology
Yup I agree that good practices even if not necessary should be implemented in order to make them a habit. Any one else noticed that there's not a single comment? Comments help reveal the intent of the code. Not necessary but if the code needs to be maintained they help. I would also do fuckyou.close() to flush the buffer in your version of the program -
Howdy, It might be worth listening to Stef podcast on procrastination. I see one in the Bronze premium files. which comes from FDR966. see if that brings any insight.

C++ ofstream producing chinese text with string
wdiaz03 replied to AndyTheAnarchist's topic in Science & Technology
This program just seems to consume CPU time and disk space if the expected name is not typed. The file should be closed but the fact that the loop is infinite makes that a mute point. Also the bell escape sequence, does that do anything? I also don't like the style of multiple statements per line, I much rather see {} even if redundant and a statement per line. As far as the chinese characters I would open the file in HEX and see if the values match the ASCII equivalent of what you expect. You can open the file with notepad++ and play with the different encoding. Lians, If you are making the name local and passing it to the omg function by reference why not make that reference constant, since the name is not being changed. The endl makes more sense inside the for loop. it seems useless at the end of the file.
