Online bullying, and Monica Lewinsky
fractional slacker replied to utopian's topic in Current Events
I am sorry to hear your parents were shitty to you as a child. If they were abusive, you had every right to retaliate. They are responsible for your success, not the other way around. I hope you find a way to reconnect with yourself, and others. Would it be "cyber bullying" to point out this woman made her name performing voluntary sexual favors on a married man? Would it be "cyber bullying" to point out Ms. Lewinsky has parlayed that "mistake" into a career of spouting the virtues of victimhood? Would it be "cyber bullying" to point out her political parasite married boyfriend decided to lob a few cruise missiles at an aspirin factory to try and distract the press from this whole tawdry mess Ms. Lewinsky and Billy boy got themselves into? Would it be "cyber bullying" to criticize Ms. Lewinsky and her fellow SJW cohorts who prefer to cloak censorship by playing the victim card for consensual relations? -
It's the matrix of language, yes? Climate denier. Check your privilege. Anti racist. Where the accusation is as good as evidence. There is considerable backlash against Starbucks from the left on this issue which is rather telling. Because folks talking might threaten the whole racial tension industry. Hello MRM. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/on-leadership/wp/2015/03/19/why-starbucks-chief-howard-schultz-put-himself-at-the-center-of-americas-race-debate/?wprss=rss_business

Is Pollution Aggression?
fractional slacker replied to TheSchoolofAthens's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
This one hits home. I have a friend that attempts to claim driving a car is, while very minor in degree, a violation of the NAP against future generations. My friend is a "climate change" evangelist. It causes strife between us. Sorry, I haven't read the entire thread and someone may have already brought this up. I reject the poison pill of pollution invalidating the NAP. This argument is basically the secular version of original sin. If you consider life as optional, then yes you could argue pollution is aggression. If you are a misanthropic nihilist, arguing about the sin of pollution is your attempt to justify spreading misery. -
I know it's fashionable to bash the politically correct corporate green mermaid, but is that fair? They are at least attempting to discus something not trivial. They are inviting you to speak up.What do you guys think about engaging in a volatile topic with your local barista? http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/The-Bite/2015/0317/Why-your-Starbucks-barista-wants-to-talk-about-race-relations

How do atheists explain this? (Genuine Question)
fractional slacker replied to Justin K.'s topic in General Messages
If the OP had prefaced this question by noting this has nothing to do with philosophy, I dare say the responses would have been generous and less numerous. At least that is my $.02 cents. -
From the geniuses who brought us the "ban bossy" campaign we have another "moral" obligation decree. According for Sheryl Sandberg, men can improve their plight by supporting the women around them. “From stronger marriages and healthier, happier children to better outcomes at work, the benefits of men leaning in for equality are huge.” I know Stef has mentioned this before. Anyone have male/female stats for the following: workplace deaths, military deaths, suicide, alimony, prison inmates, college enrollment, forced medication of school children by gender? After all, if we can only save one woman/girl, it is worth it, yes? http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/03/sheryl-sandberg-nba

This quasi legalization is a bureaucrats dream and a consumer's nightmare as ETU hinted at in earlier post. It gives unproductive folk AKA govt. a reason to exist. Think of how many rules and brow beating we currently endure with "legal" alcohol. "Legal" weed means the political parasites have another excuse to micromanage every aspect of your life for "your protection." They will call it responsible use. The reality is you must bow to their every whim to enjoy your freedom privilege while paying them extortion money they will call taxes.

Anarcho-communists (holy shit...)
fractional slacker replied to DSEngere's topic in Libertarianism, Anarchism and Economics
My experience has been many lefty anarchists have little to no economic education. They believe Wall st. to be the pinnacle of capitalism. Those that are educated about economics tend to adopt the social justice warrior model to justify their various bigotries and contradictions. -
Justice Dept. releases study on Ferguson P.D.
fractional slacker replied to DCLugi's topic in Current Events
The mom (wife of Mr. "Burn this bitch down.") is now facing the POSSIBILITY of arrest. Her and her posse only beat, stomped, and robbed a woman. The prosecutor will consider charges. Affirmative justice 101. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/crime/prosecutors-consider-charges-against-brown-family-members-897543 -
Thoughts on Kokesh's Latest Speech
fractional slacker replied to Omegahero09's topic in Current Events
"Sounds like a preacher to me." agree "I'm not convinced about NVC myself, as it can lead to a kind of moral relativism imo." agree This video makes me uncomfortable as I perceive it on some level as endorsing parts of Buddhism and promoting a pollyanna stance. Neither one of those ideas are a threat to TPTB in my opinion. -
What does UPB say about statutory rape?
fractional slacker replied to BaylorPRSer's topic in Philosophy
As I understand it, UPB is applicable to beings that can comprehend and understand UPB. Exactly when and what age that happens is impossible to say. Since one cannot prove a fraudulent claim in regards to an older person having sex with a younger person, I don't think UPB would always condemn such a practice. There is not automatically a violation of UPB because of an age difference. Age disparity would fall under APB: aesthetically preferable behavior. -
Stephen Hawking tells Google ‘philosophy is dead’
fractional slacker replied to Ashton's topic in Philosophy
Hawking is such a smart guy yet he can't string 3 words together to save his life. It's called the non aggression principle. Stephen Hawking: Aggression could destroy us http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/stephen-hawking-aggression-could-destroy-us-10057658.html -
Golden Nugget Casino sues clients to get money back
fractional slacker replied to st434u's topic in Current Events
The one time the house doesn't have the edge and the "regulator" thugs come in and confiscate winnings. It's like middle school all over: heads I win, tails you lose. Those gamblers who were on to the mistake should have high tailed it out of there and had someone else cash in their chips. -
"The question is what does philosophy have to say in regards to waiting until after marriage to have sex?" I think discovering something true with that question could benefit from some philosophical arguments, but not as an abstract. Without circumstances and details, philosophy could not add much.

Guy pays taxes with 600 $1 bills complicately folded
fractional slacker replied to st434u's topic in Current Events
This is akin to slaves doing a work slow-down protest. It's passive aggressive and more likely to do harm than do good. This stunt may cause the violent gang to pass another law making it illegal to pay with 1 dollar bills which could end up harming someone who has good reason to pay their extortion fees with 1 dollar bills. -
Can someone make a rebuttal to this claim?
fractional slacker replied to PreDeadMan's topic in General Messages
That whole paragraph is argument by adjective and assertion, and which has already been pointed out: it's dozens of conclusions about dozens of subjects. There is no rational discourse going on. The first sentence starts with propaganda by using the adjective true to describe communism. Communism is an inconsistent and contradictory method for organization because it denies self ownership and property rights for everyone except the ruling class. -
(^ not sure what the previous vid has to do with Chomsky) Even if Chomsky had something brilliant to say, his style of communicating is a like running your fist over a cheese grater. BTW, I also found the late William Buckley to be similar. It's a shame in a sense as the guy is obviously very intelligent. But when you have a captive audience (college kids), your incentives to adapt to the market is removed. It's no wonder the guy hates capitalism.

The socialist dream crumbles in Venezuela
fractional slacker replied to Alan C.'s topic in Current Events
^^ Is Venezuela on the Verge of Collapse? Found that to be one of the best current articles on the continuing hostage situation going on in Venezuela. It's hard to imagine having money AND not being able to buy basic items such as cooking oil or diapers. The measures the govt. mafia keep putting in place to fix supply problem are not fooling anyone. Maybe we are just in the fish bowl, but I am still amazed you can't hardly find anyone on the street who knows anything about the crisis developing in this oil-rich country. SMH -
Moral?: Sneaking into a second movie with just one ticket?
fractional slacker replied to DenPratt's topic in Miscellaneous
Your friend is correct in asserting he is moral - from a utilitarian perspective. His viewing another movie produced the greatest good for his circumstances/situation. There is no way to prove him wrong. Like all utilitarians, your friend is a relativist. I believe that is where the two of you might have a disagreement.- 15 replies

Buddhist monk on TED talk: How to let altruism be your guide
fractional slacker replied to Lingum's topic in Current Events
Haven't watched the video. It seems to me altruism is a bi product of religion, and hence erroneous when used to separate truth from falsehood. Altruism as a moral theory is retarded, as Ayn Rand used to preach about. -
Was $175 US couple of hours ago (now $195). From what I have read the price is depressed from, well basically too many folks converting bitcoin to fiat. From what I understand, while transactions are increasing, merchants ain't holding. As soon as they get bitcoin, they convert it to fiat. Miners are also in a pickle as production costs are at or on verge of being higher than market price forcing them to sell coins ASAP.
