Seratonin, Vitamin D, and early brain development
J-William replied to Indefiance's topic in Peaceful Parenting
It wouldn't surprise me if sitting kids indoors all day harms their development. -
I don't know anything about guns, but under duress at 30ft I assume you might get 3-4 out of twenty? If we assume the cops don't practice very often they might have a starting accuracy of 3-4 out of twenty.

Does feminism/media EVER tell girls to be HONEST?
J-William replied to AccuTron's topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
About the only people I know of concerned with honesty integrity and virtue are Christians... And they are fairly bad at it. All I've seen from feminists is scoffing at those squares that believe in honesty or virtue. Intellectual discourse at it's finest really -
Cool, are you just reading things posted to her website? Does she have anything written in German that you could translate?

Likewise. I don't think people who love liberty know how to identify their enemies. They certainly don't have enough visceral hate for their enemies. They want to see the good in people and get all namby pamby and say "oh this socialist isn't bad, he's against the war on drugs" or something like that. I hate the movement to enslave humanity under any guise. When I was in college there was a student group called "students for social justice" their leader was the first person I ever met who openly called himself a communist... I ran as far from them as possible, but the campus objectivist group was full of objectivist types who didn't oppose the Iraq war. In the end I took some therapy and podcasts

How can you smear one group (Communists) by comparing them with a group that's not as bad (Nazis)? Someone can claim to be a marxist in polite company and most people won't say anything, but someone claiminng to be a Nazi... If only people treated communists as the scum that they are then the world would be a better place. As I recall Ayn Rand mentioned "social justice" in her writing, saying that if it had anything to with justice you could just say the word itself. I think it's high time we know our enemies. No one should make any mistake about who these social justicee warriors are and what they represent.

I've lost about 30 lbs over the last three months without any special exercise regimen. It was relatively easy. I think all this exercise more and eat less stuff doesn't work out. If you're going to the effort of changing your diet most people won't have the willpower left over to also make it to the gym. Willpower is a limited resource, if you force yourself to workout after spending all day avoiding tempting food you'll likely give in to late night ice cream bingeing. Not to mention that building and repairing muscle requires consumption of more nutrients which is the opposite of losing fat.

I want to see spontaneous regrowth of an amputated body part. That'll be much better evidence for divine intervention than uncle Bobs' syphillis getting better with some prayer (and visits to the doctor).

Any recommendation on hosting for a small website? I'm thinking about trying to set up something to sell or give away some software I've been making. I just want something cheap and easy.

Hey, the school I'm working at is looking for teachers. Heard about that guy from South Africa getting out and figured I might find someone else looking for a big change. most everything about the school is pretty good. The pay is good, the hours are nice, the working environment is good. The people are also pretty good. If you're interested feel free to ask any questions and you can pm me contact information if you want to get in touch with the school.

Is not forgiving bad for our health?
J-William replied to TheUKLibertarian's topic in Self Knowledge
Forgiveness is saying that everything is ok between you and another person and you feel like inviting them to dinner would make for a safe and enjoyable evening. Do people forgive their rapists and invite them over for family dinner? You will eventually stop thinking about the rapist every day, but you should never invite the rapist to dinner or ignore that anxious feeling you get when someone reminds you of the rapist. Same applies to harmful people of any kind. You don't invite them to dinner because you want to clearly see the warning signs in others. -
protectionism for infant industries?
J-William replied to cab21's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Seems fairly backward to me... A current example is the Chinese protectionism of domestic internet companies. The Chinese government uses the great firewall to block off potential threats to single party rule... It has also been argued that they use it to benefit domestic internet companies. To decide that protecting infant industries has been beneficial it should be enough if a Chinese internet company has been able to expand it's international competitiveness after the Chinese government blocked competitors. Merely being able to monopolize the domestic market is not enough to prove a good outcome. Google and it's various parts have been blocked for years. Baidu was the Chinese leader at the time and still is, to my knowledge it has not expanded appreciably outside china. Tudou was a leading YouTube competitor when YouTube was blocked, it has since lost market dominance... But it's successors have little overseas presence. Some of the domestic social networks had better features than Facebook or Twitter... I think I'm beginning to see a pattern here. Contrast that with Alibaba, a company who competes with eBay, Amazon and many others in online commerce and b2b. Alibabas competitors have never been blocked in china and yet Alibaba has become one of the most valuable and important companies on a global level. A single country can't "prove" the case, but I think it throws a lot of doubt on the idea. -
Is there a report on performance from what was hp and what was compaq? I think that a massive downturn in net earnings on double the sales is somewhat unsurprising given the PC sales climate of the time. With all the budget PC companies at the time... I remember getting a compaq computer for like $200. Regardless of that, doubling sales isn't valuable if you get less revenue :-)

Well GML (gamemaker language) is not c++, I was just throwing that out as a comparison because if you know c++ it's not hard to wrap your head around GML. I recommend you find tutorials on YouTube to walk through some very basic game making. Even if you're not going to program the game yourself it will help you get an idea of what's going on. In the end I don't think it matters which engine you choose, if you do it yourself choose an engine that is popular and you can find lotsa tutorials for. If you find a programmer then find someone you trust and can work with, then use whatever engine, framework or language they recommend using. There is no such thing as the best engine, just different engines with different trade offs. I guess the problem is that before you can really understand the trade offs you need to learn how to use one an that take months... But the good thing is that you can quickly learn another if your first choice doesn't work out.
-
I couldn't help you if you gave more details about your idea, but I'd be wary of attributing too much significance to your idea. Many people have "great ideas", it's only the ones that get made that count for anything. As for engines, unity seems to be a solid place to start, there are many YouTube tutorials available and lots of resources available in the store. One important thing to remember is that even if the engine you chose turns out to be wrong it is more important that you have something. If you start now with unity or whatever and spend six months or a year learning and working on the game you will have that much work and experience that you can transfer to the "perfect" engine. If you spend six months or a year waiting for the perfect engine you'll have nothing.

GameMaker Studio is an excellent 2D engine for PC. The PC version is free(mobile versions are paid) and they have an active community with many resources available for free or paid on their store. Many indie games have been made in Gamemaker. it's a solid high performance engine that supports windows and any other platform worth mentioning. It uses a ccustom Gamemaker language that is somewhat of a less complicated C++, As for those features you mention, it has the potential to support them. It has a physics engine, it supports networking... but the implementation of those features is up to your programmer. Just curious, who's making this game and what resources do you have? You're requirements seem oddly specific for the vagueness of your understanding of the process of making games... I'm just concerned because you could be taking a wrong turn into development hell before anything begins.. I have no doubt that there are unscrupulous people out there who will take advantage of your lack of knowledge and deliver you absolutely nothing or a half-working wreck of a game.
