  5. "The non-aggression principle requires and understanding of the non-aggression principle, which is why someone with an IQ of 30 is not criminally responsible for aggressive actions and so you can't be bound by something you do not understand." This is a truly crap argument. All that follows from your reasoning is the conclusion that animals are not bound by the non-aggression principle. You continue: "Animals cannot understand philosophy... and therefore they are not covered by morality." What follows from your reasoning is that someone with an IQ of 30 is fair game to be kept in a small cage for his or her entire life, selectively bred, farmed, slaughtered and eaten.
  6. she has no credibility with her kids, and it's their fault, right?
  7. Hi I didn't read the thread because I'm in a rush but here is what I advised another forum member who said he found it useful (One of) "The best methods for increasing your human capital is working a job to learn new skills, and once you think you've learned all the new skills you can learn in that job start applying for other jobs that you will learn other skills on remember you are never going to get all that much cash working for someone else, but a new job always has something to teach you, so choose jobs based on what they can teach you - not the pay if you continue this method you will be able to explain on applications you have learned a very diverse skill set from all your experiences" www.coursera.org also offers a whole range of free courses you can do online a couple hours a week is all it takes and some are very good
  8. In a free society it would be up to your insurance company, your DRO, or some other body to ensure your safety, and they would have financial incentives which the police do not have, so they would maybe give you a pepper spray or whatever, or offer you a self defense class to reduce your premium, in addition to taking preventative measures socially such as encouraging peaceful parenting to their clients, or making agreements with other organisations that if their clients were violent to anyone that they would incur penalties that were agree upon contractually, which may include financial fines, exclusion from collectiv buying (no garbage collection for example), cutting off of electricity and/or water, incarceration, exclusion, sending to rehabilittion centre, etc. these are just examples of measures that could be taken, there would be lots of people coming up with solutions so it would optimise over time

  12. Hello I would like to speak to the first caller on how our economic system feeds into stress And the third caller on using the state to destroy the state
  13. Hey STer, do you not agree that in a free society where there was appropriate incentives for rehabilitating very violent people that optimised ways would come to the fore we know some things work for some people, like Gilligans programs, getting a masters degree in prison seems to halt recidivism but they cancelled this program because the politicians said people would deliberately go to jail to get a free degree, then teaching transindental or vipassana meditation works for others, teaching prisonsers NVC works for some people, then there are trauma release exercises and brain state technologies which can work with other people we have so many prisons and so many violent people - no end of people to try these things on - but there is no way of knowing who can and cannot be rehabilitated until we have some of these approaches rolled out on a massive scale and see what the results are on huge sample sets. In time we could have several approaches and assess people for which approaches the experts thought suited them best or some combination of many of them. At that point, where the people who could be rehabilitated were given the best chance available, we would be able to clearly see what people were exceedingly tough nuts to crack, or maybe just irreversibly nuts. What would you do with them? I'd give them an island if they weren't willing to earn their own way in prison because I don't think anyone should have pay to feed and support people who refuse to reciprocate in any way period, but we can give them the means to provide for themselves and they can take it or leave it.
  14. Hey Lauren, Welcome! Where you from? What you do?
  15. From all I can gather he is coming from the spiritual standpoint "the external world is just an outer reflection of our inner environments" thus, if you "want to change the world you have to stop looking out and start looking in" in my opinion this is exactly what stef has done before starting FDR, I essentially agree that the more self-knowledge you have the more effective you are at healing the world too because self knowledge gets you gifts, but I think this dude was sort of barking the wrong way - he didn't want to come out and say it was a spiritual belief because then he'd get instant skepticism so he tried to go in through the back door but quite poorly. At the end isn't caller just trying to say: "Admit that you're not just trying to do your personal best, but be the best philosopher out there period." I don't know why Stef found this suggestion so hard to understand, or why the caller couldn't put it that plainly.
  16. I can't walk to Barcelona for you but I can show you the map.
  17. I see a validity in the criticism of free markets for peak oil, isn't it basically saying we can enjoy the privelage of cheap prices now so our children will have to pay several times as much cash for the cheap things that we take for granted.
