Interesting, I always saw work as a fact of life. Just like a caveman had to chase his food, keep his tools in shape, shelter. You can hate it or you can accept it. You can be angry but then its double the work. So I reached a sort of closure at an early age. Single parent, poor. but my mother lived such that money never seem to be a problem, she had little needs. very frugal. and we lived with the "Is not getting what you want, its liking what you get" mentality. I started working at 15, minimum wage jobs and helping family members with their business on the side (Hard labor). that was an eye opener, (you can be the guy sweating outside or you can be inside in an office) So since I had made my peace with work I just knew I had to find a job I liked (in an office with AC) and i pursued that goal. since I started working at 15 I always had a job. One thing I enjoy from what my mother thought me is the freedom from work itself. you don't have to take crap because you have the means to quit and find something better, being able to sleep at night because you have little worries about money. knowing that if you wanted to buy something or take a vacation the money was there. That if you get laid off you can cover expenses a long time while you find another job. My worse nightmare is living day to day, all money earned going to pay bills and no savings.

Question about Friedrich Hayek
wdiaz03 replied to BaylorPRSer's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
This would surprise me, Do you know the source? I did find some evidence that Hayek compromised on some of capitalist principles http://mises.org/journals/jls/12_2/12_2_6.pdf.b This critique from Walter Block seems interesting. -
What was the American society like in the past? in the 1950s and before? could it be that the government has gradually caused society to be what it is now? And are you implying that the government should discourage gun ownership?

Ha, Don't give him any ideas, there's no telling what TT will do with The Last Supper -
Well, which is it? Could it also be that the US is less homogeneous that other countries and people don't tend to relate to each other as much? It seems these melting pot is bound to cause some friction among the different groups.

I imagine that the culture differences could be a challenge. Best of luck

Has Stefan done any podcasts/videos on hoarding?
wdiaz03 replied to annamoo's topic in Self Knowledge
Podcast 2504 Wednesday show briefly mentions hoarding at 2:36:35 as part of a caller's dream analysis. It provides some good points in my opinion. -
The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements
wdiaz03 replied to fractional slacker's topic in Science & Technology
So he was 93 when he died, and this is with the massive quantities of supplements he was allegedly taking. How long do you think he would have lived without them? -
Hmmm I wonder why Gods don't just come out with new editions of their holy books every few year or so. It seems much easier than to have their followers use ancient language to explain current knowledge. I mean I can understand that such an all knowing being can create a book that does not need revising but I can see that He/She also does not want to reveal too much detail in the texts that it would freak the people with information they are not yet ready to process.. For example: In the 500BC edition it would read "In the beginning there was nothing and God created the heavens and the earth. separated the water from the sky" etc In the 1550AC edition "In the beginning there was nothing and God created stars and a special start he called the Sun and he created the round earth.among other planets. separated the water from the sky using gravity" etc In the 1930AC edition "In the beginning there was nothing and God created stars in clusters he called galaxies and a special start he called the Sun and he created the earth.among other 8 planets. separated the water from the sky using gravity" etc In the 2006AC edition "In the beginning there was nothing and God created stars tha shine by nuclear fission grouped in clusters he called galaxies and a special start he called the Sun and he created the earth.among other 7 planets and other dwarf planets. separated the water from the sky using gravity" etc I think this makes much more sense and does not diminishes the holiness of the holy texts at all, There's practically no difference in having someone 2000 years ago write the book by divine intervention than having people today revise it using the same divine intervention. In fact it would be a better idea since it will show the readers than the author is still interested in the subject matter.

I'm not going to bother with your comments, It seems obvious to me that you are not looking for any productive discussion here.

Fair enough, but as a different perspective. What is the governments recommendation regarding exercise? And how many people do it? And how many do it for the right reasons. (not counting guys on steroids and the "I want to look good no matter what" crowd?) I think it is a bigger problem than "expert fault". It seems to be a culture of looking at the body as a means to an end, A temporary vessel to be used for the pleasure of the mind. People drink alcohol, smoke, do drugs, eat junk food, get into debt, procrastinate. Its all about living the moment because tomorrow you might die. Then tomorrow comes and everyone tries to escape the consequences of their actions. I can't treat people like little children, I want to give them the respect they deserve as human beings and that means accepting the consequences. So yes, the government and experts can say what they want but ultimately it is your body and you have to decide. I mean Atkins was ringing the "sugar and processed food" bell since 1958 or so. The information was out there. All that was required was a few months of trial to see results. But this is not what people want, people want their cake and eat it too.

There's a Podcast on the Bronce section called "Truth about divorce" along those lines, that might offer some insight in case you have not heard it. How old are the kids? if you don't mind sharing.

Not sure where you are going with this. Are you taking it out of context? As I see it when he says "people eat too much" I understood to mean "these obese people that I talked about earlier eat too much" Do you not agree with this statement? at 5:04 "...The whole point is that people make bad choices, they get sick and then they panic..." I think it is important whether obesity and related problems come as the result of "bad choices". Do you believe this to be the case?

I've seen some of my post get down voted just because that person does not agree with my views, I'm not being abusive. I've noticed the same with other posts with views similar to mine in the same thread even. For now If I come across posts that I suspect have been down voted in this manner I just use my vote to at least make them neutral. I suggest we all do the same, and we can at least control those few individuals that use this feature as a way to censoring others.

My two cents, my initial reaction when watching both videos, (Attia and Stefan) was that The Dr was wrong for judging this particular patient before knowing the details of how she ended up how she did. He basically jumped to conclusions. Stefan was talking about a general trend that people that are obese eat way too much. These arguments are different. Just because obesity is caused by bad eating habits does not mean that a particular obese person has bad heating habits. The Doctor was incorrect. Stefan is citing statistics and general trends. I think this is a gray area to determine how much personal responsibility a person has regarding the types of food he/she eats. Part government propaganda, part media, part personal responsibility. Does it matter if obesity causes these diseases? Maybe its a good (probable) indicator of bad eating habits and poor lifestyle choices. The majority of people that loose weight and gain it all back most likely do not understand the role food plays in their bodies or/and may have psychological issues with food. If they do not understand the role of food they drastically cut back their intake and loose weight, this drastic reduction is not sustainable and the minute they start eating like before the weight returns. If they have psychological issues it might make it harder to stick to a particular eating lifestyle since they see food as a drug or type of comfort. Mechanisms to stop cravings? maybe therapy can help...knowing the why. Most people jump into a diet without knowing the why, I think that's a recipe for failure. I think it is important to first understand why one is overweight before even considering the best plan of action. "Know thyself"

How Saying No to McDonald's Might Lead to Dad Losing Custody
wdiaz03 replied to Just's topic in Current Events
My point exactly, The father could have chosen to share this type of information (Assuming the kid was after burgers and nuggets, but we'll never know now) For example, My son wanted nothing to do with Mcdonalds after he saw a youtube video of their fries lasting weeks before decomposing. -
How do you go from being an atheist to an agnostic?
wdiaz03 replied to Mick Bynes's topic in Atheism and Religion
Regardless of the field what matters is who pay the bills. So if a dude walks on water, how would your views change? Claiming that the argument is a waste of time is not a "rebuttal" Noone dedicates their life "to proving that you shouldn't be a skier, or golfer". because last time I checked is not on the golfers and skiers manuals to kill all those who do not sky or golf. Or those groups fighting to include that those sports should be mandatory in public schools, or that if you do not practice the sports you cannot hold public office. -
How Saying No to McDonald's Might Lead to Dad Losing Custody
wdiaz03 replied to Just's topic in Current Events
Seems strange doesn't it? Specially for someone growing up with parents imposing their will on them. What I find sad is the lack of curiosity from new people on the board. There's hardly a "Ahh, Why do you think that way?" or "I see, What would you think would happen if option B is followed?" followed by "But don't you think that C would follow B?" instead people push their believes around like car through a crowd. They see a new concept that's foreign to them and they just step on the gas... I might be getting less patient with old age, but I find it harder to even explain my points of view when I notice the reckless driving and lack of curiosity. -
Thanks for the post. Just the other night I was looking at Venus and the moon with my cheap $70 Telescope. I'll have to admit that Venus was not much to look at, it looked like a first quater moon, But Jupiter last year was incredible. About the size of a pea and one could clearly see the clouds on it and 3 of its moons. And with a cheap telescope. A Celestron PowerSeeker 70AZ If anyone is interested in it.

Great, So your approach is to use the "wishful thinking" argument? How would is seem if I showed up at a medical forum and claimed there was a "fatal flaw" with current cancer treatments methods, that with current methods certain people died etc. When asked, I say "Some people get better treatment than others based on location and wealth"..."Well not all cancer cells are killed"...or "The basic DNA structure that produce cancer cells is never modified, increasing the likelihood of cancer reoccurring". - "I see", they would reply, "how would you approach it then?" - "Well, I don't know. but a problem exits...you see." - "Have you even looked at books in the matter?" - "Nah. but please explain them to me.." At these point they would back away from me slowly....which is what I'm going to do.
-
You can't expect to change someone's mind with those arguments, I find it that is easier to read the experts first before trying to reinvent the wheel. Its going to save you time and effort because your arguments are plain silly, This is not an attack at you, but there's nothing impressive in them at all, you repeat yourself and avoid the main objections. Do you expect to be taken seriously? It would be the equivalent of me showing up at a physics forum and starting my first post with "fatal flaw with the theory of relativity" then posting some stuff that does not prove anything at all. For example: some of your indisputable points: #3 - Already dealt with in many books #4 - Wrong. Basic economics here. I can give back massages, dance, therapy etc #7 - Wrong. On a free market natural monopolies must be extremely efficient to remain monopolies. Hence my suggestion to be a little more humble in your approach, Ask questions, see if you are the one that is not seeing a key point. Have you considered that you could be wrong on this issue? I'll be happy to change my mind if you present good arguments. BTW I'll be happy to hear your solution to the "fatal flaw"
-
Indisputable? Lets try to be a little more humble. Have you considered that maybe just maybe the argument you are putting forward may have already been considered by experts in the field? Have you read any of Rothbard books? I'm not going to bother with this stuff, I'm sorry but its hard to take you seriously when up to this point you just point to the obvious and and use that to make flawed arguments like the ones above. Would love to hear your ultimate solution to this "fatal flaw of free market"

How Saying No to McDonald's Might Lead to Dad Losing Custody
wdiaz03 replied to Just's topic in Current Events
You are running to the other extreme here, What if the kid just wanted a "Happy meal" for the toy. or wanted to play on the playground? The Point is that we will never know because the father never bothered to ask. For all we know he wanted a grilled steak and the kid was getting in his way. I say treat children like adults who do not have all the information to make the right decisions. Ask, suggest, negotiate.
