All it makes clear is that people would get killed for not being religious. What do you know? Everyone seems to claim they are religious! Must add some credibility to the case that people say they believe things when under duress.

Hello and welcome! I was not present for the live call-in show and I don't think that show was released on YT yet (of course, I may have missed it). I was wondering if you could tell a little about yourself, who you are, why you are here, how you found FDR, etc. I am curious to know a little bit about you.

A couple of us in chat were talking and we think it would be awesome if there was a way to link not just to a podcast, but to a specific time-mark in the podcast. It would allow for easier quoting and referencing, and especially for call-in shows where highly diverse subjects could occur in the same podcast but minutes or hours apart.

Hangout and chat while playing boardgames (online)
Wesley replied to TheRobin's topic in Miscellaneous
I created an account last night (as I think I might be the other board gamer your described ) I actually haven't played most of the games on there surprisingly, though I have heard of several of them. I am interested to try it out sometime. -

How do you know? I went to school for engineering, because my parents told me it was important for my future. They didn't want me to go to school for anything to do with me. They wanted the prestige of having raised college graduates. As far as if you should continue going to school, that is up to you. I am not saying that it might not be beneficial, as I have no idea. However, I would think graphic design you would learn a ton more by going out there and doing graphic design. I also do not know if you would need a "job" in order to do graphic design. You could start a business and just go do it. Obviously, I would defer to you as you have done far more research than I as to what is best, but those are just my thoughts.

Mental illness and personality disorders - An excuse for bad parenting?
Wesley replied to tjt's topic in Peaceful Parenting
I would first like to say that I am not an expert on mental illness or anything like that, so obviously these are just my opinions. Second, Thomas Szasz wrote a book called The Myth of Mental Illness which called into question that entire idea. Stef did a couple presentations on his ideas that might be easier to go through than the book. Third, you first need to work on empathizing with yourself. Fundamentally it does not matter why it happened, only that it happened and that as a child (and now) you feel X because of that. You need to be able to know how you felt and why you felt that way and empathize with yourself. I would not worry about him or why he did it or anything until you truly can process your childhood feelings in a therapeutic process. Finally, I am really sorry that you went through those experiences. I also had a very controlling father with anxieties about many things that he felt he needed to control through yelling into compliance. It can be very scary and nearly impossible to find that perfect path by which you don't step on a landmine of verbal or physical aggression. You should not have experienced that, and I am sorry that you did. -

I also have a minor concern that gay parents of a girl would likely need to make extra effort to have good female role models in their child's life and lesbian parents of a boy would probably need to work to have good male role models in their child's life. Not that this wouldn't be something that should be worked on with any child, I think it might be more important in those situations. Of course, this is just me postulating and might not be an issue at all, but I know that as a boy I would have liked to have more positive male role models in my life and not as many women, which could be more difficult to achieve if both my parents were female, all my teachers were female, etc. Otherwise, I also agree with the others that there are far more important and meaningful factors that go into a child's development like empathy and negotiation and the absence of abuse and more that have nothing to do with parental sexuality. If someone can accomplish those things well, then they are 99% there and the last 1% won't have a large effect.

Nice work, man. I also have gained respect for you after that post.

Parenting is something you do continuously over years and has just about nothing to do with the instantaneous moments of sex or birth. At least, that is how I look at it.

re·li·gion riˈlijən/ noun noun: religion the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. or a particular system of faith and worship. I am not sure how atheism can fit into these definitions. This is an attempt to marginalize reason by calling it just another form of crazy, and therefore it is able to be disregarded in the same way that all other religions are (except their own personal favorite). I generally do not waste time by responding to this, but if I did, it would be to ask what their definition of religion is.

My Philosophical Online Dating Checklist - It's long
Wesley replied to Canoe_Captain's topic in Miscellaneous
For anyone interested in what a genuine smile is vs a masking smile, it come down to the eyes: Just for curiosity, is there a certain number of things they need? Like if they have everything else on the checklist but they don't have pictures outdoors and they have second ear piercings does that disqualify them? I am curious where that line is.- 14 replies

Its no problem. It would be especially hard to search if you were no aware of the term.

There have been many debates previously on the boards and in podcasts about determinism vs free will that are around this topic that you might be interested in reading or listening to. It has somewhat been pounded to death and is at best a discouraged topic. However, I am very interested in your reaction to this idea in that you felt sad. I would be interested to hear more about what you felt and why you think you felt that way. Having a strong emotional reaction to an idea is a great opportunity for self knowledge and growth.

A Possible Donation Model For Stef's Youtube Subscribers
Wesley replied to AnCap AllCaps's topic in General Messages
I think the point that Stef has recently brought up sure had something to do with a pitch about why donating to the show was a good things to do, but the main point to me was to bring to light the series of statements: "FDR changed my life for the better, but I choose not to reciprocate in any way." "FDR completely changed my life, I now am 1,000x better than I was, so here is $2." "I have listened to hundreds of hours of podcasts and YouTube videos, and at least a decent amount of entertainment for those hundreds of hours and thought-provoking ideas has come out of it, so here is $2" People spend like $10 for a 2-3 hour movie, so you would think that several times that in podcasts each month would net at least that. It certainly shows some gap in the idea of reciprocity. Within the bounds of what people can afford, of course, people should tend to donate what value the show has to them. All of those examples show a very large amount of value gained from the show in compared to the amount given in exchange. There is not much that is said about the person who stumbles on the show and doesn't donate anything, as the value they have gained is rather small, but people should be aware of a gap in statements like "you saved my life, here is $2". People might agree to "die roll donating" like this, but I would think it would be much better for people to be able to actually evaluate how much value they have gained for the show, and provide some reasonably comparable reciprocity for it, whether it is through donations, sharing of videos, helping Michael out with volunteer tasks, or anything else that would help the show. That is different for everyone, but as far as what I see on the boards and what I hear in the call-in shows, I would think it would be a few notches higher than it currently is at the least. Thus, I would ask you, sumpm1, if you have donated or not (as it looks like you have not) and then to ask yourself why not rather than trying to come up with convoluted ways in which Stef would be satisfied with you not donating. This is much more about the individual and self knowledge than about the actual income of FDR, in my opinion at least. For, if the goal were to maximize the profits of FDR, as was discussed, things could have various changes in content and revenue in order to easily accomplish that. However, maximum profits is not the goal. -
'The Truth about MILK' recommendation
Wesley replied to David Twyman's topic in Reviews & Recommendations
There are some populations that have a specific adaptation to produce lactase (the enzyme that helps break down lactose) into adulthood, which the Dutch have about an 80% prevalence of this adaptation (which I am about 60-70% Dutch blooded). However, I would also agree that most people have mild lactose intolerance and do not know that they do and think that the mildly bad-health state is just a normal experience. In general, I recommend people experiment with their diet and eliminate various common causes of lifestyle disease and things that people commonly have intolerances to one at a time and to see how they feel in response to it. Then to reintroduce in a slow fashion and see if they react more strongly to it. I have done several tests where I don't eat things from 1-2 months and reintroduce in order to discover that I have a problem with it. I now am much healthier than I was. Also, I want to emphasize slow reintroduction. A friend and I went gluten free after we tested and discovered that we reacted very poorly to gluten. After several months of talking about it, this friend finally convinced his mother to try it. She did and felt a lot better but was convinced that it was coincidence. She then binged and had bagels, pancakes, pastries and anything else you could imagine all in a couple hours for breakfast because she had been missing those foods. She ended up in the hospital and was medically diagnosed as having celiac's disease. She spent her whole life reacting to almost every meal in a mild way and just thought that it was a normal experience for people until she experimented. Again, experiment intelligently just in case something adverse happens and be sure to reintroduce in a slow fashion. As far as dairy products go, there is a scale of reaction. Clarified Butter- This is butter that has had all milk proteins removed. If done correctly, even people with severe lactose and casein reactions can add this to their foods for that butter taste. It also stores very well. They sell clarified butter at stores. Butter- This is a mild thing and very few people react to it. It is almost exclusively fat with very little dairy solids mixed in. This would be the next step to try. Kefir, Yogurt, and other fermented dairy- This often is a mild situation as the fermentation and added bacteria can make it easier for people to digest and deal with. Cheese- It is highly dependent on the cheese (half of the cheeses in the store aren't even made from dairy) but in general, it would fit here. Unpasteurized Milk- While full in casein, unpasteurized milk has its own lactase in it (the enzyme which helps break down lactose) and I know of a couple anecdotes where people who are lactose intolerant are ok with drinking unpasteurized milk. Pasteurized Whole Milk- Calcium and other vitamins and minerals are fat-soluble and thus a good amount of fat taken with something that you want the vitamins and minerals from is almost necessary (think adding an olive oil dressing to your salad). This kind of milk has no lactase and a bunch of cassein, but at least has fat to help you absorb the nutrients from the milk. It is likely that many people react negatively to this kind of milk. Pasteurized Skim Milk- There is almost no benefit to drinking this. In fact, the lack of fat in the milk takes fat from the blood stream in order to try to add in the minerals and it will actually demineralize the body of other nutrients eaten during that meal. A study came out with an inverse relationship between calcium consumption and calcium absorption as many of the people who increased their calcium consumption were women who took supplement pills or drank skim milk because their doctor was worried about osteoporosis. In turn, these people were not taking a fat source with their supplement and simply peed out any benefits and lead to them being mineral deficient in other areas. I honestly see no reason to ever drink skim milk and would prefer people to just eat good vegetables with their meals with a healthy fat source in order to get their nutrients, but of course that is my amateur opinion. So, If you try an elimination diet, you should eliminate everything on this list except clarified butter for at least a month (make sure you check your salad dressings and other things). Then, slowly reintroduce step-by-step and document how you look and feel for a couple days after taking each step. There really is no downside to doing a small amount of diet experimentation for a short while to see what happens. -

By that, I meant that they don't say they are evil or fly swastika flags and such. They do evil things and say they are the good guys. -

For sure, with the legendary that causes double deathrattle, creating a deck where you can kill your own minions while that is out is very strong. I was actually envisioning a similar deck that I was planning on putting togther once Naxxramas came out.

Well, they have yearly that is the price of getting 4 of the months in the year for free and they also have a 30-day money back guarantee if you wanted to try something out and see how it was and then ask for a refund. I am planning on setting stuff up this weekend as I have a block of time were I am not doing anything. If I remember, I will put my feedback here.

I also know of people who pop over the counter pain pills like they are candy for mild pains from working out or for minro headaches or want antibiotics that kill all of the good bacteria in their body for things that aren't even bacterial infections.
