For some reason all I keep thinking about is Inception and how each person had a totem, an object that was intimate to them, that they would test the weight and properties of in order to see if they were in reality or the dream world... I hope to contribute more to this thread but that's all that's running through my head for now.

Sharing Childhood Trauma Through Music
MysterionMuffles replied to MysterionMuffles's topic in General Messages
I think I'm starting to see what you mean, Matt. The opening line, he is excusing his mother who did not believe him about the molestation, and then he spends the rest of the song crying victim while also at the same time kind of "playing as" the molester in the verses in their POV. It's confusing without the explanation of exactly what the song is about, you could easily mistake it as he was actually raped by his parents, or that he has his own desire to molest children. Perhaps if there was an emphasis on how unforgivable and damaging it was for him and maybe stuck to his own POV for the lyrics, this could have been a more powerful song that brings attention to such a heinous act. While I empathize with his victimhood, now that I listen to it more deeply, especially with that opening acapella to contrast, he really does not have an objective view of what happened if he's the one asking for forgiveness. -
A couple weeks ago, a friend of mine and I were in the chat room talking about musicians writing lyrics that touch upon personal dysfunctions, particularly their childhood trauma. I shared this song by Korn called Daddy, and it's basically about how the lead singer Jonathan Davis was molested by a family member, and when he told his parents, they didn't believe him and thought he was joking. Take a listen at your own discretion, it is quite painful. The rest of the band didn't know what the song was about until he recorded the vocals in the studio and witnessed him breaking down crying and screaming, almost sounding like the child he was when the molestation occurred. They kept the track recording and the last few minutes of him wailing are heartbreaking. This song was so painful for him that for a long time he would refuse to play it live because he wouldn't want to break down during a gig. My friend's position was that it seems like an uncalled empathy dump for Jonathan Davis to unload all his pain onto potential listeners of this song and many other Korn songs containing expressions of lifelong struggles. My position was that I think these emotions need to be expressed for the catharsis of the artist, as well as inform people of the many dangers of life such AS child molesters and uncaring parents. On one hand, I can see how manipulative and traumatic it could be to share such a painful story in a song as intense as this, but on the other hand, I think listeners need to be aware of the artist's experiences so that they know such ills occur in the world, and that they can be better people to help prevent such ills. What are your thoughts?

I've stopped watching porn
MysterionMuffles replied to TheSchoolofAthens's topic in General Messages
Oh man I forgot I read your post last month, but I want to take the time to thank you for sharing your experience and elaborate explanation of how it affected your brain. I was consuming a lot of porn last month, almost every other night if not every night, but as the weeks went by, I reduced my consumption. I think I'm down to once a week, but I've been so busy working my jobby job, editing my book, and playing video games that I haven't even made the time to watch porn. And when I do, I just don't find it stimulating anymore. I'm at the point of low libido I think. I still think of sex compulsively, but I'm not getting aroused by the thought of it like I usually would. I was worried for a while that there might be something wrong with me, but revisitting this post has reminded me that this decline is a good thing. It does remind me of another time a few years ago where I gave up porn for a whole month. Even though I was doing healthier things like yoga and journal, I had one week of low energy, but after that, I started noticing the beauty in common everyday women, had more energy and yeah...I would just like to go back there, but this time commit to keeping my energy levels up this way. -

Movie Recommendation: "In Your Eyes"
MysterionMuffles replied to George Marklin's topic in General Messages
Yeah good point and they DID meet in the end. For all we know it can be a delusion the woman cooked up while having been in an asylum the entire time, but the point of fiction of course is to suspend belief and assume that these fantastical elements are real for the "reality" of the story it's told in. The empirical evidence would be that the woman could not possibly and completely forge an ideal man with his own life struggles in another city that she may have never been in. I forgot their names -_- I usually remember names from movies, don't know why it's not coming up right now lol. -
If you were born in the 80's like I was, you were probably granted the dangerous luxury of cable and all day long TV. I just want to know what everybody's experience has been when it has come to TV consumption. Personally for me...I learned about family values from TV more than my own actual family. As a kid, I glorified Full House for Danny Turner's peaceful parenting approach, but as I grew older became cynical about how unrealistic it was. Now that I'm even older than an angsty teen, I can look back at that show with a bittersweet feeling of damn...I hate that I didn't get that in my childhood, but at least I had SOME idea of an alternative home life. And since my family was very disengaging, hard to communicate openly with, I found comfort in the intimacy and honesty families had on TV shows. It was a replacement for what I didn't get. If I got it, I think I'd still like the same shows, but not have the desperate clinginess to them as I did wishing I could have what they have. I mean, I can watch inspiring movies about people achieving their goals and striving to be the best against all odds and I relate to it because I'm in the same boat...but man when it comes to seeing wholesome loving families, I can relate in the sense that I have an envy for it. What's your experience with TV and growing up? I feel like TV and video games raised me more than my own parents. I am the bastard child of Super Mario and Peggy Bundy.

How I Conceived the Idea For My Novel

This is an interesting article someone posted on Facebook about the pitfalls of declaring and inflicting the guilt of altruism on children. A MUST read! https://drhurd.com/56795-2/

Hey everybody, I would like to share with you an in-depth look as to how and why I've come to start writing a young adult novel in order to promote peaceful parenting. This particular post is about the actual process of looking at the world around me and remembering my own experiences of being a teenager, and how that all shaped my decision to focus on this demographic in order to spread the word! Not only is YA one of the most read genres right now, they are actually more read by adults than teenagers. I think the teenage years are a very important time in everybody's life where their identity is shaped drastically from their experiences and the massive growth they go through in the short amount of time, and that it would be wise to write a story about peacefully parenting them in order to prevent violent conflicts happening at school. http://yourwritetolive.com/2015/11/04/how-i-conceived-the-idea-of-it-starts-at-home/ And for any further backstory info, here's another article as to how Chuck Palahniuk was the one who got me into YA in the first place, even though he doesn't write in that demographic. http://yourwritetolive.com/2015/05/25/how-i-got-into-young-adult-novels-through-chuck-palahniuk/

http://www.liftbump.com/2015/10/89539-dad-shared-pic-of-daughter-in-jail-to-punish-her-now-he-wishes-he-never-had/?author=cs&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=owned&utm_campaign=parenting&utm_term=beingmommy So this is an article about how a father is lamenting that he posted pictures of punishing his daughter for "Acting out," and basically giving her a taste of the prison system. In the comments below, I am surprised, and intrigued by the parents who are actually against this public shaming and unjust treatment. Your thoughts?

Yep! Gotta provide value in order to earn value. You only get what you give, and if all you do is bitch and moan, you get shut DOWN!

Omg yessss, his emphasis on peaceful parenting and integrity in personal relationships has been awesome. Glad he tackled this issue as well. Thanks for the post!

http://www.theatlantic.com/sexes/archive/2013/06/why-do-so-many-father-daughter-movies-feisty-kid-bumbling-dad/276773/ I found this article kind of disappointing. Seems to be further perpetuating male stupidity and modern feminism. I have some thoughts beyond that, but I want to know what you all think first. Especially the final paragraph. That annoyed me so much.
