Final Fantasy X: A tragic story of child abuse
Culain replied to Culain's topic in Reviews & Recommendations
I listened to one of Stefs movie interpretations and thought I'd try dissecting some of the stuff I watch or play. Forum needs more geeks. -
There will be spoilers, this is a brilliant game. This has always been my favourite final fantasy game and a personal favourite by many, but a lot of people hate it for it's whiny MainCharacter. The main struggle of the story is of the broken relationship between the main character named Tidus and his father Jecht, and the secondary relationship of a Girl who feels obligated to family and societies wants. There are many other relationships in the story but this post will just go over Tidus and his Father. Feel free to play the game to see the others, the HD remake is soon coming out for sale. The story begins with Tidus having recently become a young professional athlete at the popular physical sport of Blitzball(Kind of a soccer mix football type of sport). Tidus' goal is to become 'The Best'. Jecht was a professional athlete, he was considered to be the 'The Best' at Blitzball. But fame overtook him and became arrogant. Only performing to showoff. He ending up wedding a fan of his who was only shallow enough to want the popularity as well. At some point she became pregnant and Jecht fell Alcholism and his career began to tank. When Tidus was born his mother showed no interest in him as she tried to maintain a broken marriage. Jecht being stressed out would take it out on his child by beating him and taunting about how good at the sport he still is. Tidus felt abandoned as a child and tried to regain the love of his family by being The Best at his fathers sport. And then his mother died... Of course in order to be a final fantasy game, there must be fantasy elements. I'll try my best to keep it focused on only Tidus and Jecht. I will also just remove all the fantasy elements leaving the rest up to interpretation. Last chance to leave before major Spoilers - - - In the middle of one of his games 'SIN' appears. SIN is Tidus' father coming in a monstrous rage causing wreckage everywhere. Tidus is devastated and runs away from home where he meets a young girl named Yuna. Yuna was a very shy girl whom was trying to conform to the obligations placed on her by family and society. Tidus fell in love with this girl at first site and traveled all over with her and her own friends. Tidus having found a new circle of friends is overjoyed to be with them and comes to live in the house they share. They travel everywhere together until Tidus has a run in with his father which resulted into an abusive situation. Tidus continued to stay away from home and eventually has sex with Yuna. During this time his father became ill and is on his deathbed, likely from alcohol poisoning. Tidus wants both himself and his girlfriend to be accepted by his father and meets Jecht lying in the hospital on his deathbed. Tidus breaks into tears about how he never got the chance to properly prove himself by beating his father at blitzball, also with the support of his friends he confronts his father about SIN, which was the abuse he received as a child and wanting acceptance. In the end of a very emotional struggle his father admits that he was a terrible father and that had no idea how to raise a son or stop the harm he caused. Jecht apologizes with the last of his strength and gives the couple acceptance before passing away. Tidus is then assaulted with a wide arrange of emotions pertaining to the death of his father. Yuna confronts each of these emotions and does her best to calm each of them. In the end Tidus informs Yuna that he is leaving despite still loving her; he needed time to collect his thoughts together. After a tearful farewell he disappears into the world. The game shortly concludes. ***FFX2 is a sequel which was later released to show the remainder of the story from the girls point of view in her search to find her boyfriend.*** ---- Thoughts?

There was an episode of House where they do a segment on this. Basically the Boyfriend has not had sex with the girlfriend yet the girlfriend is pregnant. She denies having sex with anyone else and claims to be a virgin, but it's an obvious lie. House in one of the few times in the whole series lies with his results and declares the woman to be a virgin to save the couples relationship.

Stefan did an episode on this: -
Hello Everyone Culain here, Recently I was invited to see this Japanese Animated film by a few new friends, apparently it's a really popular series. I watched a few episodes of it in the past but never really thought to much about it, but this movie was very deep. Even though i labeled this as a review, it's probably more akin to an examination of society from a libertarian teenager's perspective. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7u8RbWSp_XU The basic plot or idea of the story is of a group of 5 teenage girls whom transform into magical girls to fight "Nitemare's", Nitemare's are created from emotionally unstable individuals in society whom seek to harm others. The movie begins with the cast of 5 girls healing the emotional ails of a highschool girl whom here parents had neglected. As the movie progresses, Homura recognizes that her friends have this amnesia which is causing them to forget the past. Madoka is seen as the youngest and most innocent girl, she has a very loving family and her father is a stay-at-home dad. Homura shares the consistent logical qualities of an Anarcho Athiest which makes her very attuned to Madoka's innocence. However, accompanying Madoka is this small white fox entity called "Kyuubi". Kyuubi plays the part of obligation in Madoka's life, manipulating how she acts, almost like Kyuubi is personified as Government. Homura wanting to protect Madoka finds Kyuubi to be dangerous and struggles to remove Kyuubi from Madoka. As the five friends hang together Homura notices this creature called "Bebe" which accompanies Tomoe (one of the friends). Bebe however seems to be a catalyst to causing amnesia between the friends, making them forget/ ignore the danger in society. Homura sees Bebe for what it truly is, "culture". In order to protect Madoka from Tomoe's culture she ferociously battles against it, reality changes into a Nitemare as they begin their arguments. Two people who were once friends ferociously attack eachother. Tomoe becomes increasingly more emotional as Homura attacks her culture and Homura's final argument seems to catch Tomoe off guard causing her a brief moment of self-reflection. Sayaki witnesses this argument and question's Homura's approach, blaming Homura for insensitive about the truth. Sayaki reveals her position as a Minarchist when she offers to Homura a simple life of fighting Wraiths (symptoms) rather than the Witches (Root of problems). Sayaki threatens to end their relationship if Homura continues to push. The next day Homura is deeply troubled, she can't help but ponder over the fate of Madoka as she see's all these zombies in society lifelessly falling prey to Witches. Homura discovers that the Kyuubi has been propagating the cycle of these witches. As Kyuubi surrounds Madoka Homura begins to surrender seeing her actions as futile. Homura begins to doubt her abilities and start hating the fact that she can see through the delusion, she regrets taking the red pill. Faced with an extreme level of doubt and hopelessness, Homura wants to return to a life of delusion like the others, but her pride can not allow her. After one last heartfelt apology and goodbye, Homura attempts a sort of suicide. Homura becomes a Witch, she falls into complete despair and lashes out with all her emotions. As Homura is on the brink of death she pictures Madoka one last time, but Kyuubi invades her mind. Give up, give up, give up, he taunts her. That's when Homura remembers her friends, sure they might have different views but they all truly mean the best of intentions for each-other. Homura recognizes the futility of in-fighting and re-focuses her attention to Madoka; she will not abandon her friend. Homura discards the blue pill and awakens to a new level of maturity. She calls herself a demon (Anarchist) because that's how others will view her, but she's content with her image. Homura remembers her intention towards Madoka and informs that she loves her and that she will not force Madoka to accept her views but believes through reason and evidence Madoka will one day discover the same truths as her. The movie closes out with Homura resting on a Hillside. Kyuubi is there on the ground, torn, ragged, beaten. Homura informs the Kyuubi that she will never let him taint the innocent Madoka. The End. --------------- Anyways, I highly recommend watching it. There was another friend of their's in the Movie, Sakura. Unfortunetly I had to step out of the theater to the washroom during her spotlight in the movie so i can`t make an comments on her role. Kyuubi= Government Bebe= Culture Witches= Problems Wraiths= Symptoms of problems Nitemares= Emotional arguments/ despair Demon- Anarchist Homura- Anarchist/athiest Sayaki- Minarchist Tomoe- Theist Madoka- Innocent Child I would also like to point how Homura`s Image. She is characterized as this shy bookworm in public. She wears glasses and remains both quiet and observant. But when Homura battles against her friends, she transforms into a very sharp, assertive, and aggressive character. She even ditches her glasses. A few other things to note, is that this event called the Walpurgis is mentioned in the film as a great coming and unstoppable calamity. It inferred the idea of an election to me.

I don't really understand how you can be a gnostic about a deity that does not intervene, there would have to be some evidence of it intervening for you for you to feel certain about. In my teenage years I would of classified myself as a agnostic deist, I had this thought that God was dead or left us to build another planet in the universe. But the thing was, I just had no evidence to support that idea. I could not logically sustain it and switched to atheist. Sure the earth and human life may be very complex and we definitely don't have anywhere near all the answers but i don't don't think that's a good enough reason to think, "complexity=higher power". If you've ever watched the short flick "iPencil" it gives a basic understanding that something as simple as a man-made pencil is incredibly complex to make, there may only be a handful of people in the whole world who could walk you through all of the 100+ steps/ We don't have to understand how everything works; instead of creating answers (higher power) I think it's best to be gnostic about what we DO KNOW. A modest position for Anarchists.
-
Ok this will be my final question here, and it shouldn't too hard. Our short debate was mostly based on "Where would Deism be on this Chart?" Your position is that it is directly placed in the center. My position is that it is the same as Theist on where it stands with the chart. So there would be a Agnostic Deist in the bottom left: "There MAY be a higher power, but I'm not really sure." and, a Gnostic Deist in the bottom right: "I believe there is a higher power, and I'm certain of it's existence." "Do either of those quoted positions fall into your belief of Deism?" If not, "Can you offer a defining text/sentence which will describe where Deism stands?"
-
Government is another Religion, and Religion is another Government Program. There really is no alliance between theism and atheism, it's better to think that two opposing enemies are coming together to take out the current great threat called Government. I watch a lot of content Tom Woods, Jeffrey Tucker, and many other Christian's because they have "some" really good arguments but at the end of the day as an atheist I could not consider them a friend because they hold some very destructive beliefs. Can you explain in more detail? Are you talking about the Non-Aggression Principle (NAP) or the Bible here?
-
My one question with that video (and the most crucial one) which host did not bring up. "What is the difference between a God and a Higher power?" Let's throw out specific religious interpretations of God, like the Abrahamic God. Instead what does "God" mean? The usual definitions you see here are Omnipotence and Omniscience. These terms are self contradictory, they can't exist in our natural understanding of the world. In other words a "higher power". "What is a Higher Power?" Can you define it? I see it meaning the exact same thing as God. I don't see a different method of measuring it. Basically Higher Power/supernatural= God Deism= Theism --- So I'm still only seeing 3 positions: Theism/Deism= Both claim a Higher Power, that has properties outside of our natural world. Agnostic= Uncertain, lacking evidence, no absolute knowledge claim can be made yet Atheist= No supernatural, no higher power

Holiday seasons always bring out the worst in me, I'm reminded of so many events both good and bad. You see all the holiday propaganda, all the families united together and then you look at yourself, knowing that you will never enjoy this. My family was not there for me during the most vulnerable time of my life... Every year around the holiday season my parents will find a way to contact me through message and tell me about how now that it's the holiday season let's come together as a family, let's talk about all YOUR problems they say; having never offered an apology themselves. Your sisters, you're bothers, your grandma, your uncle, and me all LOVE you; it bombards me every year. Why is it only during the commercial holiday season that you feel the need to become a family, where was everyone throughout the rest of the year? You eventually learn that it's because they don't actually care for you; but rather this hollow shell or husk, to only appear like a family. I just never know what to do any longer. I harken back to my childhood and all I remember is emptiness. My family never tried to understand me, they never listened to me. It was always just do what we say... I was always so scared and holed up all my life, there was always so much in fighting in my family. As a child I would hide in my room and listen in horror as my brothers, sisters, mother, and step-father would enter these wild tangents, they would rage at each other for hours. "Your boyfriend's a failure", they would say to my sister, "your girlfriend is a whore" they would say to my older brother. I remember from that point on I promised I would never bring anyone home, to this day as I approach my 30s I have never been in a relationship. I've always felt that I just never had enough self worth. I also remember that my family was dying financially, though i think i was the only sibling that recognized this. My older brother would receive the fancy sports car, my younger brother would go to private school, my sister would get everything she wanted... how could i ask for anything when I was worried about bankruptcy at home, to this day I have never asked for a single Christmas present in my life. Sorry about the tangent, it's just really tough on me.

Sorry my point was that there was no difference between theist and deist, they mean the exact same thing even if people may characterize one to belong with organized religion and the other unorganized religion because of culture. The three viable positions on God are: Theism/Deism, Agnosticism, and atheism. I don't believe Gnosticism can be used because it says you're making a knowledge claim for or against theism. But an Agnostic is the undecided position so it can't fit completely into Theism or Atheism; thus it gets the 3rd spot.
-
Um no, theos and deus are just the words for God(s) in separate languages Funny and Bunny are from the same language with two different meanings. So the example that should of followed was: Bunny = Lapin (french word for bunny). theos does not mean organized religion. deus does not mean organized religion. Organized religion is attributed to theos because more people who spoke Greek lived in a organized religion's culture.
-
Here's some terminology -Theist: The, theos = God. ist= belief in "Belief in God" -Deist: Deus= God. ist= belief in. "Belief in God" -Atheist: a= without/absent. the, theos= God. ist= belief in. "Without a belief a in God" Theist= Deist. --- -Gnostic: Gnost= knowledge claim ic= pertaining "Pertaining to have knowledge claim" -Agnostic: a= Without gnost: knowledge claim ic= pertaining to "Pertaining to have no knowledge claim" Agnostic is the middle ground

I remember Stefan pointing out in one of his pod-casts about how there are many famous Philosophers who did not go through Academia. Anybody willing to compile a list of some of these Philosophers?
-
I listed this earlier in my first post that we (people in society) don't use the term rights unless there is a burden. If there is no burden you will never hear the term "right". I want you to think up as many "rights" as you can, you should be able to come up with a hundred in a few minutes. ANY action that you perform (voluntary or involuntary) which is not coercive to another is a right, like picking my nose. No, they are limited by time, energy, and location for example. All resources sound a bit vague. A resource is anything of subjective value. All of the resources which people have spent time and energy on are monopolized because people invested in them. What you seem to want is the profit off another's investment. You could acquire and use these same resources if you invest your own time and energy into obtaining them but because there is so much investment in them already you will have to build a lot of investment to your name.

No, it's just a suggested rule when conversing to promote a better exchange. When speaking many people often use swearwords as "verbal ticks" or a way to place extra emphasis on points. On message boards, there is no direct real time issues so swearing can be completely avoided by spending an extra second to think of a better alternative term. However the swear I used was part of a quotation to build accuracy. It's mostly about the intention of using the term.
-
Boris, I think a better way to look at rights is to replace the term with: "Privileges." I'm also kind of insulted that you called me a Nihilist because I said that these terms need to be carefully defined because Mike and myself probably have a different idea of what a "right" is compared to whatever you think they are.
-
Like mike said, you should probably define rights because many libertarians like myself don't believe in rights. For example: Rights only exist in the presence of force. You only have a right to speak if someone can forcefully take it away from you, you only have a right to education if it's taken by force from another. We don't ponder about, do we have the right to Hop up and down, do we have the right to every normal thing we do? We only ponder about actions/rights which others have the ability to enforce.

I purchased the pink t-shirt from Adam, "Being offended is fucking bullshit" with a middle finger dead in the center. The shirt lasted 2 months before the colour washed away and now it's grey.... T_T

I believe there was a city in the US that was considering passing a law to make swearing illegal. Adam Kokesh got a bunch of spotlight in the media for talking about it.
