Are we going about discussing these topics the wrong way?
Jer replied to DataBrain's topic in Atheism and Religion
I have changed my entire approach to talking to theists and statists after watching Anthony's vids and reading Peter Boghossian. Highly recommended. -
All the bitcoin people I follow on twitter said it's not him and compared the Wired story to the Dorian Nakamoto Newsweek debacle in terms of poor level of research. They even say something along the lines of "if he's not Satoshi, he really wants us to think he is" If Satoshi really wants to reveal his identity there are easy ways for him/her/them to do so that would leave little doubt. The fact that this guy's house got raided by the cops already leads me to think Satoshi will choose to remain anonymous for a long time.

No, that would not be reasonable. I'm just talking about politeness. If someone says "call me Steff" and you call him "Steve" you are just a jerk.

What evidence do you use to conclude that something is divine?

Calling all Red Flags for guys to watch out for!
Jer replied to kavih's topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
Lots of women I've known are chronically late. It is a pet peeve of mine and I think symptomatic of a lack of empathy. -
I would still reasonably call your "Moslem" classmate whatever they ask to be called. If I meet some guy and he says "call me Jack" I'm not going to call him Jock, that would be rude. My point is that the standard pronunciation is more "moose" than "maws" and there are linguistic rules which explain why.

He was grammatically incorrect according to Modern Standard Arabic

Yes, if that's what they call it there. I've never liked giving a place a different name than what it's called locally, but that's two different words with different pronunciations and a different topic. You're just intentionally mispronouncing (to mock presumably). There are enough bad ideas in religion that we don't need to stoop to that level to find something to criticize.

Aye, I found the School Sucks Podcast very enlightening on the origins of public schooling and would recommend it to any current or future parent not familiar with the history of the Prussian school system. this is an excerpt from John Taylor Gatto's book, The Underground History of American Education. One of my favorite videos to share.

I down voted this because you started the thread with Jesus in the title and then claimed to not have brought up gods.

if by sympathizer you mean "speaker of Arabic", then yes that's how a sympathizer pronounces it.

My thoughts on the gay marriage thing
Jer replied to Good man's topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
I'm not suggesting it improves chances of success more than a wedding ceremony in a church or whatever. It's just a public record of their contract which could be enforced by a DRO if desired.- 45 replies

My thoughts on the gay marriage thing
Jer replied to Good man's topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
The Blockchain bro https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/bitcoin-wedding-marriage-on-the-blockchain/ All hail the great Blockchain! Stefan has made very good arguments for marriage in a free society as a public commitment beneficial to children. As a linguist I'd predict that the fact that you don't need a license to marry in a free society will not cause the word "marry" to fall out of use just because it's more convenient to keep it.- 45 replies

Sorry to hear about your hardship. Have you tried a vaporizer? I almost never smoke because I feel much slower and get headaches. Also, fitness and cannabis are not mutually exclusive. I don't mean to tell you not to quit, just that you don't have to stop before you start exercising and dieting. That's great that you enjoyed the hike so much, keep at it.

I'm not the one bringing up Jesus... My question "what's the point?" is asking what benefit is there to this information you are sharing? If I string the right sequence of dual words together could I feed 5000 people with a meal intended for 5?

What is the point? It just looks like a bunch of Chopra style deepities to me. Do you believe in gods?

Gmail's AI identified Bernie campaign promises as fraudulent and they have apologized for the "error". “Be careful with this message. It contains content that’s typically used to steal personal information,” Gmail said in a bright red warning box that appeared at the top of a message sent by Mr. Sanders’ campaign Friday, laying out his “Agenda for Working Families.” http://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/nov/25/google-deems-bernie-sanders-economic-plan-phishing/

To Continue confronting and offering the Light reason to parents or not?
Jer replied to Anuojat's topic in Self Knowledge
Screw the rules. I found these podcasts very helpful. RTR is great, but it's not a courtesy you need to extend to everyone. I have limited contact with my parents and it's on my terms. My mom just figured out that I changed my phone number and didn't give her the new one when I didn't respond to a mass text where she was again trying to play matchmaker and get me to have a conversation with my evil scumbag abusive brother who refuses to make restitution for stealing from me twice. http://www.fdrpodcasts.com/#/963/screw-the-rules-part-1 http://www.fdrpodcasts.com/#/964/screw-the-rules-part-2 -
Getting to the Truth - is logic & reason the only way??
Jer replied to Pelafina's topic in Philosophy
Peter Boghossian has written extensively on methods for getting to truth. -
I use after workouts since I think I lose a small amount of power. I think it helps me with pain relief for sure, also helps me eat more and sleep better. Do you notice any strength difference if you have cannabis before workouts? I have heard people say it helps with endurance too, but the only thing I noticed on that front is I am able to go longer without getting bored. Climbing Mag sent a survey on cannabis to a bunch of pro climbers http://www.climbing.com/blog/pro-climber-marijuana-survey/

Do you think if these entire cultures weren't indoctrinated to believe the Islamic scripture from childhood but instead taught UPB, logic, reason and critical thinking skills that they would have the same amount of extremists?

Are you saying there isn't violence encouraged or commanded by Allah in the Islamic scripture?
