  1. All committed agreements are implicit contracts, the point of the written contract is to merely think about the edge cases and agree on how to handle them. There doesn't have to be a forceful component to it, but in general people want to know how they are covered if something goes wrong. If I ask someone to build me a house and I decide to break the contract, what happens? It could be as simple as an insurance policy that pays the guy that built half a house for his efforts. It doesn't have to be liens.
  2. I think my wife has a bit of the apocalypse bug, but for the most part we focus on the realities of rural living: power outages, earthquakes, and flooding that might mean having to put up your neighbors for a bit. The shooting part is my bug, the canning part is hers. It doesn't impact our lives too much, but we do have some food, some odd toys, and we do the occasional airsoft, paintball, or lasertag thing for fun. We certainly don't hope to need things, but it's kinda nice that when you run out of something you don't have to go to the store. We just make sure we have a backup. And who doesn't like beans?
  3. Remember the Saturnalian tradition is one of reversals: a holiday from work and school, slaves became masters and masters became slaves, gambling was permitted when it is normally banned, people wear clothes they'd not otherwise wear, gifts and gag gifts were given (sometimes with attached poetry, a hallmark of future traditions), and a "Lord of Misrule" (King of Saturnalia) was selected by ballot to be in charge of the party... So, bittersweetly, happy family gatherings are another possible "reversal" of Saturnalia that carries forward, eh?
  4. Adding for future reference: A good series here: https://www.youtube.com/user/OpenBookAudio/videos
  5. “Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?” ― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy More quotes here: https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/atheism
  6. The expected return from a scientist is much greater than that of a busboy.
  7. I'm running Utopic on a 32-bit only Intel box I have here, but I upgraded, I did not install fresh. I have not looked into the images recently, but often when you are dealing with really old hardware, you may have to modify the image to load hal (hardware abstraction layer), which we avoid putting in like the plague because it's spaghetti, but it's where the support for really old stuff is. Utopic is based on a modern kernel and udev, which should cover anything made in the last 6 years, but when you get really old, you might need proprietary stuff. If you cut a CD instead of USB boot you might have better luck.
  8. You avoided all the secular parts of Christmas with your actions, so, yeah, you are being a Grinch. You can enjoy the party in the spirit it was intended... to plea to the sky ghosts to being spring and summer and food and warmth and access to eggs!
  9. I totally get that. I find this page to be good about identifying the difference: http://unschoolers.org/peaceful-parenting/identifying-underlying-needs/ As a first salvo against this sort of argument, try saying, "Peaceful parents work to understand underlying needs instead of treating symptoms with opposition. It is the disciplinary parents who don't take the time to understand that are neglectful."
  10. I agree that the term should be more neutral, but I think the prevailing notion is negative. Look at this definition from rationalwiki: http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Privilege
  11. At this point I'm lending a lot of credence to Gary Taubes and his premises from Why We Get Fat: we eat too many carbs, exercise only gives temporary results, reduced caloric intake increases cravings, certain diet substances like aspartame increase cravings because they emulate real sugars, stress increases cravings, etc.
  12. What's funny is that I never got nearly as much female attention as when I do whilst in a relationship.
  13. I did spend some time being mindful of my own body language when I was learning to become a public speaker and it made me more likely to notice body language in other people as well. Recognizing people in a meeting that are closed or distracted versus engaged and wanting to contribute helped me direct meetings better... and then I started working from home about 12 years ago.
  14. Ah, it seemed like the most relevant from Gunnoe, however. There's a lot of Gunnoe literature on Google Scholar that's related to the same subject matter, though. I sense a one trick pony.
  15. You may want to look at the other thread about this trailer here: https://board.freedomainradio.com/topic/42760-mew-pixar-movie-inside-out/
  16. Less than 50g of carbs per day and more than 50g of protein per day was where I was doing pretty good. Pretty tough around the holidays... so much good stuff.
  17. You can actually make a pop filter with a pair of pantyhose and make a popsicle stick frame to stretch them over. Don't bother with one until it's clear you need one.
  18. If you can catch the sale, then check out this: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Podcaster That's a screaming good deal on the microphone, but it's a quality mic from Røde. As HordOfTheFlies indicates, though, you'll want a quality microphone stand and perhaps a shock mount unless you have an incredibly stable setup. These days I'm using a headset mic, but I used the good stuff a million years ago when I worked in a recording studio.
  19. This is really "other" knowledge, but it might help to understand the messages you are broadcasting to everyone else... http://www.bakadesuyo.com/2014/12/how-to-read-people/ How To Read People Like Sherlock Holmes: 4 Insights From Research As they say... read the whole thing.

  21. scholar.google.com is your friend ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN PARENTING STYLE, PHYSICAL DISCIPLINE, AND ADJUSTMENT IN ADOLESCENTS' REPORTS Marjorie Lindner Gunnoe Calvin College Read More: http://www.amsciepub.com/doi/abs/10.2466/15.10.49.PR0.112.3.933-975 My reading of this is that children that are beaten fit in better with their peers, but I wonder if that's because they are more likely than not to find beaten children among their peers.
  22. What's your price range? In general, you would be amazed what you can do just by improving the acoustics of your room. I've mentioned some things in another thread before, but it does sound like your noise issues with roommates and laundry should get as much attention as your microphone.

  24. You can answer "that would spoil the surprise" to a number of questions and feel pretty smug. I admit that I have done the white lie in the other direction where I feign a surprise in one direction to cover up a real surprise in another.
