When I click it, I get a menu, but it doesn't seem to have any ip.board content.

Suggestion: remove sharing options for premium content
JamesP replied to Kevin Beal's topic in Technical Issues
Even if they're enormous, or vague, stick 'em in there. If they're enormous, I can always split it into multiple "tickets". If it's vague, that's still a good place to hash out the details. -

That's what the Issues app is for -
This is a really interesting idea... I can see something like, linking your Meetup sign-in to the boards, and possibly importing the Meetup Everywhere map on its own page or something... though I'm not really sure what else we'd do at the moment with that.

Suggestion: in-page podcast player for premium content
JamesP replied to Kevin Beal's topic in Technical Issues
You've got to shoehorn it in to the template a bit... perhaps you could come up with a jPlayer version that I can stick in there? jQuery 1.7 is what's loaded on this site. I need to know what files to download (they should be located in /public/jplayer/), and if you can give me a code block that references a mp3 file, hopefully that will be enough to fix the odd issues we're seeing with jwplayer. I have heard one or two other reports that podcasts stop downloading before they're complete, though, so it might not be an issue with the player. It might then be worth opening a bug with ip.board or something. -

That one was easy! -
Suggestion: Increasing/Eliminating Chat Room Character Limit
JamesP replied to 222's topic in Technical Issues
This is one of those things that I would request that you try to get accustomed to. There isn't a setting somewhere that I can just modify to change the character limit, so that means changing code. Surely it would be more conversational to speak in sentences in a chat setting? -
Make them separate so we can close the issues/suggestions as they get resolved. I can always split/merge suggestions if necessary, but err on the side of atomic rather than monolithic.

Line Spacing Between Paragraphs Not Showing Up on Old Posts
JamesP replied to STer's topic in Technical Issues
Thanks, but this one I don't think I can fix without modifying a lot of data in old posts or screwing things up in the new posts on the board. -
When somebody fails to grasp something so basic as the burden of proof, it indicates a very broken brain. A FAQ is probably not going to help them, though having access to one may help people break their own repetitive cycles of engaging with those who cannot think. In short, if somebody demonstrates that they cannot or do not want to think, it's best to just move on.

I think you see the sort of functionality you describe in knowledge bases. I don't think I like that idea for this board as people make posts on personal topics. A technical means of dismissing a new thread in this way would not benefit that sort of post. Another reason I'm not a huge fan of this is that, based on my observations, either somebody has tried to search and hasn't found that information, or they haven't tried to search and wouldn't give two flying figs if somebody else has already asked that question.

One reason for this might be that "Meetup Everywhere" is for groups that span over a large area but are specific to that group. It's for interest in the group itself, whereas interest categories on meetup.com's regular site are usually (but not always, of course) about a set of ideas independent of a given group. At least, that's my best stab at the idea. It's up to the group who has a Meetup Everywhere presence to promote it, which is done on the Community page off of the main site, as well as in my signature.

I think a FAQ is a pretty good idea, but it seems that most of the people who start and perpetuate these threads don't actually take the time to process these arguments. The presence of a FAQ would probably reduce the degree to which people engage with the people who starts these kinds of threads... though they could also do a search on other relevant threads and link to them here as well.

Reputation is currently limited to donators. At some point, you may have the option to screen posts made by people with low reputations, but right now this only applies to the votes on a given post. This is definitely still in the "see how it goes" phase. I've been wanting some sort of rep or karma system for some time now, and I'm curious to see how the board community will do when people have the tools to police it themselves.

Greetings all! I've encountered a bug in the product that I figured I create a thread for. I don't yet have a fix for it, but you can see what the error looks like in the attachment. I've been digging around for a bit for the one that I ran across, but basically, if you see any of these errors, please add them to this thread by giving me the address and the time you saw the error. This may also be occurring during registration; hopefully, it's the same issue.
-
Please go a-googlin' for how to grab a screenshot if/when you hit this error again, thanks!
-
Can you provide a screenshot, as well as the platform (windows, mac, phone) and browser you're using?
-
Yes, some of the forums and sections have been reorganized and/or merged. MMD can give a little more color on what went where.

This is because the Freedomain Radio meetups are a separate function of meetup.com called Meetup Everywhere. This is not under our control. You would have to find ways to advertise your local group such as posting here, on Facebook, etc. You can also create a local group and put "Freedomain Radio" as one of the interests.

I already implemented something. Please let me know if you have any issues. I'm currently aware of an issue with the iPad. -
Suggestion: in-page podcast player for premium content
JamesP replied to Kevin Beal's topic in Technical Issues
This is done. (There weren't any existing plugins... to get this done, I had to write a small hook to get the MIME type out of the database, then put jwplayer in there so that it would only load for mp3 files!) -
Right, so the old board automatically subscribed you to topics when you replied unless you specifically unchecked the "email" link at the bottom. The new board does not automatically subscribe you to a thread, though you can do that one of two ways: you can click on "More Reply Options" below and make sure "Follow this topic?" is checked, or you can click "Follow this topic" near the top-right of the page in the main view of the topic. You can also change the setting in your profile, by clicking on "My Settings" and "Notification Options," select "Auto follow topics I reply to," changing "Notification Frequency" to something other than "None." I personally do not want email notifications so this level of flexibility is very nice [Added] Oh wait, I misunderstood you then... that I don't know. I suspect that the software doesn't see notifying you of your own posts as a thing to do. Most of these things weren't conscious decisions of changes to be made, just differences in the way the old software works compared with the new.
