Welcome! No. You came to the philosophy website, time to drop some unfiltered philosophy on you I don't understand what this means. Are you still working entry level? Are you making decent money with a decent work schedule? Is your work rewarding? Is 'nowhere' defined as any place other than CEO or upper management? Gotta disagree with you here. As an employee your employer should absolutely be making money off you. That's your job, you have to produce more revenue than your total compensation. If you can't do that for the company, then the company either has to lay you off or soon face bankruptcy if they can't subsidize your position. I like Richard Daughtry's advice for investing. "Buy Gold, Silver, and Oil." The free books here "On Truth" and "Real Time Relationships," can help with finding the right woman and circle of friends. If you're going to have kids I would probably make sure that I could afford to raise them, and have the time to be the best parent I could be. If the Australian market is anything what the USA market looks like... I would run for the hills! I pity the poor souls that are buying houses right now Once again welcome!

Gender hypocrisy in the porn debate
MrCapitalism replied to Mike Fleming's topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
Check this video out. I'm ambivalent about pornography. I don't believe it's a good thing, but I also believe it is ubiquitous because of dysfunctions in gender relations. Here's another article (i'm going to edit some of this quote): http://www.playboy.com/articles/millennial-mens-porn-addiction If I can offer a bit of defense for the student; the girl that texted him was what is socially defined as "jail bait." There are a number of ways that interaction can end badly for him, with no assumed or given protections for him if it does not work out. At least none that are made aware to him as often as the dangers of male sexuality are made to the girls in his class. His porn star sexual outlet, on the other hand, for sure isn't nearly as satisfying as the girl texting him. However, porn carries substantially less risk and effort on his part. A supposed picture of the author. I don't mean to post this picture as shaming, but I guess to point out a glaring problem in her sex life she is unwilling to address in this article (if this in fact her). -
Jews hate my app because of the word "Nazi" in the title
MrCapitalism replied to Tony's topic in Miscellaneous
I'm actually amazed that it's 2014 and there is anyone on the internet who doesn't immediately know what a "grammar nazi" is.... This identification is intentional, and why the word Nazi is used. I personally think you're being concern trolled. I'm more concerned about the lack of any 3rd Reich paraphernalia in the logo. If I want to find my "grammar nazi bookworm" app... I would think I have to look for the tile with the Swastika, or a lot of red and black, or an iron cross, or at least an eagle carrying a wreath. I think his argument is that, yes, you did not actively think about these things; however you still experienced the lack of empathy and processed these conclusions, even if you didn't know that you were doing it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHDOgcOkDao

I had asked the question about the ages of the girls involved because I had a theory that some of these sexual experiences were happening at way too early of an age to be healthy, but I don't think I can really make that case on further thought. Some of the stuff is easy, like you having crappy friends which tried to hook you up with an obviously damaged sexually promiscuous girl. Some of the girls in your history also have been, in my experience, unusually aggressive in their pursuit of you.My new theory as to why you are so shy around these girls is because you are afraid of their sexuality, and of yours. Thanks for giving the important bits of your family history, as this I think supports that hypothesis. I think you quickly recognized that your mother's sexual choices have been completely destructive to your upbringing. So when you see young girls expressing their sexuality towards you, you immediately see just how incredibly dangerous that can be, and retreat in fear. If the targets of your mothers lust were criminals and abusers (don't know what 'crimes' your father supposedly committed, or why your mother left him), you could perhaps believe that these young girls must judge you as that type of man. Also, your stories didn't include any of these girls expressing any curiosity or empathy for you shutting down when subjected to their advances. They seemed to all just quickly give up in frustration, none of them put any effort into ",getting you in the mood." I'm sure you've all been taught that all men are closet rapists who will exploit any attractive women for sex whenever the opportunity arises. So they basically get pissed off and assume that you're 'broken' because you don't respond in this way, when their advances were met with fear and suspicion. I think you've taken the position that any women who you have the hots for is a potentially shitty mom, until she proves to you otherwise. Good for you for not kissing them!

Very few people I imagine. The primary concern is blindness and distraction. 3:08 is relevant.

My frame of reference is the United States. Would that schooling system be appropriate to judge your situation (eg.. 6th grade is about 11-12, 11th grade is 16-17)?
-
I now know 2 acquaintances who have put children less than 6 months old into day care. This seems so completely crazy that I cannot understand it. Both of them are working moms, one with what I think might be a career (I barely know her), and another who has a mediocre job. One of them has put her 3 month old into daycare. The other I think has done the same at around a similar age. She was talking about he expensive it is, and yet how it gives her a couple hours of free time each day. Considering this conversation, where we promote spending the formative years of a child's life having a close and respectful relationship, this seems like a huge contrast with 'dumping' your infant into the care of somebody else. I'd have to think that I'd be extremely distressed if a potential partner advocated this style of parenting.. I don't even... does anybody else know of young women making this choice? Anybody have any sort of explanation?

Aviation is stuck in the 60s
MrCapitalism replied to Alan C.'s topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
I'm glad to see this guy getting properly taken to task in comments... This article was terrible. My background: I am a working airline pilot. And no, aviation isn't stuck in the 60's..it's probably closer to the mid to late 50's. Aviation loves to pack new technology on top of old procedures. This keeps the infrastructure accessible to all levels of technology. The internet sucks and is useless in flight, we already have long range communications equivalent to sat phones, and many airlines have GPS trackers installed. Big deal. Works great...lasts long time. As magnus said, we're working with 1920's technology which does have limitations (blocked transmissions and manual frequency changes being two), but which also has a lengthy and experienced track record. We know the strengths, we mitigate the weaknesses. And that's like 90 years of reliable function. This is an incredible and often life saving feature of the ancient radio system, especially when taking off and landing. It's a shame the author doesn't have this level of awareness. This is the equivalent of being able to press a button in your car and have direct verbal communication with the drivers around you. Again, who cares about the internet. Real time voice is a reality, and GPS trackers are just scare tactics that are a result of this very rare and unfortunate accident of MH370. The only purpose GPS trackers could possibly have would be to locate the bodies faster. In an emergency, the pilots will not be shy in telling everybody they can exactly where they are to the best of their ability... remember, they want the rescue boats to pull them out of the water as well! This is terribly uninformed. Radar (direction, range, speed) and transponders (altitude, unique identification) are vastly superior to GPS based systems, this is why they are still in use. A radar sweeps a full 360 degrees in what, 10-30 seconds? So every 10 seconds the air traffic controller has the real time position of every aircraft within their jurisdiction being directly fed to their equipment, without having the latency of being processed by a GPS tracking service and then routed through the internet, with the possibility of connection problems and information loss/corruption. However, the radar system is going to be supplanted by the addition of GPS, traffic, and other information shared between the controller and pilot. The author is correct that radar cannot see beyond the horizon way off the coast, but the system is designed to function with this limitation. Investigators already had a decent idea of where AF447 was even without radar coverage, and they started collecting debris and bodies within days of the aircraft going missing. MH370 is an unfortunate exception, and hopefully we'll learn some good lessons from this. Internet supplied, ground based, radar is vastly inferior to on-board weather radar, and everybody knows it (except this guy). It has low resolution, low update rate, cannot be adjusted by the pilots in real time, and doesn't have the same vantage point as an antenna bolted to the nose, or hanging from the wings.Internet radar is something pilots use when they cannot afford or it's not possible to mount a radar to the aircraft. It's also handy when you're in the briefing room of the airport and choosing a route of flight. Really good for the 'big picture' decisions but terrible for the real time choices that need to be made in flight. These procedures date from at least the 30's - 40's. It would be cool if it could be changed, but gosh it would make my job incredibly easy (read: reduce me awareness of the situation). New lessons would need to be learned about this procedure, but I say go for it. Let the guy on the ground fly my plane for me :-) Ice can be invisible while it forms, so this is an unreliable standard for fighting ice. We instead use temperature and flight conditions to determine when to activate ice protection. My aircraft automatically detects ice formation and activates the systems automatically. I have of course had this system fail in flight and had to manually over-ride it. Real time weather is useless for this activity, the only appropriate standards are flight conditions+temperature, or sensor activation. In my experience, pilots are a weird mix between old tradition and new technology. In a pilot forum I frequent, there is currently a thread which amounts to the question of "what is better: letting student pilots use a calculator to solve math problems, or keep mandating that they use a metal slide rule instead?" -
Ever head of.... depth of field? Edit: I personally think the rock dropped below a small hill.. I think it can still see the top of it shifted to the right, just above the large shadow.

CNN link: http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/17/world/europe/ukraine-malaysia-airlines-crash/index.html?hpt=hp_t1 Of course this is all speculation at the time. New information could very well determine there was another cause. However, this isn't the first time a government has used a Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) system against a passenger aircraft. There have also been cases where the cause was believed to be a SAM hit, but the investigation revealed otherwise. Given the altitude of the target, this must have been a large weapon system. Not a shoulder mounted launcher wielded by a lone terrorist as depicted in Hollywood. Current rumors it was a "Buk" system. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9K37_Buk Hopefully, as with all aviation accidents, a thorough investigation will find the root causes and contributing factors.

What other Philosophers do you listen/watch/read?
MrCapitalism replied to chrispy's topic in General Messages
I highly recommend "The Economics and Ethics of Private Property" By Hans Hermann Hoppe. Pretty much anything by Murray Rothbard is going to be awesome. Walter Block's "Defending the Undefendable" Series is a lot of fun. -
Welcome!

I haven't read much of this thread, or even watched the videos, but in what little time I have so far, I'd like to add this: I think the statement can be even further improved to, ""Your doctor looked at you and identified your biological sex, based on whether you would produce sperm or egg cells as an adult." I think even using the word 'assign' is incorrect, as it implies that the doctor had any ability to make a decision on the part of the sex of the child, or that the process is any way subjective. The doctor had no choice in the matter, his job was only to use his/her experience and medical training to make a proper identification of which plumbing the newborn was equipped with. Since I've jumped into this thread without reading it, I guess I can share a personal experience. I had a coworker that underwent a change from becoming a man to a woman. He was going to undergo the surgery soon, and wanted us to call him by his new name, and to address him as a female. Of course we were happy to comply, and 'she' later left the company. I've since seen her, and do in fact refer to her as a female, and by her new name. It really doesn't matter to me, we weren't terribly close at work, although he was (and is) a great source of help and a role model. He of course is free to do whatever he wants with this body, and I have no real issues with conversation. But on a fundamental level I still consider him a male (partly because the transformation is so subtle that I still recognize him as a man), partly because biologically in many ways he still is, even if he is post-op.

What sates in the US have a high standard of living ?
MrCapitalism replied to aFireInside's topic in General Messages
Lots of manual labor jobs to be had in the oilfields in California. The conditions suck, but the pay is pretty decent. You may want to look into that. -
This doesn't sound like any sort of solution at all. If the problem was that he lacked ambition and she was setting his goals, then it doesn't make sense to get ambitious with the business and set goals for him. That's not a solution, that's just continuing the dysfunction. I still don't understand what the problem is. Is it a problem that he isn't ambitious, and she is? Is there some legitimate reason this is a problem.. or is it a cultural thing (eg... "the guy should be more ambitious and lead the girl"). If she wants some guy that has a drive to succeed, why is she dating this guy? I hope she doesn't think that she's going to magically change him. This was the delusion that nuked my nuclear family, no sense letting the process repeat itself.

So God exists, because God exists. Any evidence pointing to the non-existence of God is invalid because it is a product of God's creation, necessitating the existence of God. Okay.
-
How do you know?
-
Yes, you can. I gave you the evidence of evolution. You addressed evolution with a rhetorical question, followed by restating your premise. But your premise cannot be accepted since I already provided evidence against it.
-
The theory of evolution is a terrible enemy of the true religious, because it argues what is claimed to be the impossible. That creation (or 'design') can occur without conscious input. Your second premise "consciousness is the route of creation" would be invalidated because suddenly creation becomes the route of consciousness (many living organisms cannot be considered conscious, and they are evolutionary ancestors). Your premise then transforms from a) Consciousness --> Creation, to b) Creation --> Consciousness --> Creation, which is reduced to a tautology c) Creation. This reduction invalidates the premise. TLDR, what is your knowledge of the theory of evolution?

A Free Market Defense of Walmart? Not so Fast.
MrCapitalism replied to JamesShrugged's topic in Listener Projects
Here's the same argument made by a free market advocate 9 years ago. https://mises.org/daily/1950/WalMart-Warms-to-the-State You only love free market enterprises to the extent they are free market. Welcome to the boards btw!
