Are the egalitarians arguments against "privilege" self detonating?
Lars replied to FreedomPhilosophy's topic in Philosophy
I wouldn't mind egalitarianism if it didn't tend to rob certain parties of all responsibility past, present and future. Also there's really no way to get around the fact that different people are "privileged" with different physical and mental capacities. -
Isn't it amusing how Emma believes that society stifles her self-expression because she's a woman? Well done.Let's see somebody address the UN about 'she for he', now that would be a spectacle.

His attempts at managing the audience's response right from the beginning was already irritating, plus I've heard it all before anyway.Animal abuse is a direct result of child abuse, yet these activists apparently couldn't care less about the suffering of their own species, or at least have their priorities messed up. Either way, excessive meat production (economically inefficient) requires large subsidies to be profitable... there's an embarrassingly simple solution, but it may affect the immediate food supply a little.

I stopped listening as soon as he said livestock animals are born to be "murdered".

Wow, Tatiana makes great music. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. -
...although we are vicious toward people who defend child-abuse.

Fat acceptance synonymous with feminism

I remember something interesting which Stef pointed out about how the general perception of physical beauty in any specific time and place encompasses what is rare/difficult to achieve as it relates to the accumulation or possession of resources. It's extremely easy to become obese in these modern times, not terribly flattering, just an over-consumption of cheap abundant sugar combined with inactivity. -
Agnostics value religion over rationality (RANT)

Why must we pretend to know the answer to an impossible question in order to achieve happiness? -
Agnostics value religion over rationality (RANT)
Lars replied to NameName's topic in Atheism and Religion
In an increasingly multicultural and philosophically stagnant society, one should expect the rise of agnosticism. We're biologically programmed to conform (whether it be for survival, favors or companionship) and there's no better scatter-shot 'tolerance is a virtue' ideology. Atheism threatens the fragile bloated social-sphere of a typical agnostic. They have no desire to explore truth as it relates to reality lest lose many 'friends'. -

Stefans' "downright fallacious" arguments?!
Lars replied to Jot's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
For people who don't know, a Fallacy of Composition is like suggesting that all cars are circular because all wheels are circular. I can only guess that they're indirectly affirming 'evil people exist, therefore the Free Market must be regulated' - typical propaganda.Do we, here at FDR, deny the potential existence of human predators? How is the market "as a whole" anything other than a group of individuals making voluntary transactions in a free society? What does it mean to benefit society? Does Stefan support the Free Market from a Utilitarian perspective? How does this have anything to do with whether the State is immoral?I usually don't bother arguing with these assumptive weasels unless it might influence some neutral on-lookers toward reason. -

At any rate, it's important to consider how other people may process what we say regardless of intention. Purposely leaving things ambiguous may be considered passive-aggressive in itself, I'm certainly guilty of that. -

I'm confused, how does full dependency negate individual identity? -
Here's the basic idea as far as I have understood. UPB defines what can only be considered evil using the axiom of self-ownership. If an action violates the Non-Aggression Principle then it is evil. An ethical proposition cannot be considered good if it cannot be universalized. If you wish to be good, then start by not being evil. Most people are morally misguided in this regard, they want to be good yet lack fundamental principles. Others - the human predators - are only able to get away with evil for as long as they remain unidentified. UPB identifies these predators for all to see, there is no sanctuary for evil within this framework. As opposed to mainstream ethics which heavily focuses on defining 'good' based on consequences, preferences and/or ideals, that is to create contextual exceptions and falsely legitimize evil.

That seems to be the case for the modern gaming industry in general, scores are becoming increasingly cinematic/atmospheric due to advances in technology, it tends to sacrifice some of that old-school catchiness where the focus was predominantly melody. There's also that slight issue where someone's creativity goes downhill after about 15 years of active professional work. They are technically masterful, but begin to lose inspiration. It could also be the case that ~15 years experience - both success and failure - lends itself to a solid understanding of your audience's expectations so artists (plus other dependent parties) become averse to the risk-taking necessary for innovation, i.e. there's more at stake and you're already well aware of what has been proven to sell in the past.

Here's some contemporary David Wise (also Kenji Yamamoto). There's a great rendition of Stickerbrush Symphony from DKC2 at about 3:30.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFIQI1yT838

An atheist who converts to religion was never a proper (principled) atheist to begin with.

Misguided is a better word rather than foolish, I agree.I was under the impression that 'friend-zoning' implies no sexual activity, so it must be defined differently when a man does it to a woman. So when a man friend-zones a woman he is taking advantage of her sexually, but refusing to provide the time and resources she naturally desires in return (requires an insecure woman to stick around). Sounds like typical alpha behavior... ironic?I'm still not sure whether to call that "friend-zoning" though. Also, regarding the video Kevin linked, it's a good example of the disconnected/narcissistic thought process of good-looking women due to rarely being called out on their bullshit. All the people included in the video were quite attractive in general, just an observation. I wonder how the answers would compare with less attractive individuals. -

Yes, friend-zoning typically occurs due to a lack of direct assertion even though it's pretty damn obvious when somebody has affection for you.Young women tend to friend-zone multiple infatuated guys in order to extract as much male utility/resources as possible to compensate for the useless alphas they might be banging or looking for.- A man is foolish for being strung along without any meaningful reciprocation.- A woman is heartless for taking advantage of an unassertive man's feelings. It doesn't seem possible for a man to 'friend-zone' a woman, since women usually perceive a lack of sexual attention as automatically insulting and men don't really have anything to gain from a lady they deem unattractive.I used to have a massive crush on some scatter-brain girl, an incredibly charming person who appeared to be a good friend, although it took me a while to realize how deceptive and manipulative she was. Turns out that I was just a little contextual pawn selected from her vast collection of equally disposable acquaintances (thousands). I won't be surprised if she ends up as a politician, how ironic. -

Since panic attacks cause my heart to beat more noticeably (I have a distinct aversion to heart beats), it escalates toward a feeling of frantic faintness, hyperventilation, trembling deathly numbness as if I'm losing blood flow throughout my whole body, including facial muscles, so it becomes difficult to speak. The best course of action is to relax before it gets worse. At one point I needed someone to hold my icy-cold hand before it stopped. The first time I experienced it was seemingly out of nowhere in a university ethics class, caused a bit of a scene.Similar experiences?

Anybody here have experience with Internet/gaming addiction rehab?
Lars replied to MeGrownMind's topic in Self Knowledge
I can relate with everything you've said, yeah, the repetitive magnetism of regretful time-wasters provoked by anxiety. Dr. Warren Farrell briefly addressed gaming addiction in boys here, I found it interesting, a bit scary too. Just remember that every time you pick up a controller instead of doing something productive toward your goals it's further ensuring that you will make the same decision in the future.Therapy is usually the best thing we can do for ourselves when we're psychologically stuck in the dregs of history, especially if still surrounded by people who nurtured the behavior in the first place.I suggest you take active measures to stifle the temptation of gaming like uninstalling everything, getting other people to hide necessary hardware, etc. That's something to consider (if you haven't already) before looking at more drastic rehabilitation options.Hopefully your sleeping habits aren't as bad as mine, I'm still working on fixing that. The late-night glow of a computer monitor actually screws with our internal clock.
