I'm deciding on how to handle the rest of my education and the start of a career. Is there anything you wish you would have done, or wish you hadn't? If you were in your late teens or early twenties again, what kind of things would you get involved in? Would you go to college or something else?

Hey I recently started my youtube channel and uploaded my first video. I've been getting a decent amount of negative attention on facebook from former friends and I'd love your input. Please rate! Thanks. https://youtu.be/ADyJ5M39zUk Although I stand behind some tenets in this video, I think I could have made a better and less divisive one.

Welcome to the boards, Tom! I wonder where you're at in New York? There's some very active meetup groups in the city.

I think a specific issue at hand is whether or not the caller's child is suffering from a form of child abuse as a result of being in the church. If so, then the child will be suffering from abuse, however mild, if the family continues with the church. I greatly appreciate and empathize with the vulnerability of the caller on the show and I cried while listening, but I wonder how the caller can expect much comfort in the LDS community if he wants to be himself.

I've been in therapy for roughly a year and I've gained a lot of insights from my therapists and from the show. Yet, there's a certain amount of recoil that I feel when I try to really think about my feelings and about what I'm doing in the present. I recognize that this might sound a little abstract but it's as if there's a mental block and I feel like I just can't get there. When I feel the desire to journal, I can produce a lot of writing but sometimes I question if it helps at all because I'm not adding anything that I haven't thought about to some degree before. I feel like I'm rationalizing and stating the obvious when I journal and not making much progress. When I think about listening to my alter egos in a delicate manner, I second guess everything about what is true self and what is false self. This is where I feel quite a bit of fear and repulsion. I think this might be the case because I wasn't listened to much as a kid. Yet, I don't really know how to overcome this resistance. Have you had experience with these feelings of resistance, fog, and fear?

Interesting! Thanks for sharing your experience on this topic. I think a lot of the skepticism of homeschooling comes from the fact that many homeschoolers are evangelical or fundamentalist Christians. Have you explained that you are secular? You also said that they were critical about the issue of social ability. Like you mentioned, I think this can be handled with extracurricular involvement and exposure. Have you shared other ideas and values that you have at the workplace? How has this been working out for you?

‘Radical Brownies’ Learn Social Justice Instead Of Selling Cookies
MRW replied to Alan C.'s topic in Current Events
“Mike Brown. He was shot because he didn’t do nothing. Only the police officer shot him because of his skin color.” I know there's a grammatically correct sentence in there somewhere, nevermind the actual argument. I saw something very similar to this on twitter and it's another attempt to inflict mythology upon children. I've also been through Oakland many times and the area right next to the airport is nice looking. But if you travel two blocks down, it looks like another country. -
Another good reason is that individuals cannot love or be loved without virtue. I also do not think that the financial aspect, mentioned earlier, is a very good argument either way because there is no correlation. You can find lots of examples of people benefitting greatly from evil and greatly from virtue. Thus, virtue is something that the individual must choose for himself or herself, consciously or unconsciously. I'd add that it is not possible to be perfectly virtuous in this political and social system but it is something to strive for if the individual desires happiness and pride.

Thanks Millie! I mentioned this page in my thread as well. Do you think the link will/should be updated on the community tab?

As another college student, I have Yik Yak at my university. I see apps like Yik Yak as a tool where the individual user decides how to interact through the app. At my college, a lot of the popular posts on Yik Yak are harmless comedy posts but some are more serious and may contain advice. I personally enjoy reading about other students and their achievemtents, regrets, and ideas. I also love Yik Yak because our campus has developed a lot of widespread inside jokes. For example, someone was complaining at the beginning of last semester that our school does not have a football team. Someone else replied by pointing out that instead our campus has a massive crane in the center that is contructing a new library. The crane started gaining a lot of attention because of how big it was and that it was in busy operation during the middle of the day. Then, people started posting jokes that they had prayed to the crane and done well on exams or that they wondered which dining hall to go to for lunch but they crane swung around and pointed the way. Soon enough, someone had created a twitter account for the crane and everyone who had the app was familiar with the inside joke. And when radical evangelists came to protest at my university, people rallied and shouted them down saying that the crane was the one and only true god. The evangelists have not returned since. All hail the Crane.

In the fall of last year, I sought out and created a Freedomain Radio group for the Washington D.C. area. I began my work on the free meetup.com service that Freedomain Radio linked to on the community section of the FDR website. Although there was some work required at the beginning, our D.C. group has been a growing success and we are now meeting at least once a month. I was able to make a close friendship with another D.C. member and he is now my coorganizer. But the community didn't stop with Washington. I was also developing friendships within the worldwide organizer community and even made a trip to New York City to meet with fellow philosophers there. Unfortunately, the free meetup.com everywhere service no longer exists and the conduit to stronger relationships for future philosophers is weakened. The free meetup service has reverted into a paid subscription and many cities have discontinued their FDR meetup.com profiles and have instead transitioned entirely to facebook, including Washington D.C. While the transition to facebook is perfectly understandable and appropriate, there is little to indicate that this transitioned occured here on freedomainradio.com. Would it be possible to add a link on the community tab of the website to this facebook group? It provides an up-to-date listing of all known FDR meet up groups. Thank you so much in advance. TL;DR: Please add a new link so new people can find their meet-up groups.

Welcome to the show Daniel and I wish you the best on the podcast binging!

I agree as well. I think Mike and Stef have a fantastic relationship and they're a hilarious and engaging duo on the air. Keep it up, Mike!

(Not a call in show, but really gets across the anti child abuse message.)

Hey FDR! I've just introduced a close libertarian friend to FDR. I've given him some really good intro videos that mainly focus on politics and the lighter information in general. I've also given him the Bomb in the Brain presentation for when he's ready for something more serious. But soon enough, he's going to start listening to call in shows and I was wondering if any of you had some favorite shows that that deal with self knowledge and family relationships that can help blow his mind. I already have two but I want some more. I think this thread will be helpful for future new listeners too.

Hey FDR! I'd like to point out that our Washington D.C. meetup group has our own official facebook group now. I'd like to shift away from the meetup.com site and towards that meetup group because anyone can view meetup.com groups whereas the facebook group is much more secure. People also check their facebooks much more often than meetup.com and friendships can flourish much more easily on facebook. Lastly, there is a strong FDR network infrastructure on facebook where people can find other members, other meetup groups, organizer groups, and find FDR content more easily. We also have another member helping me out with organizing and we're beginning to brainstorm ideas for the next meetup date and location. Give us your feedback and ideas.

Waldorf Private School for a 6 year old: Good idea?
MRW replied to Logan Hall's topic in General Messages
I haven't heard a ton about Waldorf schools but what I have heard and read really interests me. I'm curious to hear what your objections are. I suppose the main point of caution would be the teaching of anthroposophy, which is basically pseudophilosophy. Finding an ideal school is really tough. If I were in your shoes, I think I would look for a secular charter school with advanced ciriculum that can also provide enough one on one engagement with your daughter. -
Hey I realize this is a pretty big bump but I wanted to reach out to you guys because I'm helping plan a meetup for the Washington D.C. area and we'd love to have you guys on the meetup site if you aren't already there. We're planning on meeting on the 29th. http://www.meetup.com/Freedomain-Radio/Washington-DC/1079572/

"Coming out" as an atheist. //* Personal Rant *//
MRW replied to Kason's topic in Atheism and Religion
Welcome to the boards, Kason. One option that you have is to find a meetup group in your area. http://www.meetup.com/Freedomain-Radio/ If you find that the meetup groups in your area are somewhat innactive but still want to plan one, you can checkout this thread. https://board.freedomainradio.com/topic/40937-tips-for-starting-organizing-fdr-meetups/ I'm in a facebook group that holds weekly video conferences on planning meetups and if you're interested in that you can contact us there as well. https://www.facebook.com/groups/FDRMeetupOrganizers/ -
That was very well done.
