Roads in a free society - real-world examples
Jer replied to MiraiRonin's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
I was indoctrinated and came to be an atheist after hearing Stefan's arguments. I've also been watching a bunch of these vids lately. https://www.youtube.com/user/magnabosco210 -
Is it Acceptable to Be A Spiritual Person and An Anarchist? Religious?
Jer replied to Very Ape's topic in General Messages
I see you accept that faith is an unreliable epistemology. Do you have any reason besides faith to think there are gods? -
I don't have anxiety beyond the usual fear of uniformed thugs but I am a more kind, empathetic and patient person when I have some (my wife and therapist agree). I assume Mantis is referring to the Nixon study where monkeys were effectively suffocated in smoke for 5 minutes at a time with no oxygen. All that proved is that oxygen deprivation causes brain damage.

+1 to Dsayers' posts. I am confident that being raised in a fundamentalist Christian home was detrimental to my development.

Peter Boghossian disagrees with you. Have you read A Manual for Creating Atheists? I'd recommend it. -
Pornography predates Eugenics by thousands of years and even if it had originated with eugenics that says nothing of the moral content. It's like saying "before you go vegetarian, remember Hitler didn't eat meat"

Comments disabled is a red flag that you're about to get pseudoscience imo. His arguments against porn: 1. It might be taking advantage of a person in a desperate situation. In other words, somebody who really needs a job is getting one. 2. I (Ran, not me) get violent fantasies because all porn is violent or degrading toward women. He has a personal problem and he is mistaken. There is great porn available that is made for couples that has no violence or humiliation toward men or women. Edit: Porn is the one gender gap you never hear feminists talk about. Men get paid like 1/5th as much as their co stars but the women are the ones being exploited.

Ben Carson, Creationist: "Evolution encouraged by Satan"
Jer replied to Alan C.'s topic in Atheism and Religion
I was called crazy by a woman who paid to see Ben Carson speak. -

Is the trial over? Results? If I thought the punishment is unjust I would vote not guilty. I'm also in favor of taking jury duty after watching Doug Stanhope

I don't think so but he does ask her how she'd feel about a son or daughter going into the industry. Puritans and feminists have a lot of non scientific propaganda circulating, be skeptical of unfounded assertions. I used to think porn was immoral because I read it in a book that also claims the world is 6000 years old among other scientific innaccuracies. We have a better (scientific) method of determining truth now.

Do you have any sources? Vid below is an evolutionary psychologist and a porn star who say the "damaged goods" hypothesis is contradicted by data. why the "toward the actress" distinction? Are you saying there's a moral difference between a man getting paid to do porn and a woman?

Study: Binge Drinking Causes $250B in Lost Productivity in US
Jer replied to Alan C.'s topic in Current Events
Is it correct to say lost productivity is a cost? It seems like it wouldn't necessarily follow that stopping excessive drinking would result in fewer sick days. I think maybe it's a faulty assumption that every worker wants to maximize the number of hours worked. Particularly so with people who drink to excess, I'd think they are less likely to enjoy their work and might be taking the max sick days the employer will allow regardless. I guess my point is that drinking wouldn't be the "first cause" of the problem, but rather a symptom. -

Democrats demand new gun-control while surrounded by armed guards
Jer replied to Alan C.'s topic in Current Events
Also saw the disgusting clip of her and Bernie laughing about the idiots that want her to be accountable for her mishandling of sensitive info. Meanwhile actual whistleblowers are being tortured in solitary confinement or forced to seek asylum for exposing crimes. -
Illinois state lotto has been run fradulantly and is giving out IOUs instead of paying winners. Article notes that illegal lotteries were popular even back when the state paid its winners because the state gives worse odds. https://reason.com/blog/2015/10/15/illinois-lottery-now-paying-ious-on-wins Another reminder for our statist friends that monopolies don't magically become virtuous and efficient when run by the state.

I don't watch the debates but saw a clip of some guy from the dem debate making this same point and was flabbergasted. -
Why should I have to choose between a delusional warlord pedophile and a delusional illiterate carpenter to decide what's moral?

The Philosophy of Star Trek Economics
Jer replied to AncapFTW's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Did you watch the video? He brought up some really good questions, one of which you left out of Alan's post when you quoted. Why would anybody sweep the floor? Why would anybody ride a scooter when they could have a starship? Who would build the automated systems and maintain them? -
Everything must have a cause! Oh that's a new one. But but but, what caused God?

The Philosophy of Star Trek Economics
Jer replied to AncapFTW's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
The prequel series "Enterprise" included a few bits of free trade where they needed to get parts for the ship and such. I really enjoyed that they actually had to deal with scarcity for once. -
I believe Stefan talks about claims of divine knowledge and the like in Against the Gods edit: skip to 44:40 for "accidental knowledge" completely irrelevant but I prefer the spelling Koran>>Coran>>>>Qu... The qu spellings are misleading to wrong from a phonetic perspective because there is no "wa" sound like in quake quiver queen.

15K Government workers identified in adultery website hack

Declaring what? What inevitable reveal? I meant that signing up for an account on AM is effectively putting your name in the "people who cheat" database. Also, many of those customers went above the minimum requirements and volunteered their GPS tracking info.
