I think we should let this thread die a peaceful death again. Some people really like the idea of adding reasons to the rep system but I can tell you that this is non-trivial and is very likely to increase the administrative burden. I'm somewhat neutral on making reputation votes public but I am rather put off by the odd accusations of cowardice and irresponsibility. What would make the boards better is not technology. It is people calling each other out on their bad behavior. The reputation system is a tool to that end. And, sure, like any other tool, it can be abused. That is the main reason the tool is limited to donators. This doesn't guarantee that those who donate won't be jerks in their voting, but rarely does jerky behavior come in only one form. Somebody unphilosophical and broken-brained who has donated and then gets triggered (without curiosity as to their trigger) will likely cancel their donations after the tide of opinion turns against them... and this is how it should be. We don't want jerks to say that they like Freedomain Radio.

Philosophy isn't about alleviating discomfort. It's about seeking the truth. If I am "a part of rape culture" because I am male, well, that's really just the invention of sin, isn't it? There really isn't anything I can do to not be part of rape culture. I can only be slightly less a part of rape culture. According to this feminist, I am, by nature, "rapey." "You're not a rapist, necessarily." Oh, is it the adverb that turns it from a terrible accusation into being generous towards men? The person who posted the article didn't have to call Wanha a rapist, because the article did it for her, and she clearly approves of the article. Oh, wait, sorry, the article almost calls all men rapists. How is that any better? That's not philosophy. That's just people being terrible human beings.

The morality of human shields and dealing with hostile borders
JamesP replied to mreyallior's topic in General Messages
Your amendment does not reflect the power disparity between the two. I also pointed this out immediately after the part you quoted. This is why I chose parent and child (which is certainly a greater power disparity by far). Siblings are far more equal in power, which doesn't map to Israel vs. the Palestinians.- 131 replies

The morality of human shields and dealing with hostile borders
JamesP replied to mreyallior's topic in General Messages
If you spank your kids, and you stop because you genuinely realize that you were wrong (not because they got big enough to fight back), it will be difficult. It may even be war, depending how brutal you were. Can you really not expect there to be a violent response when you remove your oppressive boot from their throats? Treat them as human beings. Israel is clearly the more powerful in this multi-generational war, especially with the backing of US foreign aid. If the Palestinians back down, what's to stop Israel from following through to completion on its genocide? No. Israel must back down. The US foreign aid must stop. Stop enabling abusers. Maybe then they'll have a chance at survival if the tables ever are turned against them. The very title of this topic is dishonest: "The morality of human shields and dealing with hostile borders." You cannot reasonably take the possibility of human shields in isolation. To do so is to treat the Palestinians as hanging off of a flagpole.- 131 replies

"Censor" is quite inflammatory. I don't think the auto-hide feature qualifies. The content isn't removed; you can still see the content if you choose, and certainly many people do, as evidenced by those who continue to engage with auto-hidden users. And you can ignore users. You have to go into your profile to do it, but it's very possible to ignore them. And for Pete's sake, people... you don't get banned for disagreeing. You get banned for being a jerk.
-
It's not been my experience that people who don't have a commitment to good behavior will censor themselves.

That console log is a separate issue; we'll have to contact Mixlr tech support for this particular issue.

[YouTube] The Truth About Israel and Palestine

To battle cancer, the doctor studies the disease from as many angles as he can. -
Oh man, this kind of thing is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to real estate in cities, and probably pretty far down the list in terms of injustices and outrages. I only know enough to say that the amount of government meddling in where you can live and work is nigh on catastrophic.

I created a post in the Technical Issues forum, a sticky titled Reputation System.

The morality of human shields and dealing with hostile borders
JamesP replied to mreyallior's topic in General Messages
mreyallior, stop with the name-calling. The guidelines are at the top of every page of this board. Read them. Also, you said that you weren't going to engage with Waleed, and then two posts later, you engaged with him, and he hadn't even replied to you. If you're going to call somebody else dishonest, you should probably at least make sure that your words and actions are not conflicting.- 131 replies

I was surprised to learn that this forum's posts are public
JamesP replied to jonas-e's topic in Miscellaneous
Could you withdraw your outrage at the board not being private? You had a bad assumption, and I get that this was initially shocking to you, but coming in with a demand to make the entire board private or you won't post... well, I'm frankly inclined to let you stop posting. -
Once freedom is achieved, what else is there to fight for?
JamesP replied to NameName's topic in General Messages
"Once freedom is achieved"? This isn't something you'll see in your lifetime; I don't think you'll have to worry about the "next thing." Also, assuming "freedom" means a voluntary society where the state is to them as slavery is to us, I don't think we can really even know what that will be like. Think about how far ahead we are scientifically from the time of Newton and how much knowledge is available for humans. It would be like that, except to an even greater extent. -
tl;dr - Don't browse the forums while using the chat (or use privacy/incognito mode) until I fix the bug. As you may have experienced, the chat will occasionally stop adding new users and you will not see messages from them. The fix in the moment is to reload, but this can be pretty annoying during a live show when you're using the streamer below the chat window. The technical reason for this is that the information in your browser that the site uses to tell who you are (a cookie) disappears if you open the board in a new tab, or reload the page in a different tab. You can work around this by using the board in a different browser or in privacy/incognito mode, or just waiting until you leave the chat before browsing the board elsewhere. This may simply be a matter of getting the settings Just Right, but this has been a problem for some time now, and now that I know what's causing it, I can at least start looking for how to fix it. I have not yet tested this in other browsers, but I have heard of this being an issue for some time now.

Telling your children who they can play with
JamesP replied to tiepolo's topic in Peaceful Parenting
I thought Stef put this very clearly. You would not let your child play with somebody who has tuberculosis, for example. It's the same thing with a toxic personality. If you are going to raise this as a question, addressing this analogy is pretty important. -
Pushed to prod!

Here ya go, P:

I had this thought pop up while listening to Stef's rebuttal of Will Moyer's Salon article. The war of All Against All is nothing new. The Christian Apocalypse myth that I was exposed to growing up speaks of a war against heaven and hell, in which all would fight against all--brother would fight against brother, children against their parents, war would be universal. Government indoctrination just hooks into this awful, ancient myth with its warning against Anarchy. The only possible difference between myth and indoctrination is that the myth teaches that the War of All Against All is inevitable, while Government purports to be the bulwark against that terrible war. What do you all think?

Save $20,000 on Therapy by Buying a $20 Journal
JamesP replied to MysterionMuffles's topic in Self Knowledge
I'm very sorry, RJ... I did not read the post as it was before, and when I came back to this thread later, I couldn't see it via the link. I've deleted my earlier post (though it can obviously be seen in your quote above). I definitely got triggered by the hook, but the post on your blog is just fine. I've seen so many people trying to say that journaling is "good enough" or that all you really need are good friends instead of going to therapy, but that isn't anywhere in your post. Again, I'm very sorry. -
Pinging Kevin to take a look!

I don't see that in the raw HTML at all... I see the following: <li class='group_icon'> <img src=''><br /> <img src='https://board.freedomainradio.com/public/style_extra/team_icons/fdr_bronze.gif'/></li> Only XHTML needs closing tags. In any case, it's fixed again. Not sure how it came back...
