  1. If one makes a human moral claim then it applies to all humans at all times simply because the human being is fundamentally the same regardless of culture, nation or costume etc. So if I claim that murder is moral then I accept that it is good for me to be murdered. However, the very definition of murder is to not want to be killed. If I want someone to kill me then it's not murder. This is where it fails. I can't want to be murdered and not want to be killed simultaneously. If I make the claim that murder is immoral then it logically and consistently works and the same applies to rape and theft.
  2. Thanks for responding. Yeah, I find that people use the scientific method quite often in every day life. I just wonder if the emotional blockage is the main obstacle in the way of accepting logical consistency.
  3. The old sci fi series Firefly predicted that it would be:)
  4. Nothing short of heroic. I like to think that the woman told the story to a friend who said, "Well, he is right. You wouldn't want to be hit like that."
  5. I recently hosted a show about economical behavior and the experts we talked to said that most people go with the emotional decision over the rational decision every time. This prompted a question. If there were no attachments to psychological security or emotional baggage would UPB be as apparent as math? Of course math comes in many levels of complexity but if given the time and interest would it be accepted as such?
  6. Anyone who genuinely thought this way would never express it. What would be the point? If one says that they can't trust their senses I would ask how did they come to that conclusion and their answer would be by using their senses.
  7. I know that it's easy to say this but remember that family isn't a magic word. You don't owe these people anything and you didn't pick them. When I think of my father as the degrading alcoholic that he was I just see him as any other person with no special power over my emotions.
  8. Well, it wasn't a typical training vid as it was based on a true story. It was more of a "Look how great the FBI is" type film. I'm not sure that a DRO would even have been necessary. If I was the guy in the story I would have told my company that I was being bribed to share secrets and didn't want to breach my contract and that could have been the end of it. Maybe a DRO could put the word out about this shady outfit but I wouldn't participate in a sting operation to get them arrested.
  9. I'm an actor. I recently did a gig for an FBI training film. I played a character that was approached by a foreign company to give secrets to their company in exchange for money. My characters company talks me into cooperating with the FBI on a sting operation. Wrestling with the decision I eventually "do the right thing" and the foreign company is taken down by the FBI. It's actually a really well produced film but I can't help but feel a little slimy. I'm not sure if it's because technically it's a product for the FBI or that the message in the film is always involving your government is the best solution.
  10. As the original poster I just want to be clear that the heading was only meant to be...funny. I thought about it later and it may have come off a bit condescending or sarcastic. I really wanted to explore the article and I thank everyone who did so. Sometimes this stuff gets foggy for me and it's wonderful to see such bright minds shedding light. Cheers.
  11. Indeed we are and thanks for the feedback.
  12. Perhaps I've misunderstood but finding something attractive and better than drugs can't be a very good method of discerning truth.

    Acting?

I've been investigating my motives for the desire to pretend. A safe environment to explore emotions? A chance to receive attention? An attempt to develop understanding for an otherwise foreign personality? My gut reaction is that I get a charge out of fooling people or knowing that I'm causing them to believe something that I know isn't true. This is done usually for humorous effect but it's not unlike a magician doing a trick. There is also a satisfaction in getting lost in a scene while knowing that it's not "real". Any insight on this?
