Is it ok if your partner is attracted to another person?
Alan C. replied to jester7707's topic in Self Knowledge
If I were affectionately involved with a woman, I wouldn't joke around with other guys about other women being hot, or remarking about their features, or browsing through photos of women online. I'd consider it disrespectful, inconsiderate, and a betrayal of her trust and confidence. I'd want her to have peace-of-mind knowing that she never has to worry. I'd feel pretty bad if she didn't extend the same courtesy to me. -
Doylestown Twp. couple turned in by son for marijuana sentenced How heroic. I wonder if the cops patted him on the head and gave him a cookie.

We get £17,680 a year in benefits, buy 40 cigs a day, have a laptop and a home with 47-inch TV.. why work? The welfare state cultivates an entitlement mentality and climate of dependency.

Monopoly isn't a problem so long as there are no barriers to entry into the market. A 'market monopoly' may refer to a situation in which economies of scale provide a cost advantage to a firm only because it was first to arrive on the scene, but that isn't a type of monopoly that should concern anybody. See my previous post on "natural monopoly." It's largely a bogus concept, but you have to ask people what they mean by it.

There Will Be No Economic Recovery/End of America - Critique
Alan C. replied to temporaryaccount's topic in General Feedback
I haven't read through the entire thread on the other site, but a couple of things grabbed my attention after a quick glance. "Everything" isn't going to collapse. The U.S. won't turn into Mad Max. The Soviet Union was in a depression for 70+ years, Japan has been in recession for 20, the U.S. was in a depression for a decade and a half and has been slowly stagnating for the past 40 years. The U.S. will likely be in recession for many years to come. Things are spiraling out of control as a result of monetary debasement, regulatory impediments to growth, malinvestment, and a massive parasite class (about half of all Americans receive government benefits and about 20% of Americans work for the State). I might read through the thread in more detail. -

Narcissist's Psychological Defense Mechanisms [Sam Vaknin]
Alan C. replied to Alan C.'s topic in Self Knowledge
While each of us possesses narcissistic traits to some degree, the fact that you're able to recognize them in yourself, and express displeasure, suggests that you do not have NPD. People with NPD lack self-awareness (because they're completely enveloped by the narcissistic personality) and will vociferously deny that there is anything wrong with them. -
Any career in engineering is going to involve heavy math. I worked, for a time, in the IT dept. of a company which designs and manufactures computer components. Because I went everywhere in the company, I became friendly with the guys in the test labs. Their job was to test parts in various environments (eg. heat, cold, moisture, vibration, static discharge, g-forces). They had binders filled with graphs and spreadsheets. All they did all day was deal with physics and math.

Will America Descend into a Civil War?
Alan C. replied to Stefan Molyneux's topic in New Freedomain Content and Updates
There won't be a civil war between statists and non-statists. If there is a civil war, it'll be between groups of statists fighting over control of the State. I know this because they've already been fighting over control of the State through the electoral process. Once that option become unviable, they may resort to other options. -
Paul Krugman - Why is he wrong?
Alan C. replied to Avarice567's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Like AnarcoB said, this is a sizable topic to cover. It would be difficult to encapsulate Krugman's fallacies into a few soundbites. One of my favorite blogs is William Anderson's Krugman-in-Wonderland. Not only do I enjoy Anderson's analysis, but I also enjoy the comments. One of the things I find most amusing is that Krugman seems to be oblivious to the concepts of opportunity cost and economic calculation. He repeatedly commits the broken window fallacy in his columns. You can also find a handful of videos on YouTube of Peter Schiff addressing Krugmans fallacious reasoning. I've also posted some of the incredibly inane things that he has said in this thread. One of the errors which Krugman routinely commits, and is probably best known for, is the idea that spending drives economic growth. In other words, creating additional currency units to permit people to consume more grows the economy. This might seem intuitive to a child because a child's mind hasn't yet developed the ability to fully conceptualize beyond what is immediately visible (because of a lack of life experience, not because the child is stupid). An increase in spending doesn't produce additional wealth. Another common error is his claim that there is little to no inflation. Austrian economists define inflation as an increase in the money supply. Mainstream economists define inflation as an increase in prices. People such as Krugman simply look at numbers on a spreadsheet and draw conclusions from that (eg. GDP goes up and that's good). Their analyses usually lack context and are completely devoid of anything meaningful. It's possible for GDP to go up while people become poorer. It's also possible for uneployment to increase while the aggregate standard of living increases. It isn't possible to assess the relative "health" of the economy simply by looking at numbers on a spreadsheet. -
Free markets lead into feudalism?
Alan C. replied to Avarice567's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
If that's true, is it bad? How does one "create" a market and how does a market divide people? I seem to recall you insinuating that people should not be free to associate with whom they wish. -
Is FDR really about philosophy and it's discussion?

Lashing out is the result of enduring years of condemnation from various people (eg. parents, peers, authority figures, etc.). Stef's Facebook post was interpreted by many people as contemptuous. Of course, this doesn't justify the deluge of vitriol. Stef's popularity has attracted a contingent of detractors who look for any opportunity to pounce on lapses or blunders in order to make a spectacle. I don't find this to be productive at all and it would be best to move on and not spend any more time on it.

I didn't find any humor in it, but I can understand that somebody else might because it is shocking. I've encountered a few people who exhibited similar behavior; just not to that degree. It's all coping/defense mechanisms for having been abused and/or neglected.

When gold goes to $3,500 what does ...
Alan C. replied to endurox50's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
People often call the Peter Schiff show to ask his opinion on why the price of gold and silver haven't risen rapidly. Some have speculated that there is manipulation going on (especially the trading of paper metals). While that is probably true, prices are still subject to supply and demand, and demand will decrease as the economy stagnates. Also, people have been hawking their precious metals (eg. jewelry, silverware, etc.) to pay their bills. There are 'cash for gold' shops everywhere around here. -
Muscle mass will keep your metabolism up and help prevent too much fat from accumulating. It's good for your heart, blood pressure, and general well-being. Regular weight training will help mitigate problems later in life. None of this means that you need to bulk up. If you don't particularly enjoy lifting weights then lower the intensity and amount of lifting per session. Good nutrition is important whether or not you lift weights.
