Why is price of internet increasing?
J-William replied to DSEngere's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
This is the answer here! Why is it that most of San Francisco has one cable provider? It's the same reason they're driving out airbnb and the car sharing apps. Cuz the local government. They make regulations that favor big real estate owner, taxi companies and telecoms... And then pretend to be looking out for the poor and disadvantaged. -
Discussion agreement and honesty are your best friend. My daughter doesn't like saying goodbye to the TV when it's bath time. We will negotiate about how much longer she'll watch and then we go to the bath. Then she doesn't want to get out of the bath, so we'll talk about how long she wants to stay and set a timer (so we both remember). She is three now, we've been negotiating and reasoning since she could talk and she's gotten quite good at it. It's not fast and it's not super easy and convenient for me, but if I wanted that I can order a pizza, that's super easy and convenient , but the delivery guy won't be seeing me into my old age And as Stefan has mentioned, time spent negotiating now saves time spent fighting when they're teenagers.

Gender as Oppression?

Former "Miss World" advises. Nice.
J-William replied to PGP's topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
Delightful, and when the boyfriend gets a paternity test because he's suspicious of his untrustworthy girlfriend... That'll just make everything peaceful and stress free. Or maybe the kid will come out with red hair... Fucking everything with a pulse is a great way to have a wonderful life, pity this sort of "advice" is so common. It's mich tougher to say "stop sleeping around and fess up" SJWs will say you're slut-shaming and patriarchy and white privilege and maybe you're a nazi! -
Singapore has become spectacularly wealthy by some means, do you have knows what those means were? I'm not surprised that a small place with totalitarian rulers would have heavy regulation on taxis, media, drugs, or sale of gum... Those also happen to be the things about Singapore that I have heard of.

Great, nothing wrong with that! "Success is far more dependent on the mother's education level and family income, say the report’s researchers" I'm sure that children really care about how much school their mother had and how much they earned... Is this part saying that kids should spend time with both parents to turn out well? "Adolescents, spend with both parents during meals and other moments of family time, the more likely they will be as teenagers to stay focused and out of trouble. "

Do I owe you my services if you're drowning?
J-William replied to DCLugi's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Doctors don't owe anyone services, but if they're near someone who needs emergency help and they don't... Then they look like dicks. There's no obligation, but they might be ostracized and face financial ruin if word gets out that they passed a choking child and didn't help. People don't like cold heartless doctors. They can pass by someone with brain cancer that takes expensive and lengthy treatment, And not face social sanctions. Same thing with a farmer, if a man starves because the farmer won't give him an apple that looks bad. Hell, if we're taking it to an extreme. I can imagine that a farmer would be ostracized by his community if he help what he could in a time of drought and famine. -
If you asked my daughter then birthdays are awesome because you get to have cake, balloons and presents! For your average adult over the age of thirty cake isn't good because they want to watch their sugar intake, balloons are annoying and presents come when Apple releases the new iPhone... I'm being facetious, but what is a birthday about? When you were a kid it was about having fun and whatever meaning adults gave it. As an adult if you want your birthday to have meaning you can give it meaning or not.

Logic is a form of female oppression
J-William replied to fractional slacker's topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
Logic is a tool of the capitalists , scientists and inventors that happened to make modern society possible. What do you bet these people use Macs and own iPhones.... Won't they be disappointed that Apple owns Logic, and Apples tools of oppression also use quite a lot of logic, they also happen to have involved a lot of men in making them. Hopefully some day we can disregard all this patriarchal logic and get back to dying in squalor and filth. Don't worry Marxists, communists and purveyors of human pigsties don't need logic reason or evidence to put their wet sloppy boot on the neck of humanity. -

You make a good point. Most people aren't prepared for things that are likely such as job loss or illnesses. The Likelihood of some doomsday scenario is much less. If you're prepared for the apocalypse, but don't have money to pay bills for a few months if you lose your job... Well that's a problem.

It may be useful... According to the chart my SAT results and an IQ test I was given in 7th grade agree. According to that chart less than half a percent of the population has iq 140 or higher. Or another interesting way to look at IQ... About 2-4 million people in the world have IQ 150 or above. Or 30 million 140 or above. About the population Of Malaysia

Sounds good to me, Kickstarter has shown that giving people a specific objective can be really helpful in seeing whether there is interest. The tough part is getting serious research proposals, or getting serious researchers to take research ideas and doing the leg work to figure out costs and such. So what things do we think need some research?

How do atheists explain this? (Genuine Question)
J-William replied to Justin K.'s topic in General Messages
You know how to tell when someone has a genuine question? they preface it by saying it's a "genuine question" Same thing goes for when someone says they're being honest with you :-D -
International Women's Day?
J-William replied to MysterionMuffles's topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
Yeah it's been a thing ever since the soviets decided it should be an official holiday. It existed as a socialist thing previous to the Russian revolution, but the soviets made it an official holiday and other communist governments followed suit. I first heard of it after moving to China, so was no surprise to me that it was a communist thing. -
The ethics of facilitating cheating
J-William replied to Paul Carassafro's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Why did this become about a woman? Seems odd, the OP was very careful about saying "he/she". You're trying to tell us that if a woman is unhappy then she just can't be blamed for cheating? That's the oldest excuse in the book. The marriage contract is about sex and children. It seems appropriate that you changed to talking about a woman, since in many societies it is ok for a successful man to cheat even if he has other kids, as long as he's providing well for his wife and kids. But it is seen as a problem if the woman has an affair and the husband is paying for kids that aren't his. That is generally what marriage is about. I don't have a contract with my friends because there's no sex or children involved. -
So it's obvious that the prison system in the US is awful and counter productive, but I found this article putting forward a case that prison for women is uniquely awful because of "hatred for women". https://firstlook.org/theintercept/2015/02/20/ny-illegally-shackling-pregnant-incarcerated-women/ "But the fact that many prison officials maintain the idea that it is okay to shackle pregnant women, speaks to a broader hatred and lack of compassion for women generally." I don't see any compassion for men, rape is seen as an added bonus punishment for men. At least there are laws attempting to make life easier for pregnant women in prison. I see only compassion for those poor benighted women who shouldn't be in jail anyway, and no compassion for men. If you want to argue that women prisons are bad because men hate women and don't jump to their defense, then just show me one woman who would rather have the conditions in a men's prison. And the massive numbers of nonviolent female offenders locked up for years.

Right on! I think that's exactly the spirit in which Stef is always talking about donating. If you don't mind maybe you could tell more about your project? Maybe some folks around here might be interested in participating

I've taken a position that doesn't take much research. I don't know that there is man made global warming and I don't know what could be done about it. I do know that governments cannot solve the problems with guns and violence. There is evidence of global warming, there is evidence of man made warming... That evidence may add up to all this climate change stuff being a real phenomenon. I don't know. But there is no science in the conclusion "therefore government violence is the solution". Even if governments weren't the biggest polluters it would make no sense. Anyone who says that it is scientifically proven that global warming is a problem that can only be solved by the guns of government is an idiot making noises out of their mouth hole.

Pope says it's OK to spank kids, if their dignity is kept
J-William replied to Alan C.'s topic in Peaceful Parenting
Well sexual abuse is ok as long as their dignity is kept...Also, beating your wife is fine as long as her dignity is kept. -
I think a fully automated restaraunt in the fashion that it could replace a human staffed one is probably still in the multimillion dollar range. I don't know anything specific about that business, but if it were in the tens of thousands then places with very high labor costs would have already converted. I mean, a fast food restaurant somewhere with $15 an hour labor costs is going to cost at least half a million every year in labor, so you could amortize costs very quickly. We will see this happen as costs come down and labor regulations don't keep up.
