typical dillusion, and sentiment towards abstracts. Plus the dreaded "love it, or leave it". You can only be the beacon of courage for those who understand the mess they're in, everyone else essentially deserves the coercion and violence they've chosen to accept as reality. Well, maybe not deserves... but what do you say for people who choose to believe theft is productive? Love em or leave em. I leave A manageable system on the local level has been the bane of existence for 2300ish years. Problem is... barbarians at the gates, and people always want security. Food, security, and freedom to be curious -- all compromised with barbarians at the gates. Which is always my biggest beef without a form of monopolized violence. Yea, yea im contradicting myself, but having an ACTUAL gun pointed at your head from someone who doesn't claim to be protecting you is worlds different from one who is claiming to protect you since no humanitarian concerns are relevant. So... I accept this taxation w/out representation so my kid can continue to find peace in the garden snakes and geese at my house - just as I did at his age

hah! Hypocrisy can sometimes be so cringeworthy its actually enjoyable. After reading the book I did see alot of parallels b/w his opinions and those of the FDR community as you said. It was refreshing to come across a few novel ones too which made it a worthwhile read yea... You must have glossed over what I wrote at the top. He recognizes the need to abandon the coercive structures of school, as tasmlab wrote, by starting with the individual and defending liberty. Which sounds like big glossy glittering generalities, but it's written in terms of trying to incorporate first principals into school

Discussed at work today. When I say all taxation is taxation w/out representation, blank stares abound. Anyone care to chime in

Because they're fat, dumb, and happy - and it doesn't get any better than that

Has anyone read this book yet? It came out a few weeks ago and is only about 200 pages. Endorses home schooling. Endorses Austrian economics, and 'alternative' forms of economics not taught K-12. Focuses on the philosophy of liberty (how to define and defend), and the non-coercive/non-authoritarian necessities of public education, putting children and parents in charge, etc. Really a great book, say what you will about the fellow - but I still see him as a hopeful bridge to authentic anarchism. Hell, because of Ron Paul 4 years ago I found Stef! I thought it was really a great book and will hopefully be read by a good deal of folks

Not to change the subject, but is this honestly the kind of world you want to live in? Every decision we make on a daily basis matters.. right? If people can't handle doing their own damn work they are not cut out for the material. Facilitating another person's deception is no way to get ahead in life

So moving out of town is out of the question? If this at all helps you, when I went to the University of Washington I lived in a studio that only cost $350 w/ bath and kitchen, and that was typical for the area. Sometimes, to get buy, you're not afforded the luxury of the town you choose to live in. It all comes down to what are you willing to sacrifice for your independence, and recognize too by moving, youre not running away from any problems. It's a part of growth, becoming your own man, gettin out in the world and screwing things up. For every old relationship you leave behind there's plenty more waiting for you. By the way, you're actually able to 'control' the amount you borrow for your loan, i.e., if you need more, you go to the F.A. office and they'll send some more funds your way. Also, if you dont have a bank account, go set one up so you can get direct depost. With the direct deposit you get your funds a week before the term starts, without it... you get your money 2-3 weeks into the term! It sucks. Anything pops up dude, send me an email, private message, whatever. I'm at work, so I got all the time to spend on FDR!

Any JC, or university, will have a financial aid office where you can get information on loans. If you havent had a job since last january you are guaranteed loans AND grants. If you've worked in the last 21 months you may be entitled only to loans (depending on what you've made). Also, to help your financial aid you will have to tell your parents they can't claim you on their tax return for next year. Have you ever filled out a FAFSA?, if so jjust check the boxes indicating you are interested in loans for next year to get that rollin. In the mean time you can get in contact with a guaranteed student loan vendor on campus throuh the financial aid office to get money immediately. I was in a similar situation, i just graduated a few years ao, and needed to get outside the structured environment of home life too - I know the feelin. Sometimes when you feel its really time to go, it really is. Have you ever considered moving out of town? You can get on board with a computer science major at any JC in the country, especially with that gpa (damn good job by the way). Fly the coup man, move to fuckin mexico! puerto rico! south carolina! Let me know if you got any more Student Loan / Grant questions, I know I can atleast help you out there. ps. Dont drop out of school, you will regret that shit like herpes a few years down the raod, and will kick yourself in the ass for it everday.

Reading and living a book are two different scenarios. Either way its a good start. Cool to see another nerd on board. I only donate when I'm broke, i'd end up spending it on fancy cheese and booze anyways

Sounds damn good and easy on the wallet. If that grill/iron skillet is hot, throw the bell pepper in for a minute - roast that baby up and scrape off the char. Roasted bell pepper >> raw bell pepper.

Bear in mind that not all 'Americans' were in favor of "breaking" with Brittain as you say. An overwhelming amount of settlers seen it as nothing more than swapping one tyranny for an unexperienced tyranny. That being said, the Sugar Act and Stamp Act played a strong role, as well as good ol political banter, guys like Thomas Paine (Englishman!) writing things like, "there is something absurd, in supposing a continent to be perpetually governed by an island” helped to rouse up American spirits

Very cool topic. As an employee and graduate of life sciences - its something I hold near and dear. As you know, start-up costs in biology are immense, just overwhelmingly huge when you look at costs of even benchtop, small-scale equipment. Hurdles in a free society, IMO, will be analogous to what we have in front of us today. Money: If an investor puts their capital into anything with a moderate risk, they're going to want moderate returns. That noted, R&D funding will always be a tough sale for a scientist/engineer without a track-record. Apprenticeships are a neccessary start. Safety: The bureaucratic biosafety levels are pretty damn strict at even the lower echelons, e.g., negative pressure rooms, containment and waste-handling, etc. In a world with a legitimate sense of community, these will be self-evident - no one wants to expose friends to undue risk. My beacon of hope for at home science nerds is the rise of all the open-source software in biology. Anyone who has ever used PyMOL, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PyMOL - a 3d protein structure software, must have a huge respect for folks who dedicate their time to help others learn. The next step is just getting the hardware. How cool would it be to have community-based science groups who can pitch in for a PCR set-up to make point mutations to check for new activity in drugs/protein etc?

Racist Brother has a Newborn - I can seriously use some help
Just replied to Just's topic in Peaceful Parenting
Nah, im happy for the guy and honestly thought that starting a family could be the best thing for him. 1 - Yeah. But it doesn't mean i'm not going to feel like shit if the kid is raised in an environment that eventually winds him up in life in jail for being a victim of circumstance or whatever you want to call it. 2 - He lives 2,000 miles away, and hasn't been 'close by' for a number of years. Nice. I appreciate everyones input on this hopeless case. I had talked to my brother a few weeks ago and told him if his kid is raised with his dad's delusional beliefs the kids going to wind right up in jail. With jail to him being a place where he found some like-minded folk that wasn't a problem... hermphsdkl,,, This is honestly just a matter of "how in the hell can someone think that way?" and me not ready to accept it cause hes my family. Probably happened 1,000x on here, so everyones patience is wildly appreciated -

That's where I'm trying to step in. He would never consider therapy, as in his mind, it's not a problem in need of fixing. I'm really just trying to set up a conversation with him where I can go in prepared for any nonsense he tries to hide in. I'm hoping someone else may have had a similar experience/heard of experiences etc with happily ever after endings -
My brother got jumped in middleschool (early 90s) by a couple of black dudes and carried alot of hate for any race that wasn't white thereafter. He wound up in jail after highschool for selling weed and wound up joining up with some white power yahoos in there. He's recently had a kid, a healthy strapping young boy who seriously does nothing but laugh laugh and laugh. Greatest tempered kid I have ever fucking met in my life. I've been talking with my brother lately about FDR and avenues for raising the kid in an environment without hate/unneccessary conflict because of something that happened to him. I've seen a few posts about self-righteous folk and how they're akin to talking to a wall. I cant get myself to tell him, "if you raise that kid to indiscriminately hate I'll never talk to you/abandon you etc". man... if anyone could give me a few words on how I can help my brother and his family I can really use it. I love my brother to death and it kills me to turn the other cheek and abandon the only person I had to talk to after our mom passed away.

One of the many low points in US history. Once the children (if lucky) returned to their families, not only were they incapable of speaking fluent english, they were incapable of speaking with their own families since native tongue was forbidden in the schools. If you got some time and some pent up tears in need of release, browse through Zitakala-Sa's journal - "The School Days of an Indian Girl" here: http://www.facstaff.bucknell.edu/gcarr/19cusww/zs/SDIG.html They'd shave their heads which was reserved in the tribe for shaming the worst of the worst on top of all kinds of other physical and psychological abuse in these 'schools'.

Hey ael.. You can preview the majority of the book "Children of the Japanese State: Changing Role of Child Protection Institutions" in google books. There was a battery of returns when I queried 'abuse' in the book. I don't have the time to pierce through the whole book, but I did see some interesting historical origins of 'child protection' institutions. Maybe give her a glance for a couple minutes, the ejoko query brought nada though

Righteo Pep, thats the whole issue here. The quibbling was an objection to an established definition. Rudeness wasn't my intention, but when I see a theory attempted to be undercut based on an individuals slight objection or criticism to the diction involved... it just kinda makes me giggle. i.e. I disprove of reason = virtue = happiness because happiness is just the opposite of sadness, and therefore the absence of reason will equal sadness which we know is untrue when one considers the blissfully ignorant. Trane, I am all ears if there is a missing railcar in the... train of successive observations leading to the fact that some folk are allowed to behave violent while other's aren't... I just don't see it here

Scary article, thanks for posting it. Would you be in favor of a system making food stamps redeemable only at chow halls preparing food 24/7? Understanding of course that food is just one part of welfare
