Your reason for NOT having smart phone?
nathanm replied to fractional slacker's topic in Miscellaneous
I love computers but hate touchscreens. Things I have to click on=small The Cursor=smaller (good!) My Fingertip=HUGE (bad!) No tactile feedback (bad!) Smart phones and their plans are waaaay too expensive for my blood. I have a $20 Tracfone, I buy the minutes I need and then there's a service protection plan which costs me 6 bucks per month to keep it alive. Even this I am not crazy about, the idea of having a pile of unused minutes that I paid for but can't use because the "service" ran out. I don't get that, but whatever. Smart phone behavior in public is ubiquitous and slightly annoying so being contrarian in this regard fosters a small semblance of the definition of 'normal' I grew up with, i.e. people not face down in electronics 247. I was the last person I know to own a cell phone. I got one after my car threw a rod on the highway and I had to walk to a gas station to call my father to pick me up. It was then that I learned that pay phones no longer exist and I had a massive Rip Van Winkle moment. -

Probably. I know for myself there are a certain very specific group of public figures that were pushed into my peripheral vision at some point and I just blindly accepted their goodness. You didn't actually know jack squat about them, but you just had this generic feeling of goodness about them. Mandela, Mother Theresa, any Pope, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Dali Lama etc.. It wasn't a you-better-buy-into-this-kid-or-else kind of thing like Jesus, but it was just this set of political dolls they issued you that you had to play with at least once. They might as well be mythical figures, though. This video is only wince-worthy after having watched Stef's presentation on Mandela. Before that I would not have noticed. I guess it's an invitation to always be skeptical of anyone They've tried to sell you on. You never know when the Innocuous Smiling Foreign Man Who Does Good Things For His People has a wife who is down with necklacing. As a kid I could plead ignorance, but then when you dig up even a little dirt on these figures you find it's smelly enough to knock a buzzard off a shitwagon and it's like, 'why in the hell did any of the adults telling us this stuff back in the day not know this? Doesn't take much, any one of those things mentioned immediately knocks these people off the pedestal.

What I think about it can't really be expressed adequately in words (it would have to be performed), but Doh! was one I thought of. It goes along with the category of Sometimes It's Better To Not Know Much About the MusiciansCelebrities You Like.

Well, I just read her writing for free which might have something to do with the not-earning-money thing. And it could be summarized as "you damn kids get off my lawn!" which I'd pay even less to read. I am not exactly sure how to produce genuine, involuntarily-felt gratitude in people, but whatever she's doing is not it. I think it has to do with knowing both what it was like before and after the nice thing. If you always do X for your kids then that's normal, it's not special. Why would either person expect praise for doing what they've always done? It seems far easier to experience gratitude in strangersfriends than it is with internal family relationships. At work there's boatloads of gratitude all the time, but at home it's all about guilt and obligation and forced thanks kinda stuff. Hmmm.

My Brothers reaction to the bomb in the brain series
nathanm replied to Sinatra0124's topic in Self Knowledge
The definition of abuse in the mainstream is much more extreme. Spanking and yellingpsychological bullying etc. doesn't even count. Only the most monstrous abuse that makes the news is considered "child abuse". Is it possible that your brother is using this definition? What manner of abuse did you survive Sinatra0124, if you don't mind me asking?- 8 replies

Is the brand name "Freedomain Radio" causing problems?
nathanm replied to TruthBeTold's topic in General Feedback
Ummmm…is her quoting this supposed to make Stef look bad? In-context, out-of-context it doesn't matter, the statement makes sense. The problem is ASSHOLES, not the gender of the ASSHOLE. -
Book Recommendation: In Defense Of Women
nathanm posted a topic in Men's Issues, Feminism and Gender
I've been reading H.L. Mencken's "In Defense Of Women" recently. I would highly recommend picking it up http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1270 First of all, if you read any Mencken your brain is going to be stretched out big time. Partially because it's way before our time, but mostly because of the language. I have to look up at least one word he's using on nearly every other page. But he can also be bloody hilarious and scathing. Carlin, Hicks, Hitchens etc. they are all good in that regard, but nobody writes a sick burn like Mencken.- 1 reply

Some things are so stupid they don't even deserve a response. The internet gives everyone a public voice, but it doesn't mean we have to listen to every one that passes by. Ignore, block user etc. the tools are there.

Is it possible that the people commenting did not see the captions? Because then if you don't understand the language all you see is a cute girl with tears in her eyes and it's morally neutral. I've never seen a comment stream that was so utterly disconnected from the video itself. I've experienced the phenomenon of boobs turning off my brain, and likewise here a cute face has completely turned off the brains of 700+ people. Hmmm.

[YouTube] The Truth About Che Guevara
nathanm replied to Freedomain's topic in New Freedomain Content and Updates
Thanks for the trailer, Clay. That makes me rethink some of the movies I've liked in the past. Because this is generally the format of: here's a violent person, but they're a hero because they're fighting against an even worse enemy. Braveheart comes to mind. Movie is full of ghastly violence, but it still orients your sympathy to the main character. Now obviously there's many more years of history between William Wallace and Che, and I'm not even claiming that I thought William Wallace was awesome, but I just think it's a good reminder to be very careful about whom media creators want us to understand and admire. -
I scrolled through all the comments. These are the only Non-FDR replies I could find that actually commented on the content of the video: Not a very good result for 750 replies. Beautiful people have the option to not play into the social norms they criticize, but very few choose to do so. Beyonce can't change the genes which make her beautiful, but she has hundreds of other options to pursue IF being pretty is so painful. She could not wear makeup, not wear fashionable clothing, not make music videos, or make music videos with a bunch of ugly people who can dance. Pretty apparently doesn't hurt enough for her to change her behavior of being a sexy glamorous pop star.

[YouTube] The Truth About Che Guevara
nathanm replied to Freedomain's topic in New Freedomain Content and Updates
Yikes. Now I want to know what story Che fans are hearing, because I can't see how you could take any of these facts and spin this guy into being a super cool dude. -
Your comment wasn't exactly hard to find! You can spot those of the FDR persuasion a mile away. Everything else on there is mindless observation that the girl is cute; nevermind the bullying tactics of mom and the distress of the girl. Sometimes I wish I had children just so I could feel whatever frustration that parents allegedly feel that makes them look upon such a scene with sadistic glee that a child is broken and subservient. Because I have exactly zero sympathy or empathy with off-camera mom here. How much do children piss people off? I've been around kids and it seems like my line for being annoyed with kid's behavior is WAY father off than their parents' line. Oh but hey it's all fun and games because Asian parents are hard asses and drive their kids to excellence in math and piano playing. Yeah fuck all of that noise.
-
The off-camera parental comments are illogical because the girl is already in the middle of a given action when she is told not to do said action. If you've got your kid in rubber boots and walking down a crick, or on a beach then what sane person says 'don't get dirtydon't touch that'? And if you're building a model rocket why the hell would you think there's no tools involved? The message isn't the worst, but the premise is not believable.

In my opinion the baseline of (voluntarily listened to) music's effect on our mood, regardless of the emotion the music conveys, is always positive. No matter how sad a song might be I don't think it's possible for that song to actually make you feel worse. I think music only enhances our emotion in a good way. Even if it's an angry or hateful song I still think it's a net positive. If I just think about "When I Am Laid In Earth" or "Barbriallen" long enough I can make myself weep, but I still don't think that it's a truly negative emotion. I think music modifies our moods, but its power is limited. The only time music makes me angry is if it's forced on me, but that's not so much the music itself, it's the involuntary part. Yes I know, quasi-involuntary; I can quit my job. Yes, but…™ Sorry…

A disgusting video on Youtube titled "How to discipline our child"
nathanm replied to DanielR's topic in Peaceful Parenting
No, that comment was in reference to the other video in the thread which seems to have vacillated between public and private. There really and truly was a bible-thumping hippie in that one. -
I'd love to see a bathos-laden satire of this trailer wherein it starts off with all the scary tension about a day of anarchy and then when it comes the dance music kicks in and there's a montage of euphoria and productivity. Businessmen shaking hands, the capitol building overgrown with moss, rusted out tanks, a pile of dusty riot shields, batons and pepper spray in a junkyard, kids running lemonade stands, people buying raw milk, a kid carving a stick with a KNIFE during recess, a shot of a pay stub with no deductions, drug users getting therapy, a smoothly paved road, a modernized classroom with enthusiastic children…whatever else you can think of. A huge production of course, but it would rock.
