Philosophy makes me unhappy. I can no longer justify it.
EuanM replied to utopian's topic in Philosophy
Well if you don't mind me asking, how long have you been studying philosophy; I mean really study it closely, not just as a passing interest (Particularity as it's done at FDR) I ask because I'v been pursuing Philosophy pretty intensely for almost three years now, and I can certainly testify that its gradually making me a lot happier, but that's over a fairly lengthy period of time and I'm still not the finished article yet. So what kind of a time-frame are we talking about here? -

I'm familiar with Love Prevails already. - We're friends of Facebook, but you need more that two people for a meetup.

Are there any other FDR listeners in Scotland? Particularly Glasgow? If so we should organize a get-together sometime.

This post reads like a cry for help. utopian, if this is the way you feel about things you could have just stopped posting and quietly disengaged from here; with that in mind, you must understand the flaws in what you are saying at some level. That's true, but you need to understand the truth as a precondition to happiness - that's why what he's saying is so messed up. The truth sets you free - first it makes you miserable, then it sets you free. You post this (the whole thing must have taken a while to type up) knowing full well that *everyone* on here will disagree with it and seek to persuade you otherwise. Who are you trying to convince of what here? All 100% true, and he must realize this at some level, otherwise he wouldn't be posting all this. -

FDR's Most Memorable Videos (Subjective)
EuanM replied to Canoe_Captain's topic in Freedomain Show Lists
478 - Freedom from the fears of others. For me, it felt like a great weight I'd been carrying, that I'd gotten used to and forgotten about, suddenly being lifted - wonderful! I still go back to watch it from time to time. -
Well FDR is a free domain, there is freedom here and the show is about freedom. The words Freedom and domain end and begin in dom respectively, so that syllable links the two words. It's less of a mouthful that 'Freedom Domain Radio'. I always thought it was quite clever.

Should I be happy that my peers at school hate me?
EuanM replied to Inner Horizon's topic in Education
Probably best to go for the latter - enlightenment happens one person at a time, trying to make an entire school grade uncomfortable just sounds like it would likely cause you a lot of unnecessary (and more importantly, unhelpful) aggravation. I suggest that the best way to proceed, both at school and thereafter, is to quietly go about identifying the few people that you can engage with meaningfully; unnerving an entire social circle isn't likely to achieve much in terms of either connecting with people, or enlightening them. Depending on the context it *might* have some entertainment value, but that's about it. Have you listened to podcast 478? If not, I think you might find it helpful. -
An interesting question. I would describe a Neoconservative as a Right Wing statist (a Progressive being a Left Wing statist). It's a big topic, so if you want me to chat about it at more length I can, but here's some material on it. BTW, I don't necessarily agree with everything in these links, especially not the second, but I think they're both informative never the less and worth watching if your interested in the subject.
-
What do you mean by that? Do you mean you mean you'v read books about communicating, or that you'v plugged or given books to people? If it's the latter then which ones?

I believe Leonard Peikoff's 'History of Philosophy' lecture series would interest you. http://campus.aynrand.org/classroom/22/ I also suggest the book 'The Cave and the Light: Plato Versus Aristotle, and the Struggle for the Soul of Western Civilization' by Arthur Herman - although I haven't read it myself yet, I hear it's very good (it's on my pile) http://www.amazon.com/Cave-Light-Aristotle-Struggle-Civilization/dp/0553385666/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1448034057&sr=8-1&keywords=arthur+herman

Just caught my step-father using violence against my step-sister.
EuanM replied to Archimedes's topic in Self Knowledge
I wouldn't worry about what your Mum thinks, but seeing as your sister is the aggrieved against party here I don't think it's a good idea to contact the police against her wishes. (particularly when you consider the quality of protection you are likely to receive from that quarter) But if your stepfather ever assaults you that is a different story. I'm sorry, my last post was made redundant right before I posted it. You'v told your stepfather several times that he can't order you around. However based on what you'v told us in seems to me that he *can* order you around; he has no moral justification to do so, but at a practical level it is within his power to do so. It seems to me that as long as you are living in this place that you have no choice but to obey his wishes, unless he's physically aggressing against you or one of your sisters. Speaking as someone who had a stepfather I didn't get along with either (although what I had to deal with was nothing like this) I understand that that will be an extremely bitter, humiliating pill to swallow, but it might be the only way to avoid being assaulted. Obviously you should continue to lean on your Mom as hard as possible to alter your living arrangements as soon as possible. It is a good thing that you told her that you don't feel safe anymore, because your not. -
Here's a monograph, unrugged individualism by David Kelley of the Atlas Society, about benevolence and why it's in our interests to respect and be kind to others. I think it's a great little resource and so thought i'd share; I hope others will find it to be of value as I have. http://atlassociety.org/sites/default/files/Unrugged_Ind.pd

In that case I strongly recommend 'Creature'.

Economic and Social History (ESH). So far as recommendations are concerned it depends precisely what you mean. If your looking for the sort of stuff that they recommend for reading material then I could pass along my reading list. If you mean stuff that I would recommend on the subject then yes, I 'v got loads of recommendations. Of hand 'The Creature From Jekyll Island' by G Edward Griffin and 'For Good and Evil' by Charles Adams both come to mind. http://www.amazon.com/dp/091298645X http://www.c-span.org/video/?40556-1/book-discussion-good-evil-impact-taxes http://www.amazon.com/dp/1568332351/ If you want more recommendations then name the subject and I'll see what I can do. Are you studying history as well?
