What drives you to live as an atheist?
Jer replied to WontStandForIt's topic in Atheism and Religion
Depressing compared to what? Pretending to know things you don't know seems pretty depressing to me. -

What's Worse, Sports Fanatics or Political Fanatics?
Jer replied to ClearConscience's topic in General Messages
I never understood sports team partisans until I heard the analogy to the state/nationalism. A few years back I had family visiting during the NFL playoffs and their team was playing that Sunday. We were talking about going out for a morning hike and they were insistent that we had to be back in time for kickoff in spite of my suggestion that we can record it on the DVR and skip the first few commercials if we're back later. They said it wasn't the same... I guess they need to feel like their yelling at the TV is doing some good. http://www.fdrpodcasts.com/#/20/the-state-and-sports -

The Married Convert Must Convert At Least One Person
Jer replied to mishochu's topic in General Messages
Have you asked your wife to call in to the show? Does she listen with you and explain why she disagrees? Obviously Stefan is better at explaining this stuff than most of us so instead of trying to articulate the ideas myself sometimes I'll turn on a podcast and we discuss it after. My wife and I used to be Christian and Republican and we're now both skeptical libertarians. I'd recommend Peter Boghossian's book A Manual for Creating Atheists. The book isn't about religion so much as beliefs. You can use the methods he uses to talk a person out of faith in gods and apply them toward faith in the state. Lots of the early podcasts are good too.: http://www.fdrpodcasts.com/#/1/the-stateless-society-an-examination-of-alternatives http://www.fdrpodcasts.com/#/37/what-is-libertarianism http://www.amazon.com/Manual-Creating-Atheists-Peter-Boghossian/dp/1939578094/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1455402039&sr=1-1&keywords=a+manual+for+creating+atheists -
Is there any Mormon doctrine about spanking?

As I understand it you can register as a conscientious objector where you fulfill the legal registration requirement but say you are morally opposed.

Are Libertarians afraid of success?
Jer replied to pnelson's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Penn Jillette said on his podcast that he'll campaign for Hillary if Trump gets the nomination. I don't think people are afraid of winning, but agree that Trump makes people lose their minds.- 43 replies

Swedish State Funds Sniper Training for Refugees (Source)
Jer replied to Crallask's topic in Current Events
Like you mentioned before the theory of shooting a .22 rifle or an Ak-47 is basically the same, so a person like me who can shoot a 1 inch group at 25 yards with a .22 can pick up one of these more efficient weapons and be highly effective with 5 minutes of familiarization. Yes, a small fraction are terrorists, but a large fraction believe it's correct to murder atheists, gays, people who draw Mo, or adulterers among other things. -
Yes, a prostitute is a person who performs services in exchange for money. Slaves are a different thing.

I wish there were a way for me to wager that you have no formal weapons training. A few guys with .22 rifles and tactical training could cause serious mayhem. -
I really don't get the conflict over if they thought the women were prostitutes or traditionally virtuous women. It's a non sequitur imo. You still need consent to touch a hooker.

+1 the idea that the men mistook them for willing goes out the window when they fight back and the men don't stop. There's also evidence the attacks were premeditated.

Why is dropping oil price bad?
Jer replied to Pelafina's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
I think cheap oil is generally good for consumers. This vid notes potential problems Trade deficit is another term I think is a lot less scary than Fox News would have us believe. When the US has a "trade deficit" with China what's actually happening is tangible goods are being manufactured and shipped to the US in exchange for increasingly plentiful US dollars. I think the party getting the real goods is not at a deficit... -
Possibly the Scariest Social Engineering Implications to date
Jer replied to HedgeWizard's topic in Current Events
I'm sure a lot of people reading about this program are saying this would never happen in the US, but US law enforcement already has a similar system where they analyze the social media history of individuals on a massive scale in order to assess a "threat level". They haven't yet taken it to the next level of rewarding statist behavior, but you can bet Americans are already getting discriminated against (or whatever you want to call it) because of their public statements and those of their acquaintances that the state dislikes. -
1 I've never heard of Jim Sinclair. 2 you used manipulative language and name calling where reason and evidence could have been used with fewer words 3 I didn't have a problem with the interview. Right, you don't need to justify anything to me, unless you want to have a friendly conversation...

Do you deny that your original post has manipulative language? You insult proponents of gold by name calling when you could have instead simply stated your objection to the pro gold "advice" with an argument. i.e. People selling gold have missed the fact that (insert logic/evidence here)...
