  1. Got any jokes that are so unfunny that they're funny? You know those corny jokes with a question as a set up and a silly answer as the punchline? What is the #1 trusted e-mail site for owls? HOOTmail.com! Yeah, lame, I know, and that's the point. Post your favourite lame and unfunny jokes XD
  2. This was one of my favourite songs a little over a decade ago. It's called Sic Transit Gloria by Brand New, and when I took the time to read the lyrics, it was actually my first experience of even conceiving the idea of women being capable of raping men. Keep the noise low. She doesn't wanna blow it. Shaking from head to toe while your left hand does "the show me around." Quickens your heartbeat. It beats me straight into the ground. You don't recover from a night like this. A victim still lying in bed, completely motionless. A hand moves in the dark to a zipper. Hear a boy bracing tight against sheets barely whisper, "This is so messed up." Upon arrival the guests had all stared. Dripping wet and clearly depressed, he'd headed straight for the stairs. No longer cool, but a boy in a stitch, unprepared for a life full of lies and failing relationships. (Up the stairs: the station where the act becomes the art of growing up.) He keeps his hands low. He doesn't wanna blow it. He's wet from head to toe and his eyes give her the up and the down. His stomach turns and he thinks of throwing up. But the body on the bed beckons forward and he starts growing up. The fever, the focus. The reasons that I had to believe you weren't too hard to sell. Die young and save yourself. The tickle, the taste of... It used to be the reason I breathed, but now it's choking me up. Die young and save yourself. She hits the lights. This doesn't seem quite fair. Despite everything he learned from his friends, he doesn't feel so prepared. She's breathing quiet and smooth. He's gasping for air. "This is the first and last time," he says. She fakes a smile and presses her hips into his. He keeps his hands pinned down at his sides. He's holding back from telling her exactly what it really feels like. He is the lamb, she is the slaughter. She's moving way too fast, and all he wanted was to hold her. Nothing that he tells her is really having an effect. He whispers that he loves her, but she's probably only looking for sss... (Up the stairs: the station where the act becomes the art of growing up.) So much more than he could ever give. A life free of lies and a meaningful relationship. He keeps his hands pinned down at his sides. He waits for it to end and for the aching in his guts to subside. The fever, the focus. The reasons that I had to believe you weren't too hard to sell. Die young and save yourself. The tickle, the taste of... It used to be the reason I breathed, but now it's choking me up. Die young and save yourself. Up the stairs: the station where the act becomes the art of growing up. The fever, the focus. The reasons that I had to believe you weren't too hard to sell. Die young and save yourself. The tickle, the taste of... It used to be the reason I breathed, but now it's choking me up. Die young and save yourself.
  3. Yeah they seem to resemble the new generation of the young and in love couple that stays devoted to each other, instead of constantly sleeping around only to get back to each other like in most media. I think they were the closest we ever got to a functional heterosexual relationship on TV that was based on trust, honesty, and compassion.
  4. Thanks for participating in satiating my curiosity on virtue, Drew
  5. From Wikipedia: To be virtuous is to hold steadfastly to positive principles that make people happy without manipulation, like lying to someone to make them happy. Virtuous actions would be rooted in principles of moral excellence. The first thing an action has to live up to is not violating UPB. The second thing an action needs to do to qualify is virtuous is mutual benefit between giver and receiver. I think a virtuous action should end in a win/win situation. Even if some honesty may be inconvenient at the moment, like telling someone they're ruining their life with drugs, it would make them happier in the long run if they honoured your empathy and compassion by cleaning themselves up, thus making better of themselves as well as keeping you happy by fulfilling a condition that is required to remain friends.
  6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMxetvCzTcQ Episode 2 is finally out tomorrow if you haven't played episode 1, binge the two of these in conjunction!
  7. Hmm are you sure it's criticism you receive, and not insults?
  8. Looks like the activity has died out on this thread, thank you for all your contributions. I think it's time that I take a read at this!
  9. That was a good and truthful approach. I would add "everybody dies, it's a part of life. Some people take longer than others, and life is short, which is why we need to make everyday count."

  11. Good point. I'll think about it and see if I can reason out why some of these traits are virtuous.
  12. We have quite the mirrored journey, Patrick...There was a short period of time in between Agnosticism and Atheism where I thought there was no point to anything and goodness was a vague thing to grasp. I connect with this comment. I'm better able to have philosophical discussions with my Christian friends than I can with people who have pursued alternate spirituality like the new age suff. And you're not alone in projecting anger towards dishonest parents onto religion. Religion is partly to blame for their ignorance, but if the Bible is a giant invitation to cherry pick from an abundance of values and non-values, so are my parents for choosing to believe in the inhibiting beliefs. In fact, I don't think they even cared for the values so much as the appearance of Christians who go to church every Sunday and that is enough to obsolve them of their sins. Religion, much like any belief system, becomes a problem when it isn't so much about practicing what you preach, but preaching the opposite of what you practice. You know, those kind of people who are more proud to belong to a certain belief system than they are to actually have any integrity? Like a friend I used to have who was egotistical about being enlightened instead of actually BEING enlightened. There were some beliefs from her new age spirituality that were actionable and beneficial because they were some that I carried on from my Agnostic days. However, her belief system wasn't for making herself a better person, it was for making herself APPEAR a better person than other people.
  13. It's less than an hour and a half, but so much happens within that time frame. Two estranged siblings and their neighbour find a building that transports them through parallel universes. Each universe has a different human history, levels of civilizations, and the only things that remain the same are the date, time, and the building, even in an apocolyptic alternate reality. I found this movie to be an enjoyable noodle scratcher as it piques your curiosity from start to finish. This is actually one of the first few plot based movies I've enjoyed, possibly because there's enough emotional depth amongst the characters and their minor, but sufficient backstories. Great dialogue, great mix between serious suspense and comedic relief, and overall one of the coolest concepts I've come across since In Your Eyes. I really hope this turns into a trilogy, there's just so much going for it. This was recently added to Netflix and I usually browse for 20 mins before I make up my mind, but this grabbed my attention immediately. Hope it does for you too!
  14. Totally moving call. My bestfriends in my physical proximity are both Catholic, while of course all my online FDR friends are Atheists. For the most part, the ones I talk to most are just as curious and compassionate as my Catholic friends. But there has been the discrepancy with some more FDR acquaintances who judge me and challenge me for having Catholic bestfriends like its a bad thing. They cut off the possibility of being friends with people of the same belief structures simply because it is rooted in superstition and religion. They make the argument that relationships are based in honesty and reality, and having irrational beliefs like religion stumps if not completely stifles their capacity to be true friends. Although it's a valid sounding argument, it hasn't been empirically proven in my experience. I could be wrong, but so far, I've been able to discuss my differences with my friends when it comes to their religious beliefs and my philosophical ones without it becoming a hostile debate. Instead, because I'm close with them, we're able to disagree peacefully and at the same time gain more insight about each other where we differ. This call reaffirms my belief that as long as you're a curious and compassionate person, no matter what your belief structure is, you're already a decent person, and much better than the rest of the populace. We have similar conclusions, but different methodologies. I think the tolerance taught in Christianity is probably what's left in me as I'm able to tolerate that my bestfriends believe in a sky ghost, but at least when it comes to real life execution of the virtues found in their religion, they are some of the kindest most consistent people I know in my life.
  15. Is this a new holiday? What do you guys think of it? It's the first I've heard of it.
  16. Right. I saw it as the mother initially being upset about it, but eventually opening up the fact that isn't a big deal to cow the let in, and that her daughter is very sweet with it. The mother did sound devoid of emotion, but she gained more joy as her daughter dodged the questioning and showed concern for the cow instead.
  17. In WWE, they refer to the wrestling ring as the squared circle because it's called a ring...but it's square!
  18. oh I thought it was gonna be a picture of this:
  19. https://board.freedomainradio.com/topic/43506-why-are-we-different-protective-factors-family-roles-and-the-guilty-conscience/ OMG I think some of the answers I've been looking for might be in this post. I think anyone who has a similar question as me as well as some things to say about the topic, I think we should move it all to Joel's thread.
  20. For those of us who have survived traumatic childhoods and environments, how do you think it is that we survived to maintain our curiosity and compassion? Was there any choice involved between replicating our environments and striving for something better in our lives? Did we require models for philosophical thinking or is it inherent in our personality despite our circumstances?
  21. not really, the space between Freedom Radio has a weird pause to it that Freedomain Radio doesn't have. I think because a word ending with M closes your mouth, and to transition to an R isn't as smooth as coming off an N where your mouth is open. BUT you do raise a good question why is it called Freedomain Radio, I'd like to know as well.
  22. Are you guys being sarcastic or am I missing something? The mother sounded loving and caring to me which might be why the daughter can give such love to the cow as well.
  23. Making the characters as consistent as possible with reality. It doesn't matter what your setting is, as long as the characters behave and react to situations realistically and embody virtues. For more on how to incoporate philosophy into fiction take a free gander at my blog http://www.yourwritetolive.com If philosophy means the pursuit of truth and moral excellence, you must, through your characters and stories, realistically depict situations that reflect on philosophical principles. For instance, if honesty is a philosophical virtue you'd like to touch on in a story, you can have a world that involves a lot of falsehood, and one character can be the honest one to undo illusions. You would show what would happen when illusions are undone as well as the long term benefits of what honesty entails.
  24. really catchy tune but very subtled propaganda. Quite the contradiction to be entertained by something that holds a destructive message. Like enjoying the movie Frozen despite of knowing of its hidden pussy power propaganda.
