Cavemen didn't spend their time brutalizing each other. They could die from a scratch. the worst murder of men, women and children was always the government. LoL, I'm no Rousseau-ian, yes, there was war and violence. But the common war activity was stealing blankets when the other guy was out hunting. A war party decends on an unguarded village, the women, children and elders don't fight. The raiders take what they want and leave. They didn't have the luxury of real gory battles of mordern times. Were they actually beating on each other, there would be nobody left. "Wars" would last generations or more, with a dozen raids over that period, it would take years for ancient man to recoup any losses of tools or clothing. If it ever reached a real battle, a couple people would die, ending the war. They would have to submit. There is no vast population to draw new recruits from.

Issues with Anarcho-Capitalism, Part 1: Logic
Jsbrads replied to EGreg's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Private property owners cannot violate your Rights (Bill of) that includes barring you from carrying a firearm to protect yourself. Trespassing is really strict if someone says, don't come on my land and then you trespass. If someone allows you on his land and then later asks you to leave, you do have to leave; however, if that is a island in the South Pacific, you aren't committing a crime if you continue to stay on the island until you find a reasonable alternative (island) and method (eg boat) to travel with. While standing on someone's front lawn... you have to walk out to the street. -
Rv, the Uncanny Valley on a spectrum we don't feel threatened by a doll, but as it gets closer to a human, it begins to look similar to a human enough that our mind rebels and tells us something is very wrong... eventually, as something gets closer to perfection tho, them our brain can't distinguish any more and we identify it as normal.

I don't see a benefit to introducing your children to badly behaving people. I hope you and your wife have many nice adult friends and your children have many healthy peers. Forget your blood relatives. You would be better off finding the genetic descendants to whatever Duke your ancestors served and indenturing yourself to them than connecting your children to your parents.

Yes, and those nodes were created by programmers

There is nothing fake looking about this story. nor is scary, or surprising or anything really worth noting outside the computer science world. It is a computer doing what it is programmed to do. Perhaps not what the programmers thought it will do, but what the code actually says. That's why computer programs have to be debugged and go thru many versions and updates. Our meat sack radiators only store so much RAM. And of course most programs today are built by many different people.

Jordan Peterson mentioned in his lecture that most abused children grow up and never want to visit the same on their children. The only problems that arise with that laudable goal are a lack of parenting skills and education. The wider US culture does have some good limits on parents programmed in. And some bad ones still unfortunately.

Peaceful parenting and consequences for undesirable behavior
Jsbrads replied to Rooster's topic in Peaceful Parenting
Best of luck with the show and everything. I put lying in immoral category. I was surprised to be challenged on that and we discussed that in my post Teaching Children to Lie. See there. I do agree that being single, while not your choice, is something for which you are culpable. I don't see arguing that point tho. I am not perfect, and I don't expect you to be perfect 6 yrs ago or now. We don't have discuss any areas you aren't ready to hash out right now or even if willing, if you want to limit the scope of this discussion, I understand that too. I think that you should try to get more positive adults into your daughters life. Certainly not a bunch of girlfriends who show up randomly. Parenting should be your priority. Immediate family is an amazing resource if you have healthy members to draw upon. As to worrying, that does seem to be a natural part of parenting. She does sound very independent, and I have heard advice given praticularly for high energy children, to give them more latitude (especially easy when dealing with one child) and my friend's boy turned out really well (he's an adult now). I am sure Stefan has spoken about dating. I am for it. I don't think you should be a monk. But be careful. Only introduce your daughter when you are sure. My neighbor married a woman with a daughter and things seem to be going well. -
I actually think the violence is particularly worse in single parent homes. One parent has less of an awe factor than a unified front. In particular, teen boys are often less awed by their mothers. I think the violence we see today evolved into being to compensate for the shortage of parents. The weaker the tyrant...

There is a honeymoon period that covers the first 5 yrs of a marriage. Children often happen before or at that mark rather than long after. I also think our parents only try to raise us to adulthood and we have no cultural education for marriage and parenting yet because we used to live in extended families up until 80-140 yrs ago. So parents continued to be around and train wives and husbands how to be and how to parent as well. Anecdotally, I have heard stories of mothers guiding young wives how to be attentive, creating the opportunity for them to make the best of their relationships. Over the phone is great, being around is better. And parents seem to finally get it once their kids are grown (a little late if you ask me).

I'm not sure what Stefan said about parents sharing their arguments with children, but coming from a low class home, I would have rather they argued less in my presence...

Dr Peterson psychological significance of biblical stories
Jsbrads replied to mgggb's topic in Atheism and Religion
Homophobia, intolerance and other negative traits are natural impulses from evolution. Abraham innovated the acceptance of the other. Moses married a Black woman (for non-PC reasons). Im not confused about Jesus being perfect, but I think he had some good ideas too. trying to teach those ideas to murderous Germans really didn't take until 62 yrs ago. Blaming that on modern religion? I'm guessing you prefer the ancient child burning religions or something... huh? -
Did God err in making Adam ruler over Eve?
Jsbrads replied to Gnostic Bishop's topic in Atheism and Religion
Adam isn't granted anything. Eve loses some of her autonomy because of her actions. Also none of this is punishment, but consequence. Put your hand in the fire, it gets burnt. The story is very clear, Eve's desire for the forbidden fruit and her actions created her situation. much like the snake is compensated for his behavior and Adam for his. no free lunch, even in Eden. -
Your world government in Europe is trying to force Eastern Europe to accept "refugees". your Spanish Empire wants to enslave the people of Catalonia. the greatest deaths in human history, by every metric was done by governments. I do support the existence of a military (which may only operate at or outside our borders) and a police force which enforces minimal laws, like investigating murders and arresting people who are violent.

Has anybody done the math?
Jsbrads replied to Ra-89's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
In a freer world, there would be more jobs & wealth. Taxes disincentivize hiring. Government destroys 1/3 of the economy thru taxation. also with everyone at least 1/3 richer, charity would be more available and go where needed. -
A nuclear WWIII will never happen. Dishonor will prevent it.

Castro was willing to let Cuba burn from end to end, if he could have a chance to hurt the US even a little. Kim isn't a better person. -
LoL, Russians would still murder you for a perceived slight. Midwest should be fine, just get a couple of guns, practice shooting and be a good friend, your neighbors will defend you.
-
LoL, yes, your anecdotal experience is how the entire industry operates. AIDs gets passed around the porn industry all the time. Heroine used moderately is also fine? promiscuity is also a bad thing. Being careless around bees is stupid, same with chainsaws, heavy machinery and wildlife in general. Sorry to be so patronizing, but the question up top isn't should we use force to prevent people from doing things we don't like, but is it moral. I'm guessing some people here think we should generally choose to eat healthy, but not use force against someone who has an extra burger. treating your body like crap is still wrong even if you don't steal the money, or beat people over the head with your salami.

Issues with Anarcho-Capitalism, Part 1: Logic
Jsbrads replied to EGreg's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Anarchy State and Utopia by Robert Nozick discusses this in detail. Quickly, in anarchy all the land is still available and people capture land and begin to use it. They agree to a Title based land ownership and divide the land. They can also agree to navigable waters being free acces to all. If there is a resource on my land and I form a tool from it, I can trade that to someone else, for other tools, resources, food, land or even give it away. Alternately imagine a tribe of 100 ppl living on an island of 100 sq miles. They are hunter gatherer. Then one day they discover agriculture and they decide to subdivide their into 100 plots. They find they can quadruple their population and still be better fed than before and further division of plots are still allowed... During the advent of the printing press, Jewish intellectuals were faced with the problem of intellectual property. They concluded that there is no such Right and nicely requested that people allow a new author to sell the books in his First printing so he should not face a loss when creating a benefit for society. -
US Government Failure by Design
Jsbrads replied to Chris hart's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Trump didn't need to destroy Obamacare. He could have left it in place and evicerated it at the same time. First state, the law isn't working. So (1) there can't be any penalties to citizens. And (2) any US citizen can now buy any plan from anywhere in the US until the law is fixed (and since it will never be fixed...) A short time later state, the law is costing more than it was promised to the American people, thus we have to stop the bleeding. Insurers get no money from US Gov. States can do what they want except for bar citizens from purchasing out of state. States won't be getting more money next year. -
I don't think below 50 IQ can give consent to sex. but I don't see a problem with lower intelligence people having children in general. In all likelihood their children will be fine and I'm also a big supporter of larger extended families living together. Libertarian values of our founding fathers were limited government.

Our Constitution doesn't allow for cruel and unusual punishment. I support execution for murderers. But not life in prison. I'm not even sure why you would want to castrate a murderer. A parent's job is a guardian. You don't own your child. You can't sell him into a life of servitude. Castrating innocent children is appalling. The only case for Eugenics, are very flawed logic. It isn't just evil, it is also ineffective at its stated goal. But very effective way to destroy people for petty reasons.
