  1. It is all arbitrary. With the exception of onset puberty 12+ the human matures and continues to mature for many years, but all too often at different rates to each individual. During the forming of the country, people expected an 18 yr old to be fairly self sufficient and if pressed, capable of surviving without assistance.
  2. Culture is a collection of practices that survive. Washing hands, being polite and greeting your neighbor, etc. Some are between man and himself, others are between man and his neighbor.
  3. It would appear that the State coopting education creates a stagnant starting point while the entry to market keeps moving. Machines replicate the precise task many times. But there is clearly unexplored opportunities to create value. Were the state less involved, there would be more room for the community to regulate itself.
  4. I always enjoy this one by Richard Feynman: The Essence of Science
  5. In fact increased ice in polar regions does not disprove Global Warming. Warmer global temperatures would allow the atmosphere to absorb more moisture, and that moisture when it gets close to a pole will inevitably freeze. Global warming is no more a fact than any other prediction i.e., it may be true or false. I am fairly comfortable that any slight warming which may occur would have a minimal impact, especially when compared to any cooling. Either way I have faith we will get thru it whatever happens. A little technology can go a long way in protecting our frail bodies from the elements.
  6. No one seems to disagree, the 1990 model was just wrong. If the scientific community actually dismiss that fact because that model was crude and didn't take into account a number of things... what's to encourage me to believe their next model will be much better? Are they now capable of accounting for all those things? Probably not.
  7. It isn't just physical aggression that creates dominance for men. Eloquence, leadership and productivity allow men to dominate without resorting to violence. Most chimp leaders groom smaller chimps. Larger rats intentionally lose wrestling matches a minority of the time to maintain status quo. The objective is to win more often, even the strongest man can be attacked from behind and subdued. To be sexually selected, a man has to win more than his competitors. Gentle force with a female, tight hugs that don't hurt, show physical capability in excess of her's and solidifies the male's position as protector.
