There is no replacement for therapy. Therapy is therapy. But this doesn't discredit guitar as being a productive and creative way to express yourself as well as find something else to focus on other than your introspection. Introspection is important, for sure, but you can't ruminate in it all day long. Playing guitar would be a good way to take a break so that when you do jump back into introspection, your perspective will be a bit more refereshed because you've given to other aspects of yourself in terms of creativity and expression. Also, I believe there ARE some classes classified as art therapy. I don't know much about it, and the kind I'm aware of is therapy for like brain trauma patients. Playing instruments or painting or writing for them helps keep their memory and brain faculties in tact. I'm not sure about personal therapy being found in art therapy though. In a way, artistic expression in itself is therapy in a way that its giving you the space and time to unloading your emotions a bit. Do you journal btw? I have an article on it on my website right here. Again there's no replacement for therapy, but if you need emotional release, guitar is a good way to go, and journaling is even deeper if you write for the purpose of self knowledge and recovering traumatic events.

Is love conditional or unconditional?
MysterionMuffles replied to MysterionMuffles's topic in Philosophy
I would agree that if love is an involuntary response to virtue, love is conditional in that you can not love a non-virtuous person. However, would it really be called unconditional love for a parent to raise a child? I mean they can still provide the essential basics for kids without really loving them, as is the tragic case for most of the world as it is. -

Movie recommendation - Don Jon
MysterionMuffles replied to Julien's topic in Reviews & Recommendations
OH wow I did get disgusted with Scarlett Johannson's character avoiding fundamental topics and Juliane Moore's being more curious and compassionate, being the opposite of Scarlett's do this and do that attitude. Thanks for pointing that out. I love love love this movie! -
What are your thoughts on love and do you think it's conditional or unconditional?

My dad posted this meme on Facebook today: And I immediately dismissed it as bullshit because it's quoted by a REVERAND! However, at the bottom left you can see the site to an MD and so my curiousity got the best of me. On the surface, this woman's website looks like it's all about garnering a healthy loving relationship with your children. However, if you read just about any article's first paragraph, you can tell it's really a ruse for self serving parenting as opposed to peaceful parenting. THEN I FIND THIS ARTICLE: Parents, Beware. Spank and You Go to Jail Is the first line and already you can tell where this is going... Red flag 1: single mother. No need to get into detail about that. Red flag 2: Why is Jack back talking? Red flag 3: the ONLY way he stops is giving a swat on the--? Oh the euphenisms. Red flag 4: YES Lara should go to jail, or better yet, burn in hell! "No one believes that it's acceptable to abuse women. But that's not what the new law in Delaware is about. Husbands who abuse wives couldn't care less about the law, and social workers in every state are so overwhelmed tryin to punish husbands who are really hurting their wives that only a tiny fraction of abusers actually go to jail. The point of the law is to allow government officials to send a clear message to husbands: you are the bad guys and we know how to husband better than you. Seriously?" And one more minor point. Delaware says that parents should go to jail for spanking their children but not for aborting them. Can you tell me what I’m missing? What's missing is parental moral responsibility. I........can't even continue. If you want to take more cracks at some other passages from this diabolical article, please feel free to do so! I also found this article HILARIOUS: How to Love My Son Without Enabling Him Yes because loving someone enables bad behaviour...hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....I would argue that loving a child would be letting them know if they have any behaviours they need to change or at least examine. This one's about a follower of Meeker's asking advice on her who son ended up in jail, and her response is to ENFORCE MORE AUTHORITY WHEN HE GETS OUT! HAHAHA yes because he's not gonna get enough of that in jail, right? Excuse my cynicism, but this woman's articles piss me off so much. They're all under the guise of promoting happy healthing parental bonds, but are loaded with horrible advice. She's a pediatrician for shit sakes! Pediatricians, of all people, should not be FOR these unhealthy parenting practices.

Save $20,000 on Therapy by Buying a $20 Journal
MysterionMuffles replied to MysterionMuffles's topic in Self Knowledge
Whoa! Hey Ryan thank you very much for your openness and vulnerability. Yeah, can't really heal our pain through external projects unless it's something creative that expresses those emotions like through art or writing imho. And I'm in the same boat as you. I know I need therapy, but I am in the process of finding a new job before I can do that. Hm I wonder though, within the article, was it not clear that I was not suggesting to replace therapy with simply just journaling? I really like the title, but if I could help alleviate some of the common irritation it causes people--mostly FDR users, when they see the title--by expanding a little bit in my disclaimer? I did say there are no short cuts to self knowledge and you can't expect the same results. Should I also go on to say that you can potentially save that money doing some pre-work before going full tilt into therapy? -

MysterionMuffles replied to MysterionMuffles's topic in Self Knowledge
Ryan did the negativity stem from the preconceived negativity from the thread or the title itself really did provoke something in you as well, Ryan? Just a small explanation, I made that title as satire akin to Stefan's speech in Detroit being entitled Shocking Misogynist Defends Male Abuse or something like that. It's eye catching and disorienting and some people will either dismiss it, be curious to see how horrible it is, or be open minded to see if the title is in fact sarcastic. Better yet, Estrogen Based Parasites was also a title that can be easily misconstrued. I just wanted to catch people's eyes but also be funny about it like I tried in the opening statements of the article. -
hahaha oh I get it

Hm I am now curious James, why would you be quick to criticize something based on its title as opposed to looking at the content? I sense people you know have made the claim that journaling and good friends is better than therapy. What's your history with that? As I'm fairly new at this blogging thing, I came here with the utmost humility and vulnerability, ready to accept any constructive criticism, and felt like the FDR boards was a safe place for that. But then I read your comment and I was immediately concerned if I did something wrong. My mind filled with assumptions like is he just saying that because the title makes a strong claim, or was there really unhelpful and dangerous advice in my article? I had to edit my post to remove those assumptions and opted for an open ended question instead because I didn't want to make an ass out of u and me. It's a personal pet peeve of mine when people criticize my work before they even finish reading it, let alone read it at all. I don't know if any other artists or writers are like that, but that's the way I am. I think it's kind of unhelpful and dangerous to give feedback without looking at the actual content. That would be like a therapist offering advice without having listened to their patient. Fortunately I got a few people to read it over, including my brother, who did end up pointing out where the original article may have been unhelpful and then decided to rewrite most of it based on their feedback. -

Ok thank you for your honesty, James! I am definitely not trying to claim that journaling is better or good enough. Just a good gateway to therapy if anyone chooses to go that far. -

I'm working on completely rewriting it right now, so depending on the time anyone clicks on the link, it may not reflect the old incarnation that received all the negative criticism that prompted me to rewrite in the first place. Any feedback on either incarnation will still be greatly appreciated! -
was this supposed to be satire or are you serious?

Hey everybody! I would like to share with you my latest blog post where I write about the importance of journaling, and how to use the practice as a gateway to self knowledge. Your thoughts and feedback would be much appreciated, especially if you are even more well versed in journaling than I am and would like to add aspects of it to the post in a form of leaving a comment either here, or preferably on the blog post page. Tiny Tweak with fdrpodcasts.com

Reconnect with friend collegue without loosing her respect
MysterionMuffles replied to Bradley's topic in Self Knowledge
What would it mean to lose her respect, and why is her respect so important? -
I'm not sure if I'm just missing the option for this, but I noticed that when a podcast is finished--and since I guess it's how they are listed--the PRIOR podcast is played instead of the next one. I suggest a tweak so that autoplay goes UPWARD in the list since that's where podcasts go forward. For instance, I was listening to Screw the Rules Part 1, and instead of going up to play part 2, it went down to play Why Libertarianism Fails Part 3. Obviously I could easily choose to play part 2 but for people who have it playing while doing other things, I think it'd be useful to have it programmed that way if possible.
