Capitalism vs. Primitivism
wdiaz03 replied to Philosphorous's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Thanks for the reply. Wouldn't the knowledge of "how things turned out" be lost after a few thousand years? They will be no written records, all you'll have is cave paintings and campfire stories. Also I can see how people will want to ease their suffering and gradually control nature. Once a few love ones starve, or die of disease, wouldn't stories of "people planting food and having reserves year round and the wonders of medicine." also circulate? What would happen when people loose their eyesight? break a bone? become cripple? Who is going to carry these people for miles at a time? Would the cripple be allowed to ride a mule? to farm? "to each according to their needs?" I'm also curious of how this gradual move to hunter gatherers will happen, someone will have to be told "sorry, we can't do anything about the toothache" Kind of reminds me of a welfare recipient telling future generations. "hey, I can't give up my food stamps because I was born in this welfare state, I need those $500, But you have to do with just $300 sorry, and your children with $100" -

I agree with Wuzzums, But I know its not the point of the thread but it seems to me that going that fast is reckless. If he would have done that on his backyard then fine with me. It seems to me like allowing people to shoot their guns in the air then waiting for someone to drop dead to do something about it. Anyways feel fee to PM me if you don't want to hijack the thread. -
Too risky relying on the samurai to hand in the money. He can claim he payed the reward and keep it. the real assassin will have no way of collecting. If anyone on his list were to turn up dead It'll be interesting to see how long it will take the NSA to track this guy down, then confiscate all the accounts.

Hello, Yes, growing up we called each other names (not just Bob, but among everyone in the group), It was sort of a slang, like saying "Word up dawg?" I think it must have come from a LA mexican neighbor which was always saying that. To answer your question I felt just like if he would have said "Its me, bro", Looking back I can see how this is sort of silly. but the key is the intent was not to say I am a fool.

Capitalism vs. Primitivism

I'm curious on how you think the "new" hunter gathered man will be designed. I say designed because according to you there must be a gradual shift out of the cities and into the wild. Will you for example take a few survival classes but have your kid take 10 classes? will you force him to wipe using his fingers? etc. force him to fight off an infection without the benefit of modern medicine, take him to a shaman etc? Will you then instruct him to take his kids a step further, say out of controlled temperature home and into the backyard etc? eat bugs, and frogs? until, after some generations, the descendants are ready. As far addressing your 2 points? "Millions of years?" are you grouping modern man with Homo habilis, Homo erectus etc? Homo sapiens date back only 200K or so. And for all you know we are here because they were able to use their brain to conquer nature. But my point is. You say it has worked? But yet here we are and you keep dancing around the fact that your primitivism landed us here, so it didn't work. what is stopping it from happening again? Tell me if we go back to nature what is stopping people from ending up back in cities? How many of these tribes keep animals for future consumption? how many would trade surplus hunted animals for other things? Don't you think superstition have something to do with these so called respect of nature? -
Thanks for the replies. I received a text from Bob today, he says he was sorry and that his phone was action up, that he just got a new phone so he will be in touch. After given it much thought I think that what bothered me the most initially was not that I missed the old days, but the fact that I was friends with someone that could act so shallow and show little empathy. I would have been fine with a "Now is not a good time, maybe some other time, etc". I feel a lot clearer now, even before receiving this new text. I have no idea if he will ever get in touch and it really does not matter much at this point. I left the ball on his court. If he returns it I'll play it from there, if he doesn't so be it. Thanks again.

I hear you, But there's value in doing a little self knowledge prior to confronting him. For example, do you know if you want to keep the relationship as is? with him dropping a note here and there whenever he feels like it? how do you respond to that? Or do you rather drop the pretenses of a relationship and clearly state that this shallow chick chat is not for you? Like I picture bumping into this guy on the street some day. How do you respond to a "Good to see you?" or "How are you doing?" Do you say "Good, man Thanks, I have to run, bye" etc. I'm still processing all that.

Thanks Brian, Yes I have. But I want to sort out my emotions first, I wanted to get the forum's perspective to explore all possible angles. For example, I talked this over with a friend and asked her if this seemed like a shallow "bday text" from him. Just like the "How you doing" that people engage with at work etc. Her words "Yeah its super shallow, he was not expecting your curiosity and now is recoiling back". Well she has a good point. but I can understand that from a coworker. Where after the "how you doing?" you start telling them how you are really feeling. But from someone you spent years with it seems like a slap in the face. I much have rather him not contact me at all that have this meaningless texts once a year.

Bob was a High school friend, we spent a lot of time together, played sports, video games, you name it. He spend time at my house and I would spend time at his house etc. We was tight! When I started college Bob started working in IT and we saw each other less ,we kept in touch by email. After college I got married and so did Bob. Contact dropped off and I noticed he was slow at replying to my emails. About 4 years ago I stopped by his new house, we made small talk and I left after a few mins. Eventually he stop replying to my emails. About 2 years ago I bumped into a friend of Bob and I asked how he was doing, that he no longer replied to my texts or emails. He said that people change etc. and that he had a kid recently.A few days ago I get a text from Bob wishing me a happy birthday.Bob - Happy birthday bro.Me - Who is this? Is this who I think it is?Bob - Its Bob fool.Me - Oh wow, so great to hear from you.Me - I though about you a lot, I thought you wanted space or something, what made you reach out?.....Several minutes passMe - Drop me and E-mail if you want to catch up. Thanks again for the birthday note.----- Next dayMe - Hey reply, Or do I have to wait until next bday to hear from you?Now this behavior irritates me because I would never ignore someones texts or emails. I always make an effort to reply as soon as I can. Specially someone who I share so many years of my life with. I don't know whats going through his mind, I'll I can judge is the behavior and it show little empathy. It seem to me that there's little left of the friendship we had and that it can probably never be salvaged. My question is how do I move forward?Should I do nothing and if he ever texts me again just ignore it and not bother, Or should I tell him how I feel and recommend that if he is going to act that shallow that it is better to not even contact me again? I appreciate your input in this matter since this guy could have dropped his phone on the toilet for all I know. What are the odds?

The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements
wdiaz03 replied to fractional slacker's topic in Science & Technology
Its better to get all your nutritional needs from whole foods. I agree. But that's just like saying its better to not get sick. My point was that I've always believed in taking multivitamins as an insurance against deficiencies in my diet. I have no clue what nutrients the foods that I eat contain, so for me pooping a pill every morning is at best beneficial or the worse a waste of a few bucks. -

I agree, here. You want to spread your message and be as effective as possible. The fact that you are encountering resistance here means that you are not being as effective as you can be. You come across as the fat guy with a diet book. you are using technology and modern methods of communication to speak against technology. Why not get a plantain tree leaf (don't take it from the tree, that would be against the NAP, wait for it to fall off) and write your message with some natural dye. Stand in a corner and practice delivering your message in proper attire. This is important because this is closer to the way you will have to communicate in your future. This argument also applies to you, Lets assume you get your wish, How can it be ensured that the thousands of hunter gatherer groups across the planet will stay as hunter gatherers? Someone might decide to follow the same path to modern society just like it was done in the past. Domesticating animals and plats, building towns, agriculture...etc. How wold you deal with people that do not accept your ideas? This is why it is important for you to rethink your approach, you won't have the luxury of mass media and internet in that future. This can be applied to primitivism as well, Just swap "The market" for "Primitivism" in your statement: "Primitivism" started ... and then ended up the abomination we have today. With agriculture and money comes hierarchies, domination, etc. and of course, people are going to do that to humans too" Also try to be as honest as possible when delivering your message. You speak of tree genocide, just make sure you don't paint a rosy picture of your future to your audience because they'll pick up on the deception as most are doing here. Just mention that the genocide instead of trees and animals will just be shifted to humans. That most of them will see babies and mothers die of childbirth, people die of snake bites and simple infections, parasites, animal attacks (Just in India recently a wild tiger has killed several people), the old would have to wonder off to the woods to die when they become a burden to the group etc. but note that this is just natural and how humans lived in the past. Again just want you to be as effective as possible with your message. -

Given that Gods are all-knowing, wouldn't they see through that deception? Given the number of religions and gods and that some gods are jealous gods, wouldn't it be even worse if you pray to the wrong one? you get the idea. -

I admire your courage in testing your believes. But to get the most out of this lesson you should live of the land with no modern objects. nothing that's the result of modern society should be used. for example it would be misleading to future generations if you survive using things like cotton clothes and artificial fabrics, modern shoes, etc since these will not be available after the current supply of these things is used up and cease to exist. It is important for you to test how friendly the environment is to living things, a good idea would be to look at the Amazon tribes for an idea on what should be permissible. Also it is important to note that these tribes do keep animals for food, and use trees to build shelter, is that necessary? or it a a slippery slope to begin dominating nature and ease their struggle to survive? In determining "what you truly needed" it is best to just take from the earth what you need at the moment. anything extra could mean life or death to another living thing. Do ask your trainer how feasible does he think your ideas are as well. Best of luck! -

All I wanted to hear, So you will use force against me, for domesticating a donkey, how a bout for cutting a tree? Didn't you say that your "primitivism" was voluntary on the call in show? Way to follow your own advice....You don't seem honest to me on your responses so far, What do you expect from this interactions? do you want to change others minds? Are you looking for feedback on possible flaws on your believes? -

I couldn't read it all mike. But Isn't it much more efficient to just advice the pope to return the world to the manufacturer for warranty? obviously any defect in the product is the manufacturer's fault. I say return it, and if He can't fix it on the third try we invoke a lemon law and force him to take it back!

Assuming man gives up this "dominion over the earth" and moves back to the caves, what prevents people from developing a civilization with technology like we have today again? Say we all live in the trees now and I find a baby donkey whose mother was killed. Can I not use him as a beast of burden? to carry my bags and spin my stone mill, Can I not breed my donkey and sell the offspring? What would your society have to do to keep this from happening? -
I expect the sale of BB guns to soar when this gets implemented. (Yeeehaa, I got me 'nother one of them fly'ng things, momma!)

I'll be concerned with this approach short-circuiting valuable lessons related to time preference. By getting paid you are reinforcing immediate gratification instead of teaching sacrificing the now for the benefit of the future. He will be getting paid but not with money, its his future self receiving the payment in the form of knowledge. why not reinforce that? Why not teach him how our current self can be grateful for what our past self have done? for example. I'm glad that my past self decided to learn how to juggle. It wasn't fun picking up balls from the floor all the time and the constant practice. but now my current self can sort of juggle, If i stick to it my future self can become good enough to entertain kids at birthday parties. So in a way I pay it forward to my future self as thanks to my past self. I'm no expert, just something to consider. But it seems its better to explore the "do it because its good for you" rather than "do it for the money"

The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements
wdiaz03 replied to fractional slacker's topic in Science & Technology
With that said and giving the relative low cost of a "one a day" type supplement, Wouldn't it be harmless (even beneficial ) to take the supplement anyways? My argument is that given the level of activity of most people today the amount of food that they need is much lower than say if they had to walk miles everyday or chase animals. Given the lower intake of food then the amount of vitaminsminerals might also be lower. Add to that that modern mass-produced food might come from nutrient depleted soil. You might be able to get all vitamin/minerals if you follow the food pyramid, but those who eat that way might also get fat if they don't burn all those calories. this is just speculation I have no proof for any of it. -
I enjoyed it because I like to learn the tricks that are being used by scam artists. I put the knowledge right next to the guy selling those electromagnetic bracelets, "scam school" on youtube has some nice videos of this type.
