It's a ridiculous claim, especially when Obama runs the justice department and could direct them to prosecute under relevant statutes, or he could refer it to international courts, and being the president I suspect he could carry a lot of weight... But that won't ever happen, so maybe in a world where that ain't gonna happen this is the best alternative... But I don't think it's the job of the head of the ACLU to advocate for pragmatic solutions.

25 Invisible Benefits of Gaming While Male
J-William replied to shirgall's topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
I don't know, I like playing as the princess because she can float really far... When I play as a male it's just not as fun of a game... So I'm hoping this is a hot tip video that will illuminate some of the invisible benefits of playing as Mario or Luigi, otherwise I'll stick with princess, thank you very much! -
I can't see it because china.... I enjoy a good magic trick :-( But, after learning how a few magic tricks are done I have decided to stop learning how they're done, because it makes the tricks super boring. So much of magic is in the presentation. Magicians are (mostly) ethical con-men. They don't tell you the rules, but let you assume the rules they are using and they feel free to "lie". speaking philosophically, I think it's a good thing to be familiar with so you're not so easily taken in by con-men.

Since this thread is somehow still going, have another comic!

A child breaks a glass and cries
J-William replied to Daniel Unplugged's topic in Peaceful Parenting
Yep... my daughter breaks things and says "oops sorry about that" and goes to try and clean it up... but then I don't recall the last time that happened since we converted to mostly plastic dishes... -
in 2014 it's ridiculous that there is any overhead. publish that shit to wordpress.com (or any of a million places) they'll host it for free!

They're scientologists or at least in the scientology orbit so... well they're probably more rational than your average Christian. Also, I'd guess they have had private tutors and such because they're living the showbiz lifestyle and don't really have time for school.

How I became a statist
J-William replied to JeanPaul's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
That's odd, the heading for this post promises that there will be a description of how this guy became a statist.... and I'm not seeing the how, I am most disappointed I give it a 1/10 maybe the writer can sell his experience to salon.com and make some quick cash. -
Perhaps it's not just childhood victimization that makes for a radical feminist. Just take a look at this Lena Dunham character, she's telling everyone that she molested her sister and also men are evil exploiters of women. That's someone who actually victimized a little girl and telling people that all men victimize women... that sounds like projection. When a man says we need to wipe out huge swaths of humanity we call him an evil Nazi, when a woman does it she has mental problems... I bet you didn't even know you were being a white knight ;-)

I think it's plain that 14 years is ridiculous, and obviously only happened because they pointed it at some cops. If you want to punish someone a very short time in prison is a pretty awful punishment (try staying cooped up in a room for days on end guarded by assholes with guns who hate you... it gets old very quick) If they had caused the helicopter to crash then it would be a different story entirely. potential harm and actual harm are very different.

Obama Versus Reality - Parenting Edition
J-William replied to Magnus's topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
Yay for Obama... continuing the democrat program of destroying the family. big daddy government is gonna take care of everybody. -
I think that's your only choice, especially when smuggling (aka feeding people) is punished with 14 years in jail... I feel for these people, they are in an awful situation and only a few have the resources to get out like your friend. (Also curious why Honduras is so messed up that they have a higher murder rate)

What would a thought experiment in free will look like? Imagine a guy making a decision... Imagine my argument changing your mind... Woah!

How should I have protected my invention?
J-William replied to JeanPaul's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
hahaha You call him mean... What about all those poor Tesla engineers who had their patents opened up to the public, how will they put dinner on the table? I hear Tesla is going bankrupt cuz they can't sell any cars because detroit is making so many awesome electric cars and undercutting their prices by using their own technology... What's that you say? Tesla is kicking ass and innovating more than all their competitors. The only things really standing in their way are governments trying to protect entrenched interests... funny enough patents also protect entrenched interests. -
You know how I know his music is lousy? He's not out making money off it, but telling people on the internet that he should be paid for breathing.

How should I have protected my invention?

I don't know, sell tires that people voluntarily want to buy... Why is that not an option for you? -

Why are you entitled to monopoly rents on an improved tire formulation? -

Oh good, well that settles it then. He got a call on the god phone and now we know the facts... -
The way I understand the argument is they must be punished for being "bad" or they must be lectured by teachers that know what's best for them. That's a remarkably paternalistic way to talk about a group of people.

The Atheist Experience respond to anarchist.
J-William replied to ProfessionalTeabagger's topic in Atheism and Religion
I used to listen back before 2006 or so (gee that was long ago...) and I'd always cringe when the topic of economics or government came up. As an objectivist/libertarian and atheist there wasn't much available in podcasts before FDR. So I took what I could get. It got real boring the hundredth time I heard a caller telling them they can't prove a negative. I'm really surprised Dillahunty is still going, before him the host apparently changed every few years. As for philosophical rigor, they don't have it and never have. You should hear them talk about Ayn Rand, it's just sneering and insinuation that Rand is popular with teenagers as far as the eye can see. -
gee gosh golly, I guess he wasn't banned, he just disappeared for a while and pretended to be banned.....

Maher vs Affleck on politically correct Islam
J-William replied to Triumph's topic in Current Events
I haven't seen the debate, but I've seen some twitter discussion around the show and it seems to me that Affleck made good points. He pointed out that western nations have killed more Muslims and invaded more Muslim countries and so it is a ridiculous claim that "they" are the barbarians. What is it about the video that leads you to say he's a Hollywood liberal shouting down the opposition? (I'd watch the video, but YouTube doesn't work great in china)
