What is true that they can be converted one into another in a standard ratio, and in combination the total amount cannot be created nor destroyed. What makes the situation more difficult is that bodies don't exist in closed systems, they have a multitude of adaption mechanisms that interfere with expected results, and, frankly, mental state can drive a lot of those mechanisms more than anyone expects. A plan you trust and covers all the bases that gives you desireable results is what is needed, getting there is a radically different path for every individual.

Do You Always Have To Finish What You Started?
shirgall replied to MysterionMuffles's topic in Self Knowledge
I used to be a "completionist" gamer, but I eventually came to the realization that I bought the game to entertain myself, not to give myself work. Maybe, sometimes, it was "something to do" but as Stef says when you are doing one thing, you aren't doing other things... Reading all the books in a series used to be a pastime, but I discovered how to put down a series of books, even if I bought them, when I ceased enjoying them. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant comes to mind... how many ways can you say "argent"? -
How to Spot the Unempathetic: Reading Body Language

Speaking of Amy Cuddy, it's worth looking at her TED talk about power poses, too: http://www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are Oops, I notice that one of the youtube videos is her talk after all, I guess it just bears repeating...- 16 replies

A lot of anxiety comes from not knowing what to do next... do you have a plan for what you want to do after you've finished? Do you feel like you have a choice about what you are doing now?

Having a plan is better than no plan. Therefore, the answer to "recommendations for diet and exercise" is "yes, have both."

I'd go further. The intent of feedback is improvement. The intent of criticism is assessing value, often for the purpose of comparison.

In the interests of customer service, a lot of retailers would rather give the customer the best specific advice so long as the customer will return to the store for other items. In my own business I do things like this too, emphasizing that the customer's freedom of choice is important to me and my company.

Contracts should be easy. "I will do x and give y. You will do x' and give y'. If we disagree, we will solve it by doing z." But, just like philosophical discussions, the participants get bogged down in the details and definitions. There have been attempts to fix the definitions with things like the Uniform Commercial Code and so on, but not even all the states can agree to that one (we're looking at you, Louisiana). In come the lawyers to fix things by adding tons and tons of words that have been carefully argued about for a zillion years. That sure helped, didn't it? As someone who writes Statements of Work that end up in contracts, I'm just as frustrated by how hard it is to do well.

Above average skill *and* above average luck *and* above average importance... And, if I was going to pick a nit, there's a long tail in the distribution and therefore a bias (and therefore a curve that centers to the right) of driving skill of those on the road, because below a certain minimum they can't pass the driving test. Imagine the curve that showed the distribution of ages of drivers. Extremely few below 18, but the long tail could stretch out to 100. Average age of a driver will be higher than the average age of people in general.

Having things be a little chilly in general helps with weight loss, however the adaptation discussed in the video makes sense for athletic performance. I should add this article that indicates sauna use *before* exercise is preferred: http://vitals.lifehacker.com/use-the-sauna-before-not-after-your-workout-1697050871

I should mention my Xbox gamertag is similarly obvious.

While Tolkien supposedly despised allegory, I always interpreting the many rings (9 for men, 3 for elves, 7 for dwarves) as an allusion to the separation of powers in representative governments and how they utterly failed to prevent tyranny (the one ring).

There's plenty of people that feel they are above average drivers, more lucky than most, and have more important things to do than others.

We're pretty easy going on topics and techniques here. For example, it is a no-no to argue about determinism, but it comes up all the time. All it takes to change my mind is credible evidence.

Confession comes across to me as a way to apologize without actually apologizing to the people you've hurt. True penance is about making things right not making obeisance.
