  1. Sorry for not replying there has been some interesting points that I have thumbed up thanks guys.
  2. I am currently backpacking in australlia and like most backpackers I am doing farm work which can be great and I have made good money in the past but there is also a large darker side to the industry. Before beginning my tale of woe let me start by painting a picture. For most countries to get a working visa in Australia it is easy for the first year, to get the second year you need to have done atleast 3 months of rural work which mostly consists of farm working and packing of fruit veg and meat. Only tax paying farms will give visa days as your name has to go through their books for you to be able to get them signed off. Many farms will use contractors to lessen their paper work and reduce their cost but contractors take their cut which is fair enough but like farmers they don't always put everything through the books. The minimum wage in australlia is rediculesly high in comparison to other countries (and like all minimum wages counter productive) this means that allot of farm work is peice rate as it's easier to say we did less hours and pay us less when people are on contract. Farm work particularly fruit picking and vegetables still has an suprisingly large amount of manual physical labour let's take vineyards as example I have done many of these jobs: Fruit dropping - cutting out the smaller bunches of grapes of fruit that will spoil the wine as they won't be ready in time for picking - normally hourly. Picking - largely done by hand although there are machines that can be used on older vines but these are rarely used from what I have seen - normally payed contract. Leaf plucking - done by hand to expose the grapes to sunlight to help them ripen but not too much to scotch them - normally hourly. Prunning - cutting the vines into the right shape to produce good grapes in good quantities without damaging the vine - high skilled usually payed hourly but contract is becoming more popular (still the pay is usually fair). Bucket boy - payed hourly yes usually given to boys highly desirable job for backpackers much better pay then picking. Lifting 10kg buckets of grapes of the floor and into a trailer taking the pickets ticket out so the pickers get payed for what they do. Wire lifting - lifting the wires up as the vine grows to help support it quite physical usually payed contract but sometimes hourley. Can be done by machine for the older vines but usually not Netting - dragging nets by hand from a tractor in the middle that moves slowly to stop birds eating the grapes. Very physical usually payed hourley. Those are the ones I remember of the top of my head I had a great time on vineyards earnt good money and due to my hard work ethic I was quickly promoted to bucket boy and fruit dropper instead of picking as that's where the money was - great . Then I moved to apples on contract good money I made $180 Aus on my best day picking around 2.5tons of apples. The contactor didn't give me my visa days and my last couple days pay. We had to live in terrible conditions 2 showers between 25 people and just generally unclean conditions. Still all that is to be expected as a backpacker. In this place I also pruned some peach trees at the low rate of $14aus hourley which was ok. Now the story begins to become darker. I read an add for prunning peach trees with loppers and secateurs I had done this before and so had the people I was travelling with so we got the job no probem. The agent got good reviews and seemed like a fair guy. We were told by the contractor that the pay would be hourley or better by contract. He owned a large caravan park and we had to stay there to get the work we had to pay a weeks rent $150 each up front (4people in my caravan) and a deposit of $75 each that we need to give a weeks notice for to get back. We all had very little money at this point and I mean very litle all the jobs in the area were either taken or you had to go through a working hostel such as we did. The job is mentally tiring each cut is important it's like a 3d brain training game. For most blisters on hands from the cutting was common luckily I had done it before and thus been through the blister stage with stronger hands physically too. It's hot in the part of australlia I was at plus it was 3 degrees warmer under the big net we worked under. Spider bites were daily as common as a mosquitoe bite luckily nothing too dangerous usually the same symptoms as a mosy bite. Our first day of work we pruned about 40-60 trees each but the pay wasn't hourley or even close to better on contract it was only $1 per tree and we had worked 8hours with only 2 short breaks. We couldnt earn enough to pay rent never mind save money to leave. As we couldn't afford to pay rent they put up the price 2 times $1.3 then $1.5 still we struggled to pay rent and food but that is where the price stayed we were trapped if we didn't get help from back home we would have been stuck there. I'm not saying we need the state to stop this more competition would easily change this but if I didn't get help from home the likely course of action would have been running to the state In one form or another. There are no win no fee companies to help backpackers as this type of thing is all to common but they use the state to get the money. If you found yourself in this position what would you have done with no option of loans ect? Yes I shouldn't have got myself in that position we should always have enough money to leave a job and that is why I am no longer travelling with those people when we move to the next place I will stay a long time I will find a good job earn some money and then do things on my bucket list. Instead of what we had done before struggled in each location finally find a good job and work there only a few weeks before moving on.
  3. The eu to function in the same way needs the uk they are 1 of the 2 countries (maybe 3 dunno how france is doing) that make a net positive contribution all the other countries apart from germany take money. If the uk left it would change the eu allot but i bet the uk would still end up paying money to the eu.
  4. The conservatives won the elections in the UK, why am I talking about this in Libertarian section or even at all as a libertarian myself you may be asking. (I didn't vote I am in Australia but even if I was in the Uk I don't think I would have voted) Well this is interesting to me as it means presuming they don't go back on their word there will be a vote to stay or leave the EU. When this referendum happens the results could indicate the people's preference to be ruled over or to be (more) free. Like I said I don't normally vote but for this referendum I think I just might as leaving the EU would be a step in the right direction, in my opinion. What are your thoughts on this?
  5. With this topic you could even get into the argument about the idea of time I mean there is logic in the Callander but it's a man made concept. I mean you shouldn't need an excuse to meet up with loved ones and have a great time but birthdays seems to be a way of achieving this.
  6. Journaling and trying to be aware of what's going on in the moment helps me if I understand you correctly, more details and examples would be good to help us understand.
  7. Yeah in this sense I agree the island would be better, in my mind I'm unsure how realistic it is though.
  8. I like the idea but one things for sure the state wouldnt sit back and watch. We would get branded as tax avoiders they would try and block our trade. They would claim that we have declared economic war and try to justify using force against us. I actually think sumalia with an army would be the better option. An army to defend ourselfs from the locals initially and the rest of the world later on.
  9. Would it be fair to say that you suffer with anxiety about day to day things and you use games to avoid doing things to avoid the feeling of anxiety? Or/and You are unhappy with your current situation and you use games to help you ignore this / to make you feel better about yourself. Have you tried journaling, self knowledge is important in philosophy and this is a good route to better self knowledge. As always I would recommend therapy but importantly with the right therapist.
  10. As someone who has a degree in business I should know more about this than I do but I confess I know very little about this... http://www.investopedia.com/articles/basics/03/020703.asp might shed some light on this I didn't read it but I did use this website when I was studying. The only advantage I could think of is that banks would watch the stock value and make lending choices from this. If a company has more access to capital it could if used correctly use that money to invest in something (in better machinery for example) that reduces the cost per unit that saving could then be pased down to the consumer in one shape or another depending on the strategy of the company. Or the investment could be used to improve quality ect... In a free market I cannot imagine the stock market working in the way that it currently does I mean this unlimited liability stuff is just not free market economics or atleast not in my mind.
  11. You are more than welcome, could you expand on the life coaching what will it include and why would you prefer this compared to therapy? You are an adult now a young adult but an adult non the less you always have choices but with choices have consequences. Like you said you could move out and get a job so this fear of conflict is a consequence of staying at home. I'm not saying this is what you should do but I think it is important to know your options this helps in decision making. Please I can't stress this enough if you are even considering this see a therapist before making decisions. Another option is to move into a hostel (a working hostel if possible) there are many of these in Australia which is where I am now but I don't know about your location. There you will not be alone and you can learn how to save money and other life skills plus there will be tips on how to get the best jobs (first jobs rather than long term jobs). People come and go so it's a good way to practice interacting with people in a curious way. This wouldn't really be a long term option I mean these places attract unstable people but at least everyone knows that all relationships are voluntary this option would be more of a stepping stone, at least in my opinion. Right now with your father you are manipulating or managing his mood by presuming (probably correctly as you know him very well) that there will be negative consequences and thus you don't speak with him about this. I am not criticising I know this is very hard I am just pointing this out. Life is much more fun when you stop trying to manage people and just be curious and make choices based on their responses. Your an adult now you are in control of your life. You may have very good reason to do this at the moment but being aware of your current situation is also important in decision making.
  12. Welcome to the board man, unlike many forums this community is quite forgiving so get involved if you have time . I'm currently backpacking in aus and I'm quite near to you so if there is a meet up in Perth that would be cool if not I'm going to Melbourne in a month I think .
  13. There is a podcast in the bronze section on whole topic of conspiracy stories which you might find interesting. Edit: here is a link - https://board.freedomainradio.com/files/file/131-conspiracy-theorists/
  14. ( I was unsure where to put this, so sorry if this is not the appropriate place) In a recent podcast 2886 the second caller if my memory serves me correctly was interested in setting up a edible landscape gardening business. Stefan correctly made the case for market research and questioned why current businesses were not doing this already which may make my suggestion irrelevant. If the caller is still interested in doing this or doing it in the future then I have a possible suggestion. Involve children in your marketing efforts, if you can get children interested in planting/growing (healthy) vegetables then I think this would strongly motivate some parents to ask for a quote. This could be done in your backyard have an open day with a bbq targeted at families teach the children how to plant a seed ect get them interested in how the plant will grow, get them interested in the idea of eating something that they have helped plant. Show the parents what your raised beds look like and what you can do for them. I could go on but I think you get the idea. You could even take it a step further and do something at a local school, kids love growing stuff and if you did a raised bed or 2 for the school for free or heavily discounted then you could maybe have your brand on the side of the bed and get a letter to each parent about what your doing ect. I have no idea of the costs so you would have to make sure your marketing is an investment rather than a cost but get creative with it. Anyways I hope this will get read by the caller and if not maybe inspire someone who is thinking of setting up any business to try and think a bit differently in terms of marketing, it's a good way to stand out if you do it correctly. If anyone knows the caller if you could point them in the direction of this thread then that would be great. Have a good day guys .
  15. I don't think your crazy it happens but don't let it get you down you could thank them for waving the red flag so obviously. Some of it might come down to biology I mean men need to spread their seed in terms of biology for a woman pregnancy for her carries allot more risk so they are more choosy. Having said all that it doesn't give them a valid reason to act the way you describe. Your biggest selling point should be your virtue if they are not curious about that then I wouldn't be too curious about them.
  16. Hi welcome to the forums, shirgall has given some great replies in my opinion. One of the first things I did when I started this journey (which admittedly I'm still in the early stages of) is start therapy and is one of the best things I've done / still doing. I know this doesn't answer any of your questions but I just wanted to add this in here. A few tips that might be relevant: You said your shy there will be reasons for this which are worth exploring in depth but in the meantime remind yourself your an adult the anxiety/fear/conflict avoidance was useful to you as a child it stopped you getting hit as much or worse but you are no longer a child. Your not going to die. Be gentle and patient with yourself, explore things, journaling is great for this. Try and be aware of what's going on as much as possible in the moment. Be curious when talking to your parents (or anyone for that mater) the likely hood is you will want to manipulate their response. You don't have to do anything you really don't but there are things that will be helpful and things that will be quite the opposite, its up to you to discover these truths and make choices based upon them, take your time, see a therapist before making big decisions.
  17. I'm quite into the idea of artificially grown meat and fish and could see it being cheaper eventually once the whole process is automated it would be like growing a crop. If we can grow individual organs (which I think we have done) we could potentially only grow certain favourable cuts of meat rather than the whole thing. Regarding the morals of it even if it was a whole fish not a problem for me. With animals I would always seek to take a more moral high ground and reduce suffering if possible within reason but that is my choice I guess, for example I try to buy free range but I don't sweat if I don't from time to time. Ethics are universal I can't do that with animals they can't with me, morals are my choice and I won't force them on anyone else but if I saw someone beating a dog I would try and stop it without the initiation of force. I know some people are really against gm food aswell (there is allot of misinformation out there) but I'm not and I think it could make it super tasty. I'm not sure on how to allocate ownership but I think ownership is important in terms of overfishing. If there is a solution the free market is the quickest and maybe even the only path to it. For me the problem isn't so much how to controls our resources such as the sea and the fish in it but when we stop increasing population exponentially I think that's the elephant in the room that is getting ignored. It is something I might make a topic about as it's interesting to me.
  18. For me personally kind of a bit of both. I tend to start by exploring how I am feeling right now and then exsplore how I felt during the day (what stimulated it was it proportional or a trigger, was my reaction helpful, ect) then what ever comes to mind I also try and write about atleast one positive thing too. I tend to use a computer to journal if something new pops into my head before I finish writing about the previous thing I press return a few times make a note of it and continue to exsplore what I was before and come back to what popped into my head afte. You could do the same with writing I guess if you have a separate sheet for notes. I struggled to know how to journal perhaps I still do a little (I find myself correcting spellings some of the time lol). My therapist said to me when I brought up the subject that it is very personal and there is no set way to do it try things and see what works best for you, read how other people do it but don't feel you have to copy the way they do it exactly. One thing I do is try and be kind to myself rather than hard on myself when journaling. Might not exactly answer your question but might be useful is this link https://board.freedomainradio.com/topic/42197-i-have-published-my-first-book-dear-self/
  19. (im on my phone so won't be quoting) A few things came to mind when reading your reply to my post and others. Have you considered the idea that you might be a perfectionist? I am with certain aspects of my life, be careful if your answer is no and then compare yourself with someone else who you think is as that is kind of what perfectionist do. You are very hard on yourself which is common for perfectionists and this doesn't come from nowhere. (presuming I'm right...) Who are you trying to be a perfectionist for? This leads me onto my next question your going to university that's a great opertunity to meet people and learn about yourself and other things. Are you going to uni for yourself or to please someone else? Even if it is to please someone else it doesn't mean you shouldn't do it but to make the most out of uni you need to be doing it for the right reasons not to please someone else. What do you think about uni, how do you feel about the idea any worries regarding it? How where you allowed to exspress your emotions as a child? (Edit my mobile was low on battery so didn't get chance to say everything) I think it would be beneficial to start praising yourself when you do good things even if it's small, you can alwas fall back on remembering to try and praise yourself if you can't think of anything. Its not easy I know this first hand but it is worth the struggle.
  20. Hi there, a few quick questions, you don't have to answer them here but they might be worth considering: 1) Do you journal (if so how often?) 2) Do you see a therapist? 3a) You mentioned you have no drive at the moment, has this always been the case? 3b) Have you relied on external pressure such as deadlines and people pestering you to do things rather than motivating yourself to do it? 4a) You say you feel numb, what is your current situation (living arrangements, job, relationships ect...)? 4b) Try and be aware of emotions you may be suppressing them, anger for me was one of the things that I suppressed, what might you be suppressing? 5) When is the last time you praised yourself for doing something well or handling something better than you would have previously? 6) Have you considered a change of environment? Sometimes we associate certain places with certain moods and this can be hard to get past, if moving is too extreme even going outside for a short walk can really help. I am quite early in my journey but I think these questions above are worth exploring I fully recommend a therapist it will (if you get the right one) fast track you on your journey as long as you put a bit of effort in. Journaling is very useful although I myself would benefit from doing this more which I hope to start doing soon as I am changing my environment. When your doing self work sometimes it can seem like a explosion of thoughts and its hard to process it all never mind benefit from it. Journaling is useful in this case to stop you going round in circles and a therapist can help you home in on certain aspects and bring up things that you hadn't previously considered.
  21. The gold standard vs bitcoin reference was to show how innovation can make previous ideas pretty redundant. The question at the end was a rhetorical question to make a point not open a new discussion... ... Exactly this is one (and probably the best way to do it) you are selling the ticket to be first / one of the first within the market.
  22. Greetings welcome to the forums. Thanks for donating and helping support something that I care about - the spreading of philosophy and NAP/UPB.
  23. I could attempt to answer that - Without a patent all you are selling is the value of being first to sell your product within the market. The value that this would give is probably smaller to what Jean thinks he is entitled to as he lives in a world with patients, when you take something away it is common for people to feel t"hey are getting a bad deal" / "it isn't fair". JeanPaul Ideas are only worth the first to market advantage, unless you are willing to do the rest of the entrepreneurial work or form a partnership with someone (where you think of the ideas and they do the rest of the work) of course the amount to which you can profit from an idea is rightfully quite limited. An alternative way to make money from an idea without the third party threat of force is as follows - Contact the big guys in the manufacturing industry and draw up a contract with all of them to how much they would be interested in paying you upfront or per unit sold for a pre-agreed length of time. This would only be more profitable than the first to market advantage if the markets price elasticity is such that cheaper or better products would result in significantly higher profits and thus the big guys would be willing to pay for this perhaps not as much as you like but whats that got to do with anything. For this to be possible the market would probably need quite big (non aggressive) barriers to entry such as investment, infrastructure and brand loyalty ect. At the end of the day the people driving the demand for innovation should be the consumers if the consumers want better things you could determine the value of an idea through crowd funding you could even team up with other inventors of different parts if the end product is complex like a car or a computer so customers make a stronger link to what they are supporting and thus are likely to give more. This is what comes to my mind right now and what I have said could very well be invalidated by future innovation heck if it wasn't for bit coin I personally would be asking for the gold standard in a currency for a free society... My ideal goal isn't to have the best tech it is to live in a society without the initiation or threat of force this might very well come at the cost of having slower innovation when we remove the artificial (can only be achieved through force) increased value of ideas - patents. I would argue that the free market would more than make up for this in other ways due to more market freedom allowing more competition which is the breading place for innovation. Should we keep inflation as it artificially increases the rate at which consumers spend their money because their money is always loosing value?
  24. hmmm cant find the one I was talking about (wouldn't surprise me if it got took down because of DOXing...). So it was a female or a male calling in? How about this talking about fetishes: 55:20 OR Sexual Pleasure, Punishment and Self-Protection: 1:49:34
  25. It might be premium content now there is a podcast in the bronze section called: Sexual Obsession Think I have already listened to this one but will listen again and see if its a call in... edit: Yes it is a call in show (yes I have listened to it) starts with a guy saying apologizing about not doing helping with the website like he said he would... does that ring any bells? Thats not the one but was it a female caller and did she slowly reveal it all, she had been involved in a threesome and was into bondage? If so I think I remember that one and will try and find it if not will let someone else try
