Can a monkey own property?
Sal9000 replied to JSDev's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
The monkey can own the photo because his brain controlled his fingers. His brain owns his body, thus he has self ownership. -
What happened to Argentina one a small scale has always been very common. See L'Argent by Zola for more details. He describes the speculators pretty astute. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%27Argent

[YouTube] The Truth About Israel and Palestine
Sal9000 replied to Freedomain's topic in New Freedomain Content and Updates
Medieval scholasticism died off in European universities a long time before the age of Enlightenment. It was called by Nominalism (Occam) and Humanism (Hutten, Erasmus). The humanistic turn 'ad fontes' (to the sources) meant that you studied original texts and not interpretations. This in turn led to the reformations, since many reformators (so called) started as philologists (Zwingli, Melanchthon) and read the Bible instead of scholastic texts. Can you give some examples where Kant uses scholasticism? He started out as a geologist and geographer and he also published works on the origins of the universe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Natural_History_and_Theory_of_HeavenI also fail to see that Leibniz was a scholastic. He invented modern Calculus, modern logic, studied biology and so on.While I read some Hegel I am not in the position to say anything about his background or his method. I doubt a lot of people can. Yes. Friedrich II enacted enlightened ideas by liberating the serfs and getting rid off corporal punishment. The same is true for Joseph of Austria. The free city states (Hamburg, Bremen, Lübeck...) where ahead though. Up until Pietism (a Lutheran sect) there was no public school system. Interestingly enough, the Pietists schools and universities were incubators for Enlightenment. Pierre Bayle's dictionary was widely distributed in those institutions. The reforms enacted by Stein, Hardenberg, and Humboldt had the intention to strengthen the Prussian state by trying to educate the intelligent people (the two upper tiers of school). Humboldt stated that going to school or to university should enable you to become a better person. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_von_Humboldt for details. That's too unspecific. Bismarck's goal was to make it impossible that there were coalitions against Germany (cauchemar des coalitions). He predicted the outbreak of a major war, if Russia and France would unite against Germany. Ironically, he even foresaw that a conflict in the Balkans would make Russia attack the Central European Powers. There is no straight line that leads from Bismarck to Hitler, since German foreign policy changed drastically over those years. A comparison with major colonial powers would have been more apt: The genocide of the British in South Africa, The genocide of the Belgiums in the Kongo, the nefarious actions of France in their African regions . -

There was enlightenment in Germany. In fact, the most well known motto of the Enlightenment comes from Kant: Other enlightened philosophers include: Leibniz Pufendorf (introduced natural law to the legal system) Thomasius (fought against torture and witch hunts) Wolff (cleaned philosophy from theology) Basedow (tried to modernize education) Lichtenberg (scientist and journalist) Lessing (author) Herder (philosopher) Rahel Varnhagen (led a local meetup for philosophers) Mozart -
Are Electronic devices not designed to last long
Sal9000 replied to Kaizerdave's topic in Science & Technology
One main element in planned obsolescence are the capacitators. You can find them in any electronic device. Lets say you want your product to fail in three years. You can do that by chosing the right one. There is a heuristic for the failing of capacitators. It's life in hours = 2000 hours * 2 ^ ((maximum temperature for capacitator in C°- usual temperature C°)/10). The maximum temperature for a cheap capacitator is 85°C, the usual temperature around 65°C. The total for that is 8000 hours. This means, that if you use that device for eight hours every day, the capacitator will last 3 years, when you run it 24/7 it will only take one year for the device to not work properly. -
I strongly recommend reading Guns, Germs, and Steel if you are interested in the subject. Eurasian civilisations had a headstart, which lead to an ever increasing level of technological advancement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guns,_Germs_and_Steel

Stefan's approach challenged
Sal9000 replied to kavih's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
What Cantwell says is insane. Counter-insurgency techniques (killing people, torture and so on) have been studied by governments all over the world. Some manuals describing tactics likely to be used in case of an insurrection are available online (http://www.fas.org/irp/doddir/army/fm3-24.pdf). I strongly recommend every armchair anarchist to see 'The battle of Algiers'. Warning: this movie is realistic in its display of violence http://www.chebmusic.com/viewvideo/64853/algerie/battle-of-algiers-english-subtitles '- 17 replies

Can everyone be rich?
Sal9000 replied to afterzir's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Economics answers that. For doing that, it looks at money and transactions. Once again, your perceptions of wealth don't matter for economics. It's like saying "I am pretty strong in physics". Without using the terminology used in physics this statement is nonsensical. To get a loan at non-predatory conditions you need securities. These are measured in money, or the expectance to create money in the future. Your ideas on how much you value your securities simply don't matter. -

Sal9000 replied to afterzir's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
You are right, but your perception does not matter when it comes to adding up numbers. It plays a role in psychology, but not in economics. If that wasn't the case you could go to a bank and say "I feel rich bc I have these apples I value so much, give me a loan plz". Economics looks at trades and transaction and not the reasons why they happen. -
Most lifeforms on our earth are GMO by this definition. Prokaryotic lifeforms exchange DNA via transduction which is nothing else than what GMO does (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacteria#DNA_transfer). And since bacteria constant most of the biomass on the Earth (iirc 70%) this method of procreation or exchange of DNA is more 'natural' than dimorphic sexual DNA transfer.

I think this has to be judged on a case to case basis. When Hoppe developed the theory of performative contradictions as the foundation of political philosophy for his Phd thesis (http://www.hanshoppe.com/wp-content/uploads/publications/Kritik_kaus.pdf) he was employed by a German university (He worked under Habermas at the so called Frankfurt School of Philosophy). When he applied that theory to Austrian Reasoning (http://docs.mises.de/Hoppe/Hoppe_Eigentum_Anarchie_Staat.pdf) he got a research grant from the German state to finish this post doc work.

Can everyone be rich?
Sal9000 replied to afterzir's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Let's have a look at a transaction:Agalloch (1 apple - 0$) - Sal9000 (0 apple - 1$)- - - -Agalloch (0 apple - 1$) - Sal9000 (1 apple - 0$)_______Zero sum. Let's assume I eat half of this apple and sell it to my husbandSal9000 (0,5 apple - 0$) - Hal9000 (0 apple - 0,5$)- - - - Sal9000 (0 apple - 0,5$) - Hal9000 (0,5 apple - 0,5$)_______Another Zero sum transaction. -
Can everyone be rich?
Sal9000 replied to afterzir's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
The amount of wealth is not fixed, but the sum of all transactions has to be 0. Economy is about scarcity. The ecosystem has a carrying capacity. Once it gets exceeded, it collapses. -
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=double+blind+tests+vaccines Because the Amish do get vaccinated. http://leftbrainrightbrain.co.uk/2013/08/10/the-amish-may-not-be-a-great-population-for-a-vaccinatedunvaccinated-study/ There are many more links that point out that Amish are undervaccinated. Here is an article dedicated to the subject http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herd_immunity Science has come a long way, especially our understanding of the immune system. Vaccines work because they activate antibodies, T-cells and Memory cells specific against the disease. There are damages when you get vaccinated and you have a weak immune system already.I have yet to meet an anti-vaxer who can explain how smallpox had been eradicated. Until then I dismiss their arguments as quack.

I know this sounds esoteric, but it depends on how you define time. Here is a nice article that shows what I mean http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/04/120423131902.htmThe Lorentzian manifold used to describe time in Relativity can be solved in many different ways. It is open for a variety of interpretations. You can (if you are good enough at maths) rearrange it in such a way that there is no 'closed past'.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolute_future#Causal_structure
-
Physical laws are time invariant. Without entropy you cannot tell if an event you witness is regressing or progressing in time. So far, nobody showed that the time arrow goes in one direction only. So the future changing the past is an option.
-
Causal determinism says that past events dictate future event. What happened in the 10th BCE determines what I have for breakfast this morning (oatmeal). In short: we see the past as fixed. The causations goes in one direction only, from the past to the present to the future. However, there is no actual proof that this is actually the case. It may well be, that future events change past events. The introduction of temporal 'arrow' by thermodynamics does not change that idea.
