  1. At school we reenacted the trial of Socrates. That gave the participants a good introduction to his ideas.
  2. Due to the public attention, the inquisitor and the university both apologized. https://wlu.ca/news/spotlights/2017/nov/open-letter-to-my-ta-lindsay-shepherd.html https://wlu.ca/news/spotlights/2017/nov/apology-from-laurier-president-and-vice-chancellor.html https://globalnews.ca/video/3867811/extended-excerpts-from-secretly-recorded-meeting-between-wilfrid-laurier-university-grad-student-and-faculty https://globalnews.ca/video/3867809/wilfrid-laurier-ta-says-university-censored-her-for-showing-clip-on-gender-pronouns?utm_source=Article&utm_medium=Outbrain&utm_campaign=2015
  3. It would contradict the Austrian theory of Boom and Busts according to which Central Banks play a huge role. If you look at reality however, fiat money creation from private banks via credit plays a much larger role.
  4. How does that follow?
  5. The only thing missing from btc being even more succesful and used as a method of payment is it's own success. Member the guy who bought pizza for several btc some years ago? Today, nobody wants to be the guy so nobody actually uses btc to pay for items. Why would you spend money that grows valuable more and more each week?
  6. Sounds like a great book to read. Thanks for the recommendation.
  7. Imagine two groups of animals. One has the fight or flight mechanism, the other one doesn't have it. Which group of animals is more likely to survive? Mammals don't pass on epigenetic infromation. Later, not so primal responses are also largely genetic. At least in the way that information is processed. The current most accepted theory among neuro scientists ist the modular brain hypothesis. Koestler is an amazing author with a lot of foresight. I enjoyed every one of his books, especially Darkness at Noon.
  8. People shape the political systems they live under, not the other way round. Liberia has the adopted the Constitution, but the country is still a complete shitshow as one would expect.
  9. What is your evidence that this is the case?
  10. Baumeister researched willpower in a scientifc way and gives recommendations how to improve it.
  11. Willpower requires repetition, because it can be trained. In order to possess willpower it's greatly beneficial to read the book by Roy Baumeister.
  12. What have you learned so far? You can become a certified LPIC admin by learning a lot on the subject and then taking a test. No idea how much that counts where you live, but it's better than nothing. Plus, the books that prepare you for the test aren't that expensive.
  13. It was the casus belli and not the liberation of the slaves. That was used later.
  14. Both approaches are idiotic. Practice White Sharia with warbrides and sister wives.
  15. Haidt proposed a social intuitionist model where we judge first and then come up with justifications later. I fail to see how a lesbian incestuous relationship could affect the offspring. It's even a better example than the one that Haidt proposed: Many people find the act of incest disgusting and then come up for reasons why this is the case. But in this case, it's neither morally wrong since both agreed nor will there be consequences for children.
  16. It was fought to keep the Southern States in the Union. The first National Assembly was instituted so the King could raise additional taxes.
  17. Out of curiosity, have you ever set up a neural network?
  18. So far Crowder, Mitchell and Molyneux didnt't discuss with potholer. He does a good job in representing the mistakes that lay people do in trying to refute the arguments made by climate scientists.
  19. I switched from physics to maths when I noticed that physics was really tedious (for me) and when I realized I liked doing maths a lot more. Nothing is as frustrating as preparing an experiment for weeks for it to fail only because some noob hit your desk and changed the configuration slightly
  20. Grüezi, habe tolle Erinnerungen an die Schweiz. Hab dort (Zürich) eine Weile studiert und gearbeitet.
  21. Without going into much details, I process visual data and (hopefully) reflect on it.
  22. Yes, I have. It misses some important points, like the latifundia and their role in the downfall. Lets pick the 1850s US, there is data available for the costs of living, wages, and slave prices.
  23. It's not. An income tax rate of 35% does not mean that you pay 35% on your income, it refers to the income tax bracket. In reality you pay about 25%. https://www.investopedia.com/terms/t/taxbracket.asp Furthermore, there is no reference provided for the data on slaves. Owning slaves must have been economically beneficial for slave owners. That means, the price for a slave, plus the housing and the food must have been less than hiring a free person for doing the same job. When you hire unskilled labour, the minimum wage you pay has to keep the person alive, or else there would be no incentive in working at all. Furthermore, employing a free person on a farm in the 1850s US included the board plus the wages, as you can see here https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=miun.ajb5449.0001.001;view=1up;seq=164
  24. I know by reading books. The tension is unbearable. When will I see my first monad?
  25. How much income did an average slave have throughout history?
