Can someone explain regression to the mean for IQ?
Jsbrads replied to smarterthanone's topic in Science & Technology
The lack of runaway IQ hasn't happened because 3 generations ago, 99.9% of the population did not pair based on intelligence. That has changed drastically to the point that the vast majority in the West are solely pairing based on intelligence. PhDs marry, McDonald's employees pair, etc. paraphrasing Thomas Sowell -

Kane and Abel, plus cultural references. *Spoilers
Jsbrads replied to RichardY's topic in Atheism and Religion
Genesis 4:3-4 ...Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. Abel didn't innovate, but he tried to give the best. Cain gave regular quality, not the best. -
Kane and Abel, plus cultural references. *Spoilers
Jsbrads replied to RichardY's topic in Atheism and Religion
I don't think Abel claimed all of the air. Cain claimed all the land. Then said Abel wasn't allowed on the land. Had Abel the ability to fly, I doubt even that would have satisfied Cain. -
Rightist opposite of Leftist, vague definition. I don't think everyone should drop atheism, merely challenge it intellectually. So many people accept atheism dogmatically. Strive for the truth with an open mind, don't listen to authority. By definition, the creation of our universe is supernatural. If there is a Creator, that is God. The only question we are debating is whether the universe was created by accident or on purpose.

Aesthetics? what if the child isn't your child? Then lying okay? You haven't told me why it's wrong, only you don't like it. i have never accepted your premise that one has to lie to protect themselves. No comment is always an option. I welcome any new info/arguments, but I think we are just circling now.

Culture Clash Parenting - Middle Eastern/American
Jsbrads replied to Angrywoodchucksblog's topic in Peaceful Parenting
In my family corporeal punishment was regularly dispensed. You MIL behavior seems much like those times my mother realized the punishment was too excessive and she tried to intercede (rarely successfully). Did your FIL punish you BILs when younger? start by getting on the same page with your wife and strategize with her as to best way to speak with your MIL... best of luck, and have another one, best way to mature your girl. -
Good healthy people naturally want to help others even if those others are very damaged. That is perfectly natural, tho probably not the best way to seek your own success in life. once John is in a relationship, it is hard to break out of. But if he gets out, explain that he would be better off with someone who isn't so broken. He will be happier is he can make someone else happy. Hope that helps

Drew, you are right, lying to children is unforgivable. much like abusing children. abusing adults isn't okay, so why is lying to adults okay? Ok Neeel, tell me why I'm wrong

Teenage Rebellion: Bad Parenting or "Just a phase?"
Jsbrads replied to Eudaimonic's topic in Self Knowledge
Children begin individuation at two when they say NO! to everything. Obviously neglect can lead to very bad behavior. But I think that the nuclear family is a failed recent system. The extended family was the model that has lasted thru the ages. i read an article of a dad saying how he has learned so much in the first 15 yrs raising his single child, a daughter. What about the grandparents? They are a wealth of information to assist with the raising of young. And when a teen is combative with his/her parents, a cooler head can calm things down. Grandparents were a great resource to the family, torn out of the family by Social Security in the US. -
The rightist is a person who doesn't believe everything he is told. To not believe in God is one of the modern beliefs which contradict millennia of critical (non-scientific) thinking. discarding what was without testing new theories is the definition of Leftism. Dont adopt a mythology. Think about the world around yourself critically and decide which is right (despite what people tell you).

Dr Peterson psychological significance of biblical stories
Jsbrads replied to mgggb's topic in Atheism and Religion
If you wish to change your mind, it isn't that hard. Klavan encourages people to pray everyday for 60 days (I don't know where he gets that time scale) but he says it is effective to make a believer. I haven't tested this myself, being a monotheist. -
Adam and Eve understood right and wrong. Good and evil are emotional elements of right and wrong. the serpent didn't like being commanded by Adam and Eve. He decided to destroy the entire creation for being second to someone else (typical Leftist). Note: They did not abide God's command to eat of all the trees in the garden or they would have been busy eating ordinary apples, peaches, etc., eaten of the tree of Life. Idle hands do the devil's work. Adam was there the whole time watching how Eve would behave. He wasn't emotionally tied to the outcome until he realized he already lost his wife. Jordan Peterson does a more evolutionary analysis.

Kane and Abel, plus cultural references. *Spoilers
Jsbrads replied to RichardY's topic in Atheism and Religion
Kane (Cain) claimed all the land was strictly his. Kane did not ask God why. The original offering was Kane gave some fruits, Abel gave the best. Kane responded by depression, not a logical step for someone stolen from. God initiated an intervention for a guy grumbling about things not going his way. Kane's murder of Abel followed the sacrifices and God's warning that depression can cause the brain to become active in finding enemies that don't exist. -

Judges are often subject to the whims of politicians and the politicians use these tactics to raise funds for the municipality. Most judges know which side of their bread gets buttered and you don't stand a chance with them. I wish I could say the judges care about justice and tell them your story, but I can't. Save the fight for another day. Learn the loopholes you have to leap thru to park there and consider it a lesson.

Much like piano makers in the US & Russia were of German descent, I'm guessing lens makers in Russia were of German descent. I am not saying it isn't possible for Russians to make things, they probably could have invented lots of stuff if they were free, but they weren't, and most of what they made was based on tech stolen from the US. German aerospace engineers, Ukrainian mathematicians, Romanian scientists... Russia was on the edge of the west. As to southern Chinese being brutish, only according to northern Chinese. China is actually two societies. And always the city more educated than the farms.

In the US (and Canada) Conservative ('C') means conforming to the founding values of the country, our constitution, law and order (while being somewhat open to tried and true established best practices like Free Trade even tho our founders did not know yet how valuable that was). "conservative" does not refer to anything specific and can be used to mean you like Mozart, Pink Floyd, or anything created before Drake. In Europe it means something completely else. Right and Left should mean the same thing everywhere. Oh, and Nazis are on the Left.

Those businesses should be free to hire whoever they like and operate their buildings as they wish and you can exercise your freedom to use their services or not. As to what someone can do perhaps trying to move to an area where people have a similar outlook might be most beneficial I have been trying to move to Texas for a number of years -
