UN’s $5.7B anti-poverty agency doesn’t do much to reduce poverty, according to its own assessment The purpose of anti-poverty programs is to finance the salaries of the people who work in the anti-poverty agencies. The free-market is the best and most effective anti-poverty program.

The Rules of Capitalism
Alan C. replied to brainburn's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
I don't understand the connection between capitalism and more work. The comforts and leisure that we enjoy are unprecedented in history. One of my grandmothers grew up on a farm in rural Oklahoma. They didn't have electricity, running water, natural gas, central heat/air, or indoor plumbing. They had to butcher livestock and grow crops to feed themselves. They had to chop wood to burn to warm their home. Their work days were long and grueling. It was necessary to send hand-written letters through the mail in order to commicate with people over long distances. Information was stored on paper in filing cabinets. Today, I spend maybe an hour or two each week procuring food for myself which I can store in a refrigerator. I work in an environmentally-controlled office to which I commute in a car. All of my communications are instantaneous. I use a computer to store information which I can access within a few seconds. -

Have you factored in the cost of supporting the State into your analysis? I could easily maintain my current standard of living by working 25% less than I currently do, if not for the added costs imposed by the State. -

Do you have a refrigerator? Do you have a mobile phone? Do you have a computer? Do you use email? Do you have central air and heat in your home? Do you own a car? Do you buy your food in a grocery store? Have you ever shopped in a department store? -

Austrian economics defines inflation as an increase in the money supply. Inflation causes a decrease in purchasing power, which can result in increased in prices. It is possible for a currency to lose purchasing power even as prices decline. In such a situation, the full benefits of improved production are not redounding to consumers who are being deprived of an increase in their standard of living.

USA takes the lead in killings of children The statistic that 14% of men in prison experienced childhood abuse doesn't sound right. I wonder if that was a typo. Also see this thread on child abuse.

Stef, you should feature this on your channel for a time to get the view count up. Another problem with the situation in the U.S. is the dislocation caused by State interventionism which forces capital and labor to be funnelled into unsustainable industries (eg. finance). When the dollar collapses, millions more people will lose their jobs. These are not "real" jobs, even though they are counted as "employed" in official statistics. I say that they aren't real because they're not market driven.

Why Paul Krugman should be President Obama's pick for US treasury secretary Haha, I hope Peter Schiff talks about this on his radio show. Krugman is to economics what wizardry is to science. Krugman repeatedly commits the broken window fallacy and has no clue about economic calculation as documented by William Anderson.

How college students think they are more special than EVER: Study reveals rocketing sense of entitlement on U.S. campuses Since narcissistic personalities develop as a coping mechanism, an increase in the number of people with a sense of entitlement, and other narcissistic traits, suggests an increase with problems in the families over the same period.

Most of the problems in that list are the result of State intervention into the market. He is conflating capitalism with rent-seeking. While it's true that some capitalists are rent-seekers, it's not always the case. Many capitalists became wealthy because they satisfied the demands of the market. There is no evidence for this claim. Even if it was true, it doesn't matter. This doesn't sound right. Did you mean to write that most people stay poor because they don't do those things? -
Yes, you have. However, I wanted to point out that the only ethical argument in your list is: "Intellectual property is not libertarian." The other arguments are appeals to pragmatism. That's not to say that they don't carry weight; they do. My personal preference is to focus on ethics because it forces your antagonist into a position in which he has to defend aggression. One of the big mistakes that libertarians make (especially on YouTube) is to focus on things such as statistics or a contest of ideas (eg. flat tax vs. fair tax). Not only is that futile, but it diverts attention away from the only thing that ultimately matters. Don't allow yourself to be roped into a debate over whose statistics are more accurate or whose ideas sound more practical.
