Succinctly put, socialism fails because of the economic calculation problem. Without signaling from market prices (arrived at through exchange), coordination of production and division of labor breaks down. Free markets don't fail or produce less freedom over time. Ignorant, superstitous, envious, self-indugent, hedonistic, narcissistic, mentally-unbalanced people do. Free markets impose onerous costs on irrationality, imprudence, short-sightedness, recklessness, and irresponsibility.

We haven't seen massive price inflation is for a couple of reasons. 1. It can take years for new money to bid up prices as it circulates. 2. Trillions of dollars are currently 'frozen' in bonds and cannot be used to bid up prices (like writing somebody a check and telling them not to cash it for years).

Social and economic ostracism doesn't involve force. It simply means dissociation.

People who ascribe to leftist worldviews (left-liberalism, progressivism, Marxism, socialism, communism) are as much of a threat to civilization as an asteroid impact or pandemic. If these people are not separated via social and economic ostracism, they will wreak economic devastation that will set back humanity by a century or more.

He might be defining 'capitalism' differently than you and I might define it. He might also be projecting as many free-market haters do.

How do you make a ham sandwich? Ask somebody on the street and they'll probably tell you that you need two slices of bread, a slice of ham, maybe a slice of cheese, and some mayo. The capitalistic order of production (aka the 'invisible hand') is far more complicated, but it brings all of the ingredients together, and makes them available on the grocery store shelves at a low price without central planners. Rothbard explains: Somebody did an experiment to see how much it would cost, and how much work it would entail, to make a sandwich from scratch. It takes $1500, 6 months, and a lot of farming to truly make a sandwich at home from scratch Of course, it actually takes far more work and expense, but you get the idea.

The Philosophy of Star Trek Economics
Alan C. replied to AncapFTW's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
Even in the fictional future with a seemingly super-abundance of just about everything, they still need engineers, doctors, and scientists. However, there is still an incentive problem. Why spend years studying and working instead of going on vacation? In the beginning of Star Trek 2, there is a guy sweeping the floor as Kirk and Spock walk by. -

Judge says Kleiner Perkins should get $276K from Ellen Pao
Alan C. replied to Alan C.'s topic in Current Events
Ellen Pao drops lawsuit against Kleiner Perkins, agrees to pay legal fees In a free society, the freedom to associate with whom one wishes doesn't end at the door of your home. Any business should be able to hire/fire anyone for any reason, and these discrimination lawsuits are nothing but legalized shakedowns. -
