What drives you to live as an atheist?
DCLugi replied to WontStandForIt's topic in Atheism and Religion
You're in a tough spot my friend. I sometimes try to imagine how my mental structure would hold up if I was faced with the possibility that everything I held true wasn't. I like to think that I would accept the new evidence and move on but it wouldn't be easy. I've known great loss and in the aftermath I see life as opportunity. All the best to you. -
My heart goes out to you. I lost my wife of 18 years to Leukemia. It's a wound that never quite heals.

What's Worse, Sports Fanatics or Political Fanatics?
DCLugi replied to ClearConscience's topic in General Messages
You have to be pretty empty to fill up with 30k of celebrity illusion. When I was 16 I was a die hard Bruce Lee fan so I'm familiar with the need to attach to something believed to be bigger than myself. The irony is that Lee's message was don't give yourself away. Lesson learned:) -

Sorry about the nun joke. Two dolphins walk into a jar of peanut butter... -
Disturbing. Sounds like the Stanley Milgram experiments.

Two ancappers are in a jail-cell...
DCLugi replied to Donnadogsoth's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
A line of nuns are waiting to get into heaven. Sister Karen steps forward and St. Peter asks, "Have you anything to confess?" She says, "Yes, I thought about a penis." St. Peter puts holy water on her head and lets her in. Sister July steps forward and St. Peter asks, "Have you anything to confess?" She says, "Yes, I touched a penis." St Peter washes her hands in the holy water and lets her in. Suddenly Sister Debbie comes running to the front of the line. St Peter says, "What is the meaning of this, my child?" She responds, "I have to gargle in the holy water before sister Mary sits in it." -

Fascinating species this bipedal, carbon based creature. I wonder what this group was initially told. "Would you like to participate in a survey?" "Can I ask you some questions?" "Do you like angel butter?" They said that 2 dozen finalists were invited back. I think the context of what they walked into might in some way dictate their compliancy.

Perhaps in general but do you not think that there are cases of liberal minds being changed with new information? Wasn't Stef a socialist?
-
Curious indeed. Do you know the background of this event? What was the original topic for the group to meet?

Almost as effective as this -
If I say that 3+5 = 8 is a correct statement then anyone who says otherwise is incorrect to me.

Our disagreement is in whether accepting a moral claim requires one to agree to the behavior of said claim. If I say that hugging is moral then anyone who resists the hug is immoral to me.

I'm following up on a previous thread so it might be out of context. It was argued that rape can be moral because it doesn't require the one being raped to consent. I'm seeing if kissing has the same result. If I say that rape or kissing is moral then It should be applicable to all people at all times meaning both parties.

Kissing people requires 2 parties. If both parties are to act morally then they have to agree to the act of kissing.

Let's say that we agree that kissing people at least once a day is moral. In this claim we acknowledge that it must apply to everyone. If you try to kiss someone and they reject your claim and run away are they acting immorally in this scenario?

What is the mainstream in this forum?
DCLugi replied to Thomasio's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Act voluntarily. Reject the initiation of force. Let the chips fall. -
There are different degrees of dangerous. The one running at you with a meat cleaver. The one who supports the use of force against you. The one who scares children into conclusions without investigation. I've known religious people who don't pose a direct threat but our relationship can never be deep as there's always a short circuit in the connection.
