How to listen to more FDR in a shorter space of time
Tony Crowe replied to LovePrevails's topic in Science & Technology
That is interesting to know. Thanks for the tip. -
This is my first restyle of the FDR board and chat. The default style is great but I wanted to put a spin on it. Skinned elements: + Global font change + Wider content area + Branding and top right navigation + User bar and search box + Breadcrumbs and sub-navigation (near social icons) + Main content section + Left and right side boxes like notifications and folders + Profiles + Avatars + Chat To install the theme you will need the browser addon Stylish. Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/?src=search Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylish/fjnbnpbmkenffdnngjfgmeleoegfcffe Then download the style at userstyles.org: http://userstyles.org/styles/97080/freedomain-radio-defaultish Screenshots: Enjoy!

[YouTube] The Truth About Karl Marx
Tony Crowe replied to Freedomain's topic in New Freedomain Content and Updates
Well, I don't know the degree to which academics try to prop him up but that's like grabbing hold of a tree with your hands and trying to uproot it. It's not happening. That's interesting and I appreciate you sharing. So did he speak of unity and other ideals that you liked? -
Can you guys take a look at my resume

Nice work on the resume. It like the simple and elegant design you did. I hope they give you a shot! -
[YouTube] The Truth About Karl Marx
Tony Crowe replied to Freedomain's topic in New Freedomain Content and Updates
I listened to the video earlier while I was cooking a brunch. I was appalled by the tale and nearly lost my appetite which is a difficult thing to happen with me. It also raised questions in me which I will pose to you. In conversations I've heard people say "I used to be a Marxist." Does that mean they lived as he lived, lived as he spoke, or had a passing interest in his work? Something else? Did you ever consider yourself a Marxist? I'm guessing some people go over this information in college. Is that right? Does the material they're buying in school include what is discussed in the video by Stefan and the book he references, "Intellectuals" by Paul Johnson? In university do students discuss Marx's alleged use of the dark side? Lastly, how did you feel when you watched the video above? -
Moving to a new place sounds pretty exciting! I'm not in Denver but a little ways away in Boulder. I met with some gents in Denver a few months ago and I'd like to meet again soon. Here's the link to the meetup for Denver: http://www.meetup.com/Freedomain-Radio/Denver-CO/ I'll keep an eye out and I'll keep in touch to see what we can do. GL with the move!

I think a free society would be able to compete in regards to quality and the moral high road. As far as dirt cheap prices on crappy goods I don't think a free society would be able to complete nor would they want to. The example of the tech industry comes up a lot in the show where it is unregulated and constantly improving in many ways. I believe that with less regulation people in the tech industry could move into areas that are currently regulated and vastly help improve quality, efficiency, and safety. Right now there's just no incentive to. Do you think you would want to buy from a place under control of a tyrant when you have a choice? Wouldn't it be risky since you'd be dealing with people having no ethical standards? Do you think a place with such shitty living arrangements could compete with a free society on quality?

I realize my comment is many months late but I wanted to say thanks for posting those. I'll be on the lookout in case you post more.

MrMoo, I enjoyed the comic. Both of those characters are quite brave but there is alcohol involved. Nothing like a little liquid courage to get the debate on child abuse fired up! I'll keep an eye out if you do any more. Thanks!

I'm not really competent to comment on that article about fractal binary but I have something to add for computing in general. Regardless of what the fundamentals are they will be in high demand in the market if quantum computing becomes practical. Next, those fundamentals will likely be used to create abstract constructs like libraries and interpreters that will make things easier for the normal people to use. Does that make any sense? And, can you talk about why you're interested in quantum computing?

Eric, I'm so sorry for what you're going through. It breaks my heart to hear that. I think it's quite amazing how, even after being drugged long term, there's a side of you still awake and questioning if it's the right thing to do. Huge kudos! Who can you trust? I don't know. When I was going through rough times like that everyone around me was no help at all. If the fire of curiosity still burns in you it seems like you have a very powerful ally in there. I'm sorry I don't have any drug-specific information. I just wanted to express my concern and sympathy for such a hard trial you're enduring. -TC

Talking to bro about not hitting his kids.
Tony Crowe replied to son272's topic in Peaceful Parenting
Can you tell us how you felt at the moment you saw it happen and how you felt later on when you thought about it? Also, can you help me understand how you can have a good relationship and also be "shugged off" at the same time? You don't have to do anything right now. It's a volatile situation for anyone to be in so be careful. k? -
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on journaling. I have also recently gotten into journaling and I really enjoy hearing about how others are going at it. When I started it did feel clumbsy but eventually a part of me that had been silent came out like a flood. [[ Emotions ]] When I feel a strong emotion it really helps to get out my thoughts. I'll even rage all over the journal explicitly if I want. There's nobody saying I can't write whatever I want. I also LOVE to write when I'm joyous! [[ Integrity ]] If I journal about a problem I've been having, while I re-read it later, I can track my progress through that issue. It's helped me recognise if I have been living my values. Re-reading the journal was a bit unnerving for me at first too(like the OP said) but it's gotten easier. [[ Acceptance ]] Sometimes the healing process seems daunting for me. Keeping in mind that I experienced significant challenges growing up I can learn to have compassion for my experience. I won't sensor anything I write in my journal. If I'm going to do justice to my life I will write anything and look at it with curious acceptance. I'm never wrong or bad for what I write. I hope that is helpful for anyone following this thread. If you can share your tips too I would surely appreciate that.

No demos or screen shots yet. I started recently redoing this app for a 0.2 release. The UI will soon be using Bootstrap 3.0: http://getbootstrap.com/components/ The 0.1 release was highly experimental so a lot of things are redone.

I switched around the journal entry editor and applied a few patches for Firefox. Here's the link again: https://github.com/tcrowe/journal Are you using any software to facilitate journaling? If so, what is it? Can you tell me about it and what you like or dislike?

Cornellius, what an amazing message. I feel the same way and thank you for sharing!

Hey Rob that is an interesting concept of a reminder to journal. I think a lot of times when wrapped up in the day-to-day a reminder to get in touch with my feelings would be helpful. For that particular purpose I would probably want to rely on my existing calendar, like the one on my phone, rather than replicating that functionality in the journal app. I wonder if there is anything that a person can wear that detects stress or relaxation and could send an alert based on that. Let the mood ring tell you when it's time. lol!

Just to update the status of this project, I've been using this journal for about a week and it's been a good experience. I think the simplicity and robustness of the software is important so that it instills confidence that I can type and not lose the information. The data is stored as JSON files which are sorted by month. Backing up the information is simple. Transforming or converting the data to another format would be simple for a novice programmer. I hope that helps. I think my next post will be a demo image so you all can see what this thing looks like.

Your opinion on a behavior I have notice in people
Tony Crowe replied to wdiaz03's topic in Self Knowledge
(I really wanted to use the word flabbergasted.) If they have the purchasing blues afterwards that can be really annoying, eh? The word afford just means the purchaser has enough money to buy it but if they're broke afterwards that may be quite foolish. If you are purchasing items and you have enough to provide for yourself afterwards that's the responsible thing for sure! Friends who buy lots of stuff often times want someone to share the experience with. Numerous times when I was younger a friend would invite me to do things and provide the equipment. I'm fine with all that. That can be pretty fun! If people are buying things and never using them that's really a shame, right? That is wasteful but is it immoral? -
@weeb, I like your prescription for success. When I was ready to heal and move on I did that. @Cornellius, My goodness! What a trial you are enduring. I wish I could give you a suit of armor that diflected your attacks at yourself. You'll have to use your imagination. I want you to pick yourself up and start doing what you know is right. This world will never be free if good people give up trying.

Your opinion on a behavior I have notice in people
Tony Crowe replied to wdiaz03's topic in Self Knowledge
Great topic! I hear about this all the time. People are totally flabbergasted by the spending habits of others. ---------------------------- wdiaz03: "where someone is interested in something" I like that. We preface this conversation with an acknowledgement that the people we're talking about have something they are into. That's much more interesting than having no interests or being interested in watching TV. lol ---------------------------- wdiaz03: "they have to get the absolutely best they can afford" Get the best you can afford? Sounds good! I also want the best that I can afford! ---------------------------- Here's what I would ask you: Do you spend a lot of time analyzing the purchases of other people? Do you view these people as incompetent? Do you want to rub it in people's faces that you are happy even while spending less money? Do you wish people were more interested in virtue or developing a bond rather than worshiping gadgets? -
I've journaled a number of different ways but I kinda felt like making a quick app for it. Journal: https://github.com/tcrowe/journal Right now it includes only the most basic functionality of journal entries by month. In the future I want to support a few more features like theming and search. This is not a big, fancy, production piece so you'll probably be let down if you expect a lot. I am also seeking peer review and collaboration if anyone wants to jam on it. Requisite Skills ------------------- HTML CSS Bo-staff skills JavaScript Coffee Script It may interest you that there is a JSON data storage module behind this project. The journal was a way for me to do some practical testing on it. splash: https://github.com/tcrowe/splash If you want to talk about it please send me a message via this message board. If you want to post bugs please use the issues page on github.

How do I deal with people who stonewall?
Tony Crowe replied to harbinger truth's topic in Self Knowledge
harbinger truth, that is difficult when we want to have a discussion with someone we care about and they side-step or stone-wall it. When it happens to me I try to ask myself "What is my motive for discussing this?" or "What is the goal of this conversation?" I can also ask the other person what their goal is if I'm unsure. Usually when I press for a definition it exposes the depth of knowledge or interest people have in that subject. If they aren't interested or their goal is not to explore for the truth then I leave them to believe whatever they want. Have you checked beforehand what the goal for the conversation is before putting a lot of effort into it?- 6 replies

I have used one of those machines and I remember it being an Intel board. I searched for "what motherboard does OptiPlex 780 have?" The top results returned the model "C27VV 0C27VV" which looks like the one I used. I don't know your circumstances but that will not be a high performance machine. It did well for me years ago for programming and some minor graphical work. But, if I had my choice I'd rather save up and buy/build something modern and fast.
