Is structural misogyny another word for patriarchy? Also, nerds were never on my list of people observed to live with privilege, but....I guess....I was wrong?

Scientific team believes sugar source of disease

Regarding the "correlation is not causation" comments I often see thrown about... If you read study methodologies and the author's analysis of their results; they will often have a short section on why they accept the expected results, and then a huge section on why their data are/could be flawed. Any study that does not provide a data analysis which includes this, is, in my professional opinion, proving their biases simply by omission. Over the years I've come to think that any form of stats and numbers used to make a point are highly suspect and worth scrutiny because the conclusions drawn through which ever methodology chosen can influence the outcome, yes even in the empirical sciences. It's one thing to be a systematic scientist, it's another to apply blind faith in the act of scientism. The latter said in regard to taking these studies at face value...and then tossing out the conclusion- because "correlation is not causation". Oldest dismissal in the book it seems to be, and if your dismissals are going to hold up against the people who blindly agree, they could be based on a more in depth analysis which addresses flaws in their actual methods and means of data collection. The doctor in that video linked above does a pretty good job at outlining the biochemistry behind how they elucidated that fructose is a poison to the liver and why livers become fat. I say this as someone who has studied biochem, chemistry and some topics in toxicology, but haven't verified what's presented in that video by fact-checking and doing homework on it. He breaks it down somewhere in there, and I don't have any textbooks that I can use to verify it, however, the presentation is compelling. (That's my disclaimer, I suppose.) -
Hey Brentb! From your post above... "The environmental benefits of a green roof over a cool roof are negligible if any. I don't see any purpose for a green roof beyond aesthetics, or if someone wants a penthouse with a garden." Can you tell me how you reached this conclusion? I am curious about the evidence that you have seen that would support a lack of environmental benefits. Also, do you mean that morally, the choice to utilize green roofs or cool roofs is just an aesthetic one? Or, do you mean perhaps that people who make this choice base it simply on whether they prefer one look to another, and no other factors (such as the energy savings and resource capturing/producing potential)? Thanks, in advance. Regards, SueBee

Mediating in family trauma: Recipe for disaster
SueBee replied to wizzzardry's topic in Self Knowledge
If I understand correctly, your cousin's mother (your aunt by law) does not want her son to see his biological father. Your Uncle cannot communicate the reason to his own son. And his ex won't say, but instead chooses to lie. I am hesitant to ask, but want to know if the reason involves abuse, or people trying to manipulate one another in this family.- 12 replies

Sustainability involves consideration of the ecological, economic and societal impacts of activities humans initiate. (Just to jump in here...) The greatest benefit imo of green roofs is the improved food security, when indigenous food bearing plants are utilised in the greenroof design.

Hey Edmontonians- Want to be a part of an in-person Q n A session about bitcoin? Then why not join the FDR Edmonton Meetup group, and assist with picking a date and time on- either September 3 or 4, 2014; for a coffee-house bitcoin-focused discussion. For those interested, there will be an opportunity to hear about the applications and use of bitcoin. It will be a meetup session to look forward to! Regards, Sue

I don't think it was recorded however, it is something to look into. The link to the hangout will be posted here once it gets going. I think there is a limit of ten participants per session though....so we may want to do a sign-up / head count. Otherwise, it may end up being "first come, first served".

Hi all, Just a follow up note from our conversation on entrepreneurship earlier ... With regard to sales, a traditional approach is to use the "DRIVE" acronym for guidance: Direction, Rapport, Inquiry, Value, Execution. So...direction is preparing well before approaching clients, knowing as much as you can about your prospects, the industry (etc.) and how your product or service can help solve problems. Rapport is defined as the introduction of yourself, apparently (my emphasis!) making "small talk", building trust (likely/presumably through repeated contact, visits or by reputation), and "setting the agenda" - so, making sure you discuss your value proposition in the sales call or meeting. The inquiry portion lists the situation (current facts and data), the problem (any problems with the current situation), the implication (what happens if you don't fix this/those problems), and the "Need Payoff" which is defined as the solution question to need (not product). Value involves the acknowledgement of customers' need and showing that you understand and respect the customer's point of view. Describing relevant features and benefits (which is the basis of marketing in many ways); and finally, checking for the acceptance of this value proposition as being accurate (my emphasis). Finally, the execution of the DRIVE process involves watching for buying signals (not sure how those are defined exactly...), summarising the points of agreement, then suggesting the next steps of Your sales process / next action items and...(drumroll)...Asking for their commitment to buy. Of course...along the way, there will be Detours - Probe to understand why, Acknowledge the customer's concerns, Respond appropriately based on the concerns. Some common features of the detours are: skepticism, misunderstanding, and drawbacks. To address the detour you can provide the relevant proof based on what customers are skeptical about, demonstrate that your product does in fact meet their needs, and that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. If there is a Price related drawback, re-emphasize the value of the product and how it could help the company or individual achieve the needs you have uncovered in your sales consultation(s) with them. Show that you listen to their concerns, and that you provide solutions. "Check for acceptance" is the final note. That's all. The source is the JR Shaw School of Business, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. I hope that is helpful. Please let me know if this was applicable to you or not. I'm interested in discussing different kinds of market strategies here in responses, or on another thread, just post a link if you start a new one. Thanks!

For mobiles, the free "Twilight" app is something I think works great as far as the ability to control the output of the screen.

That sounds great - I will check for the link to the hangout and join in if I can make it. Cheers!

Hi - JakeN... I was wondering... if you are going to write a business plan, whether you'd consider the potential of your business to be able to grow from a weekend event to a more frequent or weekday event (presuming markets are weekends only)? Would it be possible that you could rent out some counter space through local restaurants, and/or create weekday specials for busy office workers (eg. target market) ..maybe some kind of deal where you could juice up stuff and drop it off to people during coffee-break times so that instead of coffee your clients could have your freshly juiced drinks? You could have a roving mobile juice truck...perhaps. And an app that could allow people to order fresh juice based on what's available by the seasonality & availability. Being an entrepreneur opens up many posibilities! Best of luck.

Is there two different ways to access the meetups online (through the Meetup channels)? I went to meetup.com and searched for the meetup that is happening in my area and found no results.

To answer your query from earlier, Kevin Beal, I was listening to some other podcasts and alt-media shows on the web where Stefan was guest-hosting. I started downloading some podcasts to listen to on my mobile phone while taking the bus. Now I enjoy being part of the dialogue here, as opposed to "just" a listener. [in the near future, I am hoping to be able to 'donate' some time towards FDR Research topics...]

My advice for cutting down your food bill is to cut out the meat substitutes. They are "food-like products" and loaded with sodium, among other things! Feel free to message me for food/recipe ideas. I am also interested to hear about any challenges with choosing to avoid dairy.

After reading your post above, LanceD, I was wondering ...Did you uncover if that behavior had a cause, or based on your experience of this family, and the subsequent discovery, did it seem like the boys' behaviour with regard to the kittens was somehow spontaneous? -
Hey - yeah more familiar with those topics than others...though my intention is to learn more! Cya round Also, what is this "Anti-fragile system"?

Hi FDR folks, Just a bit of random info... Theories of philosophy and economics are new for me, so I am learning a lot here. I really enjoy having conversations about the interface of ideas and ideals, and what is practical and realistic. I hadn't used a chat room since the earlier days of IRC in the late '90s... soooo, at one point I had to ask the room what "afk" meant! I've been inspired and motivated to get more involved and get to know the people in the community. I am glad to be a part of it, and would like to contribute more when I can. TTY soon! SueBee

Is Pop Music just reflecting back what people want to hear ... as opposed to something Beyonce is railing against? I suspect it's just another girl power type song. Saying - hints at what cultural problems are for her fans perhaps, so the greatest number of people identify with the lyrics / message. Seems fairly typical for a susperstar who can never have a normal life again, maybe she has some regrets about what she did to herself to be "goodlooking" and famous?

I think one of the important things that has been highlighted by the call-in show is the degree to which people can become desensitized to abuse and continue to blame the victim afterwards. Bringing the typically unspeakable issues people deal with to the forefront of a conversation and helping people to understand each other and themselves is more than good. Thanks for doing the work to make this happen!
