It wasn't until I began listening to FDR that I realized how many people spank their children, I truly don't understand it. How you can justify hitting a child is beyond me, and the worst part is that is has so many worse implications down the road. I'm so sorry for the crap you had to go through, and it means you were probably deeply afraid of your father your entire childhood because of this. Essentially, your father threw away a healthy relationship and attachment out the window because he'd prefer to beat you. Disgusting. I'm incredibly sorry. Thanks for sharing.

What sates in the US have a high standard of living ?
NameName replied to aFireInside's topic in General Messages
I think this is what you're looking for, it's the Real Personal Income by state. This is average income and taking in price differences from state to state to determine the wealthiest states. This is 2011-2012: http://www.bea.gov/newsreleases/regional/rpp/rpp_newsrelease.htm Also, to see the change over time, here is an older version year 2010-2011: http://www.bea.gov/newsreleases/regional/rpp/2013/rpp0613.htm So this shows you the affordability of life. This next link is an AMAZING resource, it shows you the quality of life/happiness of people in different states. It's an interactive map and you can look at many different things like Job Satisfaction,Depression,Exercise, Nighttime safety and more: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/03/06/weekinreview/20110306-happiness.html Also, what type of job are you looking for? It is important to find a state that can offer the type of employment you seek. A state might look really good to you, but it might be a rural area that doesn't have the right jobs for you. Take what matters to you the most and apply it to the statistics I showed you, this might help. Wish you the best -
Imagine an action movie. The protagonist kills a bunch of people, no one cares. Imagine the protagonist raped a bunch of people, people would be outraged. This shows that people are more outraged by rape. As well, the average person can think of reasons that murder would be justified, such as self-defense, but most people agree rape is always wrong. This means if rape was a "Culture", that there would be a huge murder culture too. But me and my friends have never sat around discussing the murders we have done/want to do. If there is a rape culture, then there's an even bigger murder culture. This means that almost all crimes have a "Culture", meaning that using the word "Culture" to specify rape is pretty much meaningless. As well, the first step in philosophy is to define words by their proper definition and culture is defined as: the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. Rape is not intellectual achievement, it is a physical act, so "Rape culture" is impossible. This is how I explain the illusion of "Rape Culture" to the average person. Their rebuttal is usually something about 1 in 3 men being a rapist yadda yadda yadda. In one ear and out the other.

There are no best therapies, but there are bad ones. I personally like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Internal Family Systems Therapy. But that's just my own opinion, keep looking and researching yourself.

I'm sorry to hear about your living situation growing up You'll find an honest welcoming community here free from bullshit/abuse. I'm glad you found FDR, welcome!

"Yeah, now that i think about it this can't be applied to everyone". Maybe you could put out like "An ambition quiz" and we can see the results. That would be interesting.
-
"The fact that we spend time and energy posting on Internet forums about our crappy lives?" I disagree, the very fact that we are on here, shows ambition. If I didn't have ambition, I'd be a democrat doing things that don't challenge me and make me strive for virtue but that is what this site does, or more what philosophy does. Most posts on here aren't "Posting about crappy lives". Most are trying to improve our lives and others. As well, they range into many topics like current events, philosophy etc. If we were to spend our lives posting about our crappy lives, we would be on Tumblr. I just disagree with the basis of this question, I think most people on this site have ambition.

I've stopped hitting my children and now I have two new issues.
NameName replied to Bel Rick's topic in Peaceful Parenting
Hey there, thanks for stopping hitting your children. I am not an expert, nor a parent, however here are my thoughts: 1. How can I get my messages to reach my children in times like these? Negotiation. Negotiation is key as it makes the relationship win/win. Check out Stefans books on parenting. Can you think of a situation where you fail to find a method to reach your children? Maybe it will be easier to help if you start with a real example. 2. What can turn my view around and ease the burden upon my wife? Does your wife willingly take on more of the responsibility or is she hesitant? Only you can figure out why you do this to your wife and how to fix it. The key is communication, your wife is your sidekick and your number one allie, it is crucial to have 100% open, honest communication. I would suggest stepping in when your wife is stressed and busy and your wife stepping in when you're stressed and busy. I would study why exactly you opt out of parenting and put it on your wife. Only understanding the reason to the actions can lead to changing them. Good luck, I hope I was somewhat helpful! -
I'm not entirely sure, but I'd like to just put out some definitions to develop this question: Justice: Just behavior or treatment. Just: Based on or behaving according to what is morally right and fair. Moral: Concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or badness of human character.

What has lead you to the conclusion that many FDRers lack ambition?

NSA data sweep intercepted conversations of ordinary internet users
NameName replied to NameName's topic in Current Events
Good thinking TheAuger. If we are all on the list, no one will respect the list. This reminds me of the French Revolution when Robespierre had a list of names of counter-revolutionaries, and he executed a bunch of people. He wouldn't tell people who's on the list, this way people would obey out of fear of being on the list. Eventually, this lead to his execution. Hopefully the NSAs list will lead to execution of government -
Great post Jamz. Very well laid out and the perfect length. I think this is a good exercise for people even though it's usually for writers. Especially since people are usually encouraged to "Pursue their goals" but never encourages to understand why they have those goals. This also gives the looking at yourself from outside yourself perspective which is greatly beneficial. Thanks for your latest post.

Depends on what your reading level is. Fiction or non-Fiction, what genres? My favourite are the "My Side of the Mountain" series by Jean Craighead George

I hardly ever watch movies, my family does and I catch bits and pieces of them. Movies with bank robberies, car chases and martial arts is fine. Even people getting killed in them isn't too horrific, think the of the outlaw in the western town killing bad guys. I just saw parts of "Dead Man Down" and it was disgusting, like a man is tied to a chair and gets eaten alive by hungry rats. I couldn't look and it made me feel terrible. The movies I'm referring to are like "Saw" and "Would you rather". These types of movies usually have a terrible plot and it's all about the violence and gore. A movie I consider violent but nor disgusting would be something like "The Dark Knight". "Personally, I enjoy a lot of violent martial arts films because they usually resonate with justice & will-to-power narratives" Yeah, the movies I'm referring to usually have a "How much pain can humans handle and lets watch" theme and not a "Good guys can conquer and evil loses" theme of violence like you mentioned. You said your hypothesis is they either have very little empathy, or that they have anger that they would rather release through these films rather than he who has angered the viewer. This sounds like a good hypothesis. But then does that mean that if they get out their anger in this way, that if they got out their anger on the just person, they would like to inflict physical pain like they watch in the movies? Thanks for the reply

FDR changed my life, if I never found FDR, I would have kept pooping like a chump. I'm going to go try this. Thanks

There are so many violent movies out there that are very popular.Even though I like a good action movie with a couple car chases sometimes, many movies I've noticed lately are really graphic and gore filled. A highlight of these films, focus on the pain and desperation of people with no control. I have a lot of trouble seeing parts of these movies and was wondering what happens in peoples brains to make them enjoy watching these movies. Is it somehow connected to unresolved childhood issues? Any studies or hypotheses out there? Thanks!

It took me a little while to find research on this as when I Google "Police Child Abuse", the returned results were stuff like how police deal with cases of child abuse. I ended up finding these: http://jezebel.com/5991019/forty-percent-of-police-officer-families-experience-domestic-violence http://womenandpolicing.com/violencefs.asp Seems that police are far more likely to be abusive in the home than the general population. As well, they are more dangerous as they have guns and they are well connected with the police and it's harder to call the police on an abuser when the abuser is a cop. Hope this is helpful.

I really suck at navigating forum sites, didn't realize there was an introduction page. Hey, I am a young guy looking to implement philosophy into my everyday life and be a part of creating the best world possible. I want to destroy or leave all lies/bullshit/abuse/force and aggression from my life and am slowly working towards it. I joined FDR as I see it as probably the best source of truth that satisfies my addiction. FDR is a great resource to help me learn. As well, I enjoy trying to help others as best as I can. I also love meeting new people and the overwhelming empathy here is wonderful. I truly revel in the truth, helpfulness and empathy of the community here. I am trying to work getting rid of my self attack and inner critic and it's an ongoing quest. Thanks for the amazing resource, it's massive-ly helpful. Looking to get to know you all better, thanks! Just to clarify: "I joined FDR as I see it as probably the best source of truth that satisfies my addiction". By addiction, I mean my addiction to persuing truth. Not addiction to crack or anything.
