Why people think total nonsense is really deep
MrCapitalism replied to Alan C.'s topic in Self Knowledge
I disagree. People have been openly discouraged from skepticism and critical analysis, almost their entire lives, by their schools and churches. -
Perhaps your experience of skepticism is similar to possessing the ability to fly. Skepticism has an aspect of observation, of 'watching' others; this might be symbolized by needed to use a watch for flight. You said in the dream this was your first time flying, is there some aspect of your life in which you've recently grown? I think we have a very strong model for dream interpretation, in that nothing is given, and everything in the dream is chosen on purpose from an infinite of possibilities. The key is to answer the question of why the particulars were chosen. It's as if a dream is an internal conversation, with messages communicated through all of the senses.

So....what.....radiation doesn't exist too? -
...A lot of us are anarchists and atheists, I'm pretty sure we know exactly what that lifestyle is like. Again, if these people aren't using force against my body or my property, what do I care what they think? Fundamentally they would giving me more respect than most people give each other in western society. But you chose not to.

At least in California, USA, I can be excused from jury duty because attending subjects me to "undue financial hardship." Basically, if your employer doesn't pay your full salary while you attend jury duty, then you can get them to write a letter to the court stating such, thus attending directly results in a loss of pay. I totally forgot to do this process once and was forced to attend for a day. I was late, and later learned that they had marked me absent, but I spent all day reading Power and Market. When I got the notice that I had no showed, I responded with a formal version of "nuh uh, I wuz there." The matter was settled. Now, I make sure to get that letter.

I suspect that happens every now and then. If the monorail had hit the squirrel between stations there would probably be no way for the public to tell. If they were found out, I think patrons would accept an apology and expression that it was an unavoidable accident. The only way I can see it being a PR problem was if it were somehow revealed that running over the animal was done with malicious intent. I think the driver's decision was excellent from the perspective of the Disney brand image. The passengers certainly agreed and had no problem with the delay. And they got a positive video to go viral.

Study: Binge Drinking Causes $250B in Lost Productivity in US
MrCapitalism replied to Alan C.'s topic in Current Events
I don't agree with the premise of such an article. Binge drinking is a recreational activity, not an act of production. Although it's a stupid and potentially very costly one. It's supposed to cost something, that's the point of doing it. -
A government may have shot down a passenger jet.

I'm inclined to agree with Pendrokar Wikipedia shows the BUK is currently being operated by both Ukraine and Russia, and it appears that the predicted launch area covers both Ukrainian and Russia territory. However, I have a very hard time believing that professional operators from either military would neglect to use equipment to verify that the intended target is indeed enemy. -

The Dutch government was charged with the accident investigation, and it appears they have concluded their report. The attached video goes into great detail on the findings. -
That's because I live in a world in which the making and enforcing of laws is socialized. Laws for, or against abortion, may provide a benefit to society, and their enforcement involves a certain 'social cost.' People freak out about this stuff because they only see the benefit, which they cannot quantify, and are blind to the cost of providing that benefit. My personal opinion is that this stuff is a complete non-issue in a private law society.

How Well Can Red Flags Be Hidden?
MrCapitalism replied to MysterionMuffles's topic in General Messages
If sociopaths are so good at hiding their red flags from women, and women are blind to red flags... then why is there an entire web industry devoted to getting nice guys to wave red flags to get the girl? -
Should I take advantage of the welfare system
MrCapitalism replied to Jakethehuman's topic in General Messages
You're on a philosophy forum (one that isn't favorable to subjectivism), why don't you want to know what the ethics of the situation are? Why would you need to lie about your income when your last post gives the impression that you are in a situation in which you legitimately qualify for welfare? -

MrCapitalism replied to Jakethehuman's topic in General Messages
The guns? I think you make a valid argument but really...you're going to risk prison over this? If you want to of course that's your choice. That's really just extracting even more resources from the state. But i have to imagine you have better things you could be doing. -

Are there better options for you that can satisfy the humanities? Sounds like a waste of time and effort to have to drop out of a class and try and struggle to get your money back. Then you would have to register for another course after it has started and try to catch up. Or, you're just going to extend your education if you wait to do this class later. Is this really that important to your education? Maybe you could consider sticking it out. IMHO this training is much better provided by a logic class. The concepts of argumentation and organization are provided without any "ideas whatsoever" the premises are A,B,C,D etc.. there's nothing for the professor to give a personal opinion on. I also don't agree with the virtue of an "impartial professor," a professor is experienced and knowledgeable, and they're doing a disservice to their student to withhold their opinion when they are being specifically paid to share it. There's no point in being a subject expert if they think their job is to "teach students how to think" which I think evidence shows doesn't even work.
