Why am I drawn toward arguing w/ irrational people...
Tony Crowe replied to SamuelS's topic in Self Knowledge
*whispers* I know. I'm asking that to find out if the word you used "argument" accurately describes the interaction. I don't think it does. Do you? -

Tony Crowe replied to SamuelS's topic in Self Knowledge
SamuelIS, This is the definition of argument you gave: Personally I like it but I would probably want to be more clear about it with myself. Are you satisfied with that definition? Next, would you like to answer if you think you are doing that? Lastly, does the other person know what the goal is? (like explicitly) -Tony -

SamuelIS, What is your definition of argument or ideally what would you like to get out of an argument? Is what you're doing in accordance with the definition? If so, how? If not, why not? -Tony -
Trotter332, Thank you for elaborating on what's been going on with you. I know somewhat how difficult it can be just to consider this, talk about it with others, or talk about it with your Mom directly. I also did that. I have some more questions. If you want to answer or not that is totally fine. Has anyone stuck up for you or sided with you in the past? Has anyone acknowledged your concerns in a way in which you were satisfied in the past or recently? If you cease contact can you handle any abuse which may be directed at you by family or friends? If you cease contact can you still manage financially? Before you do it can you get access to someone who can be council for you emotionally? -Tony

Hi Trotter332, It must be a very troubling and serious situation if you're considering that. These are just my initial questions for you. Would you mind taking a crack at them? Why would you want to end that relationship? Have you told her about what you are concerned about? If so, what was the conversation like? Have you spoken with anyone else close to you about that? Take care! -Tony

can anyone recommend a good email service?
Tony Crowe replied to Omega 3 snake oil's topic in Science & Technology
If you want to learn about email you could try running your own server. On Windows there's a good and free one called hMailServer. Then to keep your messages secure you could work with PGP on your email client. And if you're really ambitious you could study the underlying protocols called SMTP, IMAP, and POP. Are you technically apt? -
If you run a CJDNS node please private message me and connect up with me. We are building up our Mesh Net over here in Boulder, CO and it would help us to get connected with you. If you are not familiar with CJDNS, it's a private IPV6 network or mesh net, also known as Hyperboria. http://hyperboria.net/ https://github.com/cjdelisle/cjdns

Self-Esteem. Signs of High Self-Esteem and Health
Tony Crowe replied to Darius's topic in Listener Projects
I enjoyed the video, Darius. It's nice to hear about what that type of person might be like in detail. I often think about this subject but having the qualities enumerated is very helpful.- 1 reply

I moved to Boulder, Colorado, US, about 6 months ago. I have gotten out to see the mountains up to 9000 ft / 2700 m. As it was my first cold winter I opted more to stay indoors(basically chicken out). Now that it's warming up I'm looking to get out more. Moving up to this elevation of 5000 ft / 1500 m took me about 2 to 4 weeks to adjust. I wouldn't say I'm into sports but I can say I'm into casually meandering along with the streams or cruising around on my bike. lol

Is hillwalking like we might say hiking? That would seem to insinuate changes in elevation, rocky terrain, or open lands around you. Is that right?

By applying philosophy directly in my life I was able to transcend awful relationships, gain techniques for self knowledge, and learn to be comfortable in my skin for the first time. Considering where I was it was the most prudent thing I could think to get involved with. For some people I speak with philosophy is an interesting intellectual topic and for a few it's something meant to be lived. Do you have any thoughts on that?
-
Sweet intro dood! That is very interesting to hear about. What do you like to write your novels about? Any recurring theme? What about drawing? Any particular style or thing that you draw? Got any posted on the internets? Yeah, philosophy is totally essential for mental clarity!

Stefan and Caller, I have to admit that because of my own limitations I almost didn't listen and I couldn't empathize with the caller right away. I see now, because of Stefan's example, that if you hang in there and dig deeper you can connect with someone and make a difference. I would be so enthused and excited if the caller follows through. Thank you both for sharing that. Here's the link if you want to have a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRTv_dyPPIY -TC

Hi from Cleveland, Kansas City and Russia
Tony Crowe replied to aleles's topic in Introduce Yourself!
Ah, thanks for pointing out the unification of math and computer science in Russian education. I was not formally educated in this area so I'm not sure how it works where I have lived. The type of consulting that I do would be characterized by cycles of sales, planning, development, testing, and releases. Sometimes I have worked by contracts and other times I just have a good rapport with the people I work with and we don't use formal contracts. I have also used ASP.NET MVC in depth and I think that the .NET + SQL paradigm is a very powerful platform to build applications on. When I diversified platforms the friends and acquaintances I had who worked exclusively within the Microsoft technology paradigm were not very supportive of me using other technologies. I experienced a sort of code bigotry because of my choices to expand the solutions I was able to offer my customers. Ultimately I was able to transcend the single employer, single operating system, single framework barrier and move onto embracing computing fundamentals instead. There's something for me to love about the hard work people have poored into each and every system. I'm not in any way saying what I did is better. I think it's just to point out that I wanted to see what was out there in order to know if I was offering the right solutions to my customers and to preserve my coding sanity! And, if any of that type of stuff is interesting to you please do get in touch. I like to hear about other's experiences who are focused on doing work in this field. (Especially the ethically minded.) -TC -

Are we bringing pink back to men's fashion? (reference to our images) I like your mentality there. Maybe with better communication methods we can reach people a little easier and make our case. The ones who firmly commit to a violet ethic can really get lost anyway, right? Like you formally studied mathmatics? If so, that's really cool! Is there a particular focus you have with math? Also, very cool! I'm currently working within a technical environment including OSX, Debian, and Windows operating systems, JavaScript on the client and server, Redis, and CouchDB. Those are some of the technologies I'm employing at the moment in my consulting work. How do you get down? ] -TC -

Welcome Alex. That's dedication! (Catching up on the podcasts at increased speed.) I don't understand this part: I thought all political parties were fundamentally similar in that they make ludacrous promises, do the opposite, and help us blow our collective wealth. I do know there is a difference and that is that they spell their party's name differently. What does math have to do with? That's pretty cool you want to implement what you have learned in your life. Can you tell me what challenges you have faced when trying to live your values? Are your values any different than the people around you? Again, welcome! Hope to hear from you soon. -TC -
Oh yeah, some of the shows tear me UP! It can be sad but I am really really proud that these gents and ladies are working toward something amazing in their life. We sometimes, in the chat, talk about the "Stef test" which is to show a friend or family member a Stef video and see how far they make it. Have you ever done that? I can't remember if the "Stef test" came up in the shows, forum, or chat first but it's amazing! I don't know much about jazz but I like orchestral and electronic music. I'm not very knowledgeable about specific artists but Pandora says I like "unsyncopated melodic" styles. I'll check out some of the artists you listed and see if I like it. How did I end up here? More than ending up here I deliberately, painfully, and now joyfully cast away the zombies in my life in order to make way for the good ones. Even though the topics here are pretty serious I sometimes end up rambling about cycling and cooking. Beware. lol What kind of business are you working now?

From what I gather it's like you're saying low self esteem is like not having an accurate picture of one's own self worth. Or another way is not having an internal value of self worth but relying on external feedback to make the determination. Is that right?

I enjoyed reading your letter of introduction, EUbrainwashing. I'm happy to know that your life experiences haven't robbed you of your sensitivity and concern. And I'm further grateful that your life experiences brought you to us! Be well, EUbrainwashing. p.s. A more pleasant and suitable user name can be selected in the settings.

Darius, I enjoyed your video especially the part about the abuser seperating the child from his allies. I almost didn't click the link because your post didn't give much detail about what was in it but I had seen other posts from you and trusted it would be good. I'm not sure if others will know that. Thanks!

Inspiring! You are working pretty hard to make it through! -
This was a quick one so not tons of detail. Handy if you want to dim the light from your screen. See attachment for demo. Here's the theme on userstyles.org http://userstyles.org/styles/98166/freedoma-radio-darkest The addon you can use for it is "Stylish" for Firefox or Chrome.

"I don't care what others think of me" ??
Tony Crowe replied to aFireInside's topic in Listener Projects
Ivan, I like what you said about "working through the self" in regards to selfishness and selflessness. I think you understand deeply what most people overlook or wont admit in that regard. I ejoyed the video. Thanks! dsayers, I never looked at it like that so I appreciate your take on it. When I have heard that statement, "I don't care what anyone thinks" (Florida version), I could never make sense of it. If my friend said that to me I'd definitely question it now. In the past I just dismissed sayings like that. --- I haven't heard someone say this in a long time. Is that good?
