You went a long way from me explaining that scrutiny of immigrants is warranted to the deportation and reeducation of my neighbors. If I were to institute a test, it would be against the value statement of the US--the Declaration of Independence--and the charter--the Constitution--and go from there. Once you are here you are free, but getting here should be because you want to join the freedom club and not the gravy train. It's not up to me, so it's only a thought experiment.

When people on facebook say "everyone does that" they really mean that their parents did that. I've seen it in spanking threads, and the arguing over trivia thing sounds similar to me.

It's simple, you don't want people to move next to you and have the ability to vote for policies that don't share your values. You certainly don't want people moving next to you who hate you and your values. This is not a "pro-Trump" thing but a self-defense thing.

Thoughts on the brain virus that is #ResistCapitalism?
shirgall replied to PrinceptsRob's topic in Current Events
The concept of individual resistance to what champions individual choices has enough cognitive dissonance in its own construction alone that engaging the statements that have that hashtag is probably a letdown. The only way to resist capitalism is to wield state power. That's not resistance, that's jackboots. -
Mindblowing way to analyze the first 6 Star Wars films
shirgall replied to TheRobin's topic in Reviews & Recommendations
I don't mind the idea that he had a great idea for writing it all, but the execution was rather flawed. It is interesting to see how increasing singular control of the films decreased their quality on successive iterations, whether or not he had a great idea for their structure. -
Not just a FFL but a Class III dealer. Not trivial. Did you know that even becoming an FFL requires signoff of your landlord or HOA? Stef's point remains, the state wants to monopolize violence.

There are exceptions of course. Police can get fully automatic stuff, and regular citizens can go through an annoying process and tax to own fully automatic firearms made before 1968.

Makes it harder to justify as a "collective" of any sort at that point.

Nationalism makes sense when a nation has shared values, especially when those values are based on reason and evidence. No nation has ever reached this state (pun intended).

1000+ Gang attack/Rape in Cologne on New Years Eve
shirgall replied to mlsv2f's topic in Current Events
Since the traditional role has men pretty much killing themselves for access to eggs, and killing men who took eggs that weren't theirs to take, in return for women actually making an effort to be nice, it's kinda a mixed bag. Some new paradigm is needed. -

Misrepresenting Election Outcomes
shirgall replied to Bleak Morn's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
I was once membership director of a state's Libertarian Party. Identification as a libertarian--even registering to vote as a libertarian--does not make one a libertarian. There's even a lot of disagreement on what being a "libertarian" is. Instead, you have to judge people by what they do. One of the most contentious issues of the party for a decade was charging members dues. Can you imagine? People are not often encouraged to look deeply at themselves or their deeply-held tenets or even their methodologies. They are just asked what they think. And a lot of people don't really think about what their off-the-cuff opinion is going to be on a lot of subjects. -
Self Defence & The State
shirgall replied to Nick900's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
You can justify lethal force against people that are actively taking steps to kill you, sure, but everyone around them that may be uninvolved? No. -
Self Defence & The State
shirgall replied to Nick900's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
The circumstance that justifies lethal force is the immediate, otherwise unavoidable, danger of death or grave bodily harm to oneself or the innocent. You may defend the person in #2 if you know they are innocent of initiating the aggression. A state could claim self-defense in the face of a declared war or apparent invasion. A state could claim self-defense if its innocent citizens were being attacked. And the moral difference between proactive and reactive lethal force goes back to my very first statement. -
This is, of course, a trick question, since omnipotence as a capability is logically inconsistent.

That sounds pretty sinister. How gauche to point it out. (Left-handed people have been on the bad end of language for a long time.)

They don't, except as a construction of the state. Corporations are legal fictions intended to give specific powers to people that others do not have, specifically limiting the liability of investors and employees.

A lot of the time they are downplaying the issue by giving is a light agreement and condescendingly imply that some other issue is far more worthy of spending their precious attention. When I encounter whataboutrists it's all about steering the conversation to subjects that more comfortably serve their agenda.
