bitcoin The Future isn't Blockchain. It's HASHGRAPH.
Tyler H replied to Frederik's topic in Science & Technology
The expenditure of electricity through mining is not a waste. The hashpower of the network secures it against malicious attackers. Any attacker would need to exceed the hashrate and power consumption of 51% of the network in order to manipulate it to their advantage.- 8 replies

@Jake @meetjoeblack Coibase is an exchange, so their wallet is not under your direct control. Like a bank if you tell them what to do with your funds they will do it, but you are still dependent upon them to do so. There are many wallets that give you control over the private keys - the code that releases your coins for spending. Bitcoin.com, BTC.com, blockchain.info, all have decent mobile wallet software that keeps the private keys under your control. Personally I like bitcoin.com’s wallet the best. For better security go with a hardware wallet like ledger, trezor, or keepkey. If you don’t have control of your private keys you don’t have control of your bitcoin. Also, BitcoinCash is the real bitcoin. big banks invested money in Blockstream to sabotage bitcoin. The proposed solution to scale without increasing block size by developing the “lightning network” is a way for banks to maintain relevancy in the age of crypto currency. By performing transactions off chain it bypasses the consensus mechanism that decentralized bitcoin. If you’re into bitcoin for the freedom it can provide to the world then BitcoinCash is what you want to support.

upb Rebuttal to 557 regarding the legitimacy of "the golden rule"
Tyler H replied to soared4truth's topic in Philosophy
The problem with the golden rule is that it fails universality. It relies on the subjective preferences of each person. Some people like to get pissed on; the golden rule says it’s fine for them to go around pissing on people. The masochist gets to go around punching people in the balls and the white supremicist gets to kill black people because he’d rather be dead than black. Sure, in general, people get it, but it’s not philosophically valid. -
If you were to debate him he would accuse you of having not read the book.

My suggestion is to donate at a level where the value you have found from the show matches your ability to pay. Great to hear that your kids are being raised peacefully! If I could though I would suggest explaining to your kids, if you haven’t already, that you’ve changed how you raise them because you were wrong before and your mind was changed by better arguments. This will let them know that authority is derived through reason and evidence, not a person. Maybe this is already the case, but I wanted to offer that up to make sure your kids understand that you made a choice, and ultimately they have you to thank for recognizing that what you were doing was not good and changing your behavior, not Stef. Again, totally awesome you’ve made the commitment to peaceful parenting!

How and why can people ignore their God’s immoral ways?

How and why can people ignore their God’s immoral ways?
Tyler H replied to Gnostic Bishop's topic in Atheism and Religion
What does rejecting your father’s morals have to do with atheism? Atheism is not a moral system, nor does it preclude one. If atheism is can exist within moral and immoral systems, how could it be causal in either? It is a state of belief consistent with reality, nothing more and nothing less. Could you provide a more specific example? Which scientific claim is causally linked to which behavior that which moral system finds abhorrent? Nazism actually contradicts your point. Nazis were Christians. Part of Hitler’s propaganda campaign against the Jews included accusations of orchestrating the Bolshevik takeover in Russia which slaughtered the religious. Spreading fear to ensure the support of the German people; that they must act first to protect themselves or suffer the same fate. Why did the German’s adherence to the Christian moral system not prevent the slaughter of innocent people? -

Welcome Ben! -
Stef has suggested Parent Effectiveness Training by Thomas Gordon before. I would recommend it as well. I would also recommend the philosophical parenting podcast feed he has put together. Great stuff in there.

I think that where the level of porn consumption is in our society, whether you click on something or not is going to have zero impact on the reach these sites have. That being said, it’s probably healthier in general that you don’t watch it, but it seems like you have the urge to, or this wouldn’t be an issue. Like if you didn’t care then it’d be no problem to not watch it. If there was any question about a negative impact and you don’t have any desire to watch it, then there’s no problem right? But if you do have a desire to watch porn, and surrender to that desire, and you feel the urge to self attack for it, then you have an opportunity for self knowledge. Explore the feelings that arise. Talk back to the part of you that wants to attack you for watching porn and have a discussion with yourself about it.

How and why can people ignore their God’s immoral ways?
Tyler H replied to Gnostic Bishop's topic in Atheism and Religion
If there’s an argument in there I’m unable to extract it. How does an absence of belief in a deity cause people to kill? I can tell you how a belief in a deity does; someone claiming to speak for the deity says, “the deity orders us to kill these people”, so people who believe that deity to exist, to be all powerful, and to be deserving of their obedience go and do it. -
As far as I know it’s being republished so prior versions have been removed from the market.

@RichardY OP was talking about the US military specifically. The US military and a voluntary defensive military are two very different concepts. -
I notice a number of YouTube videos are not reflected in the podcast stream. I understand the listener calls being redundant, but there are quite a few short videos that only show up on the YouTube channel. Curious what the reason was.

Tyler H replied to Gnostic Bishop's topic in Atheism and Religion
It wasn’t their atheism at the foundation of their homicidal insanity. Their god was the state. A rejection of reason led to the inquisition and a rejection of reason led to the atrocities of communism. Both are dangerous because their methodolgies are incorrect. They are not based on objective fact leaving them open to manipulation by sophists claiming to speak for the abstract entity it’s followers are indoctrinated to obey. I couldn’t find where the causal link between the phenomena and God was found. Perhaps you could direct me to that data? Throw it in the new thread and I’ll take a look at the work of Thomas Aquinas you referenced and post my thoughts there.
